This document summarizes a study on modeling and simulating the control process of a power plant superheater using MATLAB/Simulink. A superheater is a device that converts wet steam into dry steam at 538°C to increase the efficiency of the steam cycle. The authors develop simulation models of a superheater in Simulink to characterize its dynamic behavior. Mathematical models of superheaters are described by nonlinear partial differential equations. System identification tools are used to estimate the superheater model and design a steam temperature control system. Simulation results are compared to measured data. The goal is to control the superheater to provide dry steam at a high, stable temperature.

ABSTRACT
A super heater is a device that is used to convert wet, saturated steam into dry steam. Dry steam at 538oC contains more thermal energy. It increases the overall efficiency of the cycle. The Modelling of the Superheater is done to control the temperature. The paper deals with simulation of control of power plant Superheaters by means of Simulink. The simulation models are developed. These are applied to electrical power generating plants in order to characterize the essential dynamic behaviour of the boiler. The corresponding models are used for the power plant processes. Mathematical model of a superheater is described by sets of nonlinear partial differential equations. Estimation of the Superheater model is done by the System identification tool for design of a steam temperature control system. Data obtained by the measurement compared with simulation results.

1. INTRODUCTION
A super heater is a device found in steam boilers. It is used to convert wet, saturated steam into dry steam at a temperature of 538oC. Super heaters are a beneficial part of the steam cycle. This is because dry steam contains more thermal energy. It increases the overall efficiency of the cycle. Super heaters are widely used in steam generators and heat recovery steam generators. Their purpose is to raise steam temperature from saturation conditions to the desired final temperature of 538oC. When used in steam turbines, superheated steam decreases steam heat rate of the turbine. Thus it improves the efficiency of turbine. Thereby the overall plant power output and efficiency is increased. Steam conditions at the steam turbine exit will have little or no moisture. It depends on the pressure ratio. Moisture in the last few stages of a steam turbine can damage the turbine blades. Super heaters are heat exchangers. They transfer energy from flue gas to superheated steam. The steam boiler is made of an outer tank, inner tank and an electrical super heater. In the inner tank there are six electrodes to heat up the water. The outer tank gets water from a main tank. This water can be filled into the inner tank and back again. Since the water in the inner tank can go back into the outer tank, there has to be room for it else the boiler 96

will be overflowed. To make sure that the boiler wouldnt be overflowed there are two maximum levels. The more water in the inner tank will increase the quantity of generated steam. When steam is produced a pressure inside the boiler will be build. The higher the pressure, the higher will be the temperature of steam. The pressure in the boiler is higher than the pressure in the steam pipe that is connected to the boiler. A controllable valve makes sure that the pressure doesnt get too high or too low in the boiler and the steam pipe. When the pressure drops the temperature will drop. The amount of dew in the steam will increase. The steam needs to be dry so the steam pipes do not get clogged by scale. Super heater improves the economy in the following ways. The super heater increases the capacity of the plant. Eliminates corrosion of the steam turbine. Reduces steam consumption of the steam turbine.
