ROLLER CHAIN

Problem 1.
A chain transmission must transmit 10 HP, at a speed of the driving wheel of
1000 rpm and 500 rpm in the driven. The center distance is 50 in. Design a transmission.
of suitable chain, for a medium shock service.

SOLUTION:

In principle, 25 and 50 tooth pinion wheels are chosen to obtain the proper ratio.
that there apparently are no space limitations.
Let's choose a triple string from number 50 (table 17-14).
The unit power of this chain (table 17-14). For 1000 r.p.m.

Corrections:

Teeth (25) (table 17-16) K1= 1.46

- Torones (3) (cut 17-17) K2= 2.5
- Service (medium impact) (table 17-11) Ks = 1,3

The total power that our chain can supply is:

10,7*1,46 * 2,5
HT= 30 HP Satisfactory

The length of the chain, considering that its pitch is 0.625 in, will be:

L 2 * C N1N

P P 2 C 0.625 2 50

P 0.625

The distance between centers should generally be between 30 and 50 without exceeding 80 steps. In our

so, as we can verify, we are =80at the limit. It would be advisable to go to a chain

from number 80 that has a diameter of 1 inch and a power of 22.9 HP. In this case, we would only use 1 strand.

Therefore, we adopt a chain of number 80 with only 1 strand.

Problem 2 (Semester 96/97)

A roller chain must transmit 90 HP from a pulley that rotates at a speed of
600 rpm, to another that must rotate at 300 rpm. The load characteristics are of strong shock.
with normal torque, and the lubrication will be through a bath.
The distance between centers should be approximately 60 centimeters.

A) Which chain will we use?

B) What length of string will we need?

SOLUTION.

teeth, to achieve good transmission without too much noise as there seems to be no limitation
of space.
Since the lubrication is through a bath, we take a chain of number 100 that gives 51.7 HP per strand, and
Since we need 90 HP, we take 2 cables.

The power that it can transmit is:

Hr = * Kr = 51.7 = 74HP is not valid
Ks 1.4

where K1(dientes = 20) = 1,18

K2(torones = 2) = 1.7
K(strong shock normal torsion) =1.4
We now take 3 nougats:

Hr = * Kr = 51.7 = 108.94HP is valid
Ks 1.4

where K2(torones = 3) = 2.5

Problem 3.
A 7.5 HP speed reducer, rotating at 300 RPM, has to operate a
conveyor at 200 r.p.m. The distance between centers should be approximately 71 cm. Select
an adequate transmission through chains.

SOLUTION

Initially, wheels with 20 and 30 teeth are chosen for speed ratios, and the minimum
of 20 for having a longer life than 16, 18 and there seems to be no space issues.
We initially choose chains of number 50 or 60 (table 15.13 17.14) that provide a power of 300.

Corrections:

- By number of teeth (20 teeth) (table 15.14, 17.10) K1= 1.18

For service (table 15.15)
24 hours (table 17.11) Ks = 1,4

Therefore, the power capabilities of these chains are:

1

1
number 60 6.20 * 1.014 * 1.18 5,300 CV

3,085
number 60 7.5
=1.42@2 K 2 =1.7 5.3*1.7=9.01CV
5.3
Number 50 is chosen because it would go at a lower speed requiring smaller wheels, and therefore,
it would have less noise and more life. Perhaps economically, number 60 would be more advisable.
The length of the string in steps will be:

L / p = 114 is taken, we return to this formula and obtain C * 70.5 cm.

The distance between centers should not exceed 80 steps. The correct range is between 30 and 50.

Since the total space is <35 cm, we estimate D<34 cm

Therefore, the step must be less than 19.77 mm.

The distance between centers must be between 30 and 50 steps.

As the diameter of the roller is 10.16 mm (table 17.13), the space

total occupied is: D = Dt + d = 273.11 + 10.16 = 283.27 mm = 28.33 cm < 35 cm

We chose a triple chain of number 50:

According to table 17.14, the unit power of this chain at 1000 rpm is 10.7 HP.
