Fine Structure Splitting

Q1. The spin-orbit interaction in an atom is given by H  aL  S , where L and S denotes the
orbital and the spin angular momentum, respectively, of the electron. Find the splitting
between
(i) 2 F7 / 2 and 2 F5 / 2 (ii) 2 D5 / 2 and 2 D3/ 2 (iii) 2P3/ 2 and 2 P1/ 2

Q2. The spin-orbit interaction in sodium produces D1 and D2 lines with wavelength 5890 A

and 5896 A respectively. Calculate the internal magnetic field due to electron orbital
motion.
Q3. The fine structure doublet splitting of the first excited state 2P3/ 2  2P1/ 2 of the H - atom

is 4.53 105 eV . Calculate the corresponding separation for Li  in both eV as well as


in cm 1 .
Q4. If the doublet splitting of the first excited state, 2P3/ 2  2P1/ 2 of He  is 5.84 cm-1 ,

calculate the corresponding separation for H in cm -1 and eV .


Q5. A beam of He  enters a uniform magnetic field of flux density 1.2 T . Calculate the
energy difference between states whose spins are parallel and anti-parallel to the
magnetic field.
Q6. Draw the fine structure splitting of the H  line in the H - atom.

Q7. An electron in a particular state of the hydrogen atom has a magnetic potential energy of
about 10 23 J . Estimate the magnitude of the magnetic field acting on the spin magnetic
moment of the electron which is of the order of 1 Bohr magneton.
