2y = 4.

Represent this situation geometrically.

41. 6. A motorboat whose speed is 18 km/hr in still water takes 1 hr more to go 24 km
upstream than to return downstream to the same spot. Find the speed of the stream.

solutions? 2x + 3y = 7 and (a – b)x + (a + b)y = 3a + b – 2.
43. 8. Five years hence, the age of Jacob will be three times that of his son. Five years ago,
Jacob’s age was seven times that of his son. What are their present ages?
44. 9. The ratio of incomes of two persons is 9:7 and the ratio of their expenditures is 4:3. If
each of them manages to save Rs. 2000 per month, find their monthly incomes.
45. 10. The students of a class are made to stand in rows. If 3 students are extra in a row,
there would be 1 row less. If 3 students are less in a row, there would be 2 rows more.
Find the number of students in the class.
46. 11. Sita Devi wants to make a rectangular pond on the roadside for the purpose of
providing drinking water for street animals. The area of the pond will be decreased by 3
square feet if its length is decreased by 2 ft and breadth is increased by 1 ft. Its area will
be increased by 4 square feet if the length is increased by 1 ft and breadth remains the
same. Find the dimensions of the pond.
47. 12. On reversing the digits of a two-digit number, the number obtained is 9 less than
three times the original number. If the difference of these two numbers is 45, find the
original number.
48. 13. The speed of a boat in still water is 15 km/h. It goes 30 km upstream and returns
back at the same point in 4 hours 30 minutes.
