Square Pile Foundation Design

The document outlines the design of a square pile foundation consisting of six piles, each with a square cross-section, to support a total service load of 3600 KN. It details the calculations for longitudinal and lateral reinforcement, specifying the required areas of steel, types of ties, and their arrangements. The design adheres to relevant codes and standards, ensuring structural integrity and safety.

Design of Square Pile

The foundation for a Structure comprising 6 Piles of Square Cross section have to su
and bear on hard rock. Design the reinforcement in the pile assuming the

Condition : Square Pile

Given Data UNIT

fck 20 N/mm2
fy 415 N/mm2
No. of Piles 6 Nos.
Assume Clear Cover (mm) 50 mm
Length of Pile , L= 6 m
Total Service Load from Column, 3600 KN
Service Load on each Pile P= 600 KN
Ultimate Load, Pu = 900 KN

Step-1 : Calculation of Longitudinal Reinforcement

Pu= [0.4 fck *Ag + (0.67 fy - 0.4 fck ) * Asc],
Assuming Size of Square Pile, D= 300 mm
Gross Cross Section Area , Ag= 90000 mm2
Hence, Area of Steel required , Asc = 667 mm2
Minimum percentage of Steel required 1.25 %
Minimum Area of Steel Required, Asc min = 1125 mm2
Total Area of Longitudinal steel required, Ast req = 1125 mm2
Assume dia of Longitudinal bar 20 mm
Area of one bar 314 mm2
Nos of bars Required 3.58 Nos.
Nos. of bars Provided 4 Nos.
Gross Area provided, Ag prov. 1256 mm2
Provide 4 Nos. # 20mm dia

Step 2 : Lateral Reinforcement

I. Central Portion of Pile
Vol Rein = 0.2 % of Vol of pile
Assuming diametre of of Tie d= 8 mm
Perimeter of Tie = 800 mm
Volume of One Tie = ∏ / 4 * dia 2 x Perimeter 40192 mm3

Volume of Pile per pitch length = D x D x p

Vol Rein = 0.2 % of Vol of pile
Pitch p = 223 mm

Maximum permissible pitch = D/2 as per IS Code ,

Hence pmax = 150 mm
Hence Pitch provided = Minimum of above two 150 mm
Providing 8 mm dia tie @ 150 mm c/c

II. Lateral Reinforcement near Pile End

Vol of tie = 0.6 % of Vol for a length of 3D
Assuming diametre of of Tie d= 8 mm
Perimeter of Tie = 800 mm
Volume of One Tie = ∏ / 4 * dia 2 x Perimeter 40192 mm3
Length 3D = 900 mm
Volume of Pile upto length 3D 81000000 mm3
Vol tie = 0.6 % of Vol for a length of 3D
Volume of Pile per pitch length = D x D x p
Pitch p = 74 mm
Maximum permissible pitch = D/2 as per IS Code ,
Hence pmax = 150 mm
Hence Pitch provided = Minimum of above two 70 mm
Providing 8 mm dia tie @ 70 mm at a distance of from
end of pile both top and bottom

Step 3 : Spiral Reinforcement near Pile Head

Note: To be provided inside the main
reinforcement for a length of 3D
Vol spiral = 0.6 % of Vol gross
Assuming diametre of helical Tie d= 8 mm
Volume of spiral per pitch length
= ∏ / 4 * dia 2 x 2 ∏ n R
No. of Coils per pitch length, n= 2 Nos.
Radius of helix = R = (D - 2 xCC)/2 100 mm
Volume of spiral per pitch length 63101.44 mm3
= ∏ / 4 * dia 2 x 2 ∏ n R
Volume of Pile per pitch length = D x D x p
Length 3D = 900 mm
Vol spiral = 0.6 % of Vol of pile per pitch length

Pitch p = 117 mm
Hence Pitch provided = 110 mm
Providing 8 mm dia spiral @ pitch of 110 mm for a
length of 900mm
ection have to support a service Load of 3600 KN. The piles are driven through a hard stratum
pile assuming the pile to be 6 m long and using M20 grade concrete & Fe 415 steel.
