Types of Diesel Engines

1. Two-Stroke Diesel Engines: Complete a power cycle in two strokes of the piston; often used in smaller

2. Four-Stroke Diesel Engines: Complete a power cycle in four strokes of the piston; most common type
used in vehicles and heavy machinery.

Working Principle of Diesel Engines

The operation of a diesel engine can be explained through the four-stroke cycle, which consists of the
following stages:

1. Intake Stroke

The intake valve opens, and the piston moves down the cylinder, drawing in air. The cylinder fills with
fresh air, preparing for compression.

2. Compression Stroke

The intake valve closes, and the piston moves back up the cylinder, compressing the air. The temperature
and pressure of the air increase significantly (up to 500-700°C and 14:1 to 25:1 compression ratio).

3. Power Stroke

Near the end of the compression stroke, fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber at high
pressure. The heat from the compressed air ignites the fuel. The rapid combustion produces high-pressure
gases that force the piston down, generating mechanical power.

4. Exhaust Stroke

After the power stroke, the exhaust valve opens, and the piston moves back up to expel burnt gases from
the cylinder. The cylinder is cleared of exhaust gases, ready for the next intake cycle.
Components of a Diesel Engine

1. Engine Block

The engine block is the core structure of the diesel engine, housing the cylinders where combustion takes
place. It supports various engine components and provides pathways for coolant and oil circulation. The
block also contains the crankshaft and camshaft.

2. Cylinders and Pistons

- Cylinders: Hollow chambers in which pistons move up and down.

- Pistons: Solid pieces that fit snugly within the cylinders, converting the force of combustion into linear
motion.

- Function: During the power stroke, the combustion gases push the piston down, which in turn rotates the
crankshaft.

3. Crankshaft

A long rod connected to the pistons that converts linear motion into rotational motion.

- Function: As the pistons move down during the power stroke, they turn the crankshaft, which ultimately
drives the vehicle's wheels or machinery.

4. Fuel System

- Components:

- Fuel Tank: Stores diesel fuel.

- Fuel Pump: Delivers fuel from the tank to the injectors.

- Fuel Injectors: Atomize and inject precise amounts of diesel fuel into the combustion chamber at high
pressure.

- Function: Ensures a steady supply of fuel for efficient combustion.

5. Air Intake System

- Components:

- Air Filter: Cleans incoming air.

- Intake Manifold: Distributes air evenly to each cylinder.

- Function: Provides clean, pressurized air necessary for combustion. Some systems may include a
turbocharger to enhance air intake.
6. Exhaust System

- Components:

- Exhaust Valves: Open to release burnt gases after combustion.

- Exhaust Manifold: Collects exhaust gases from multiple cylinders and directs them to the exhaust pipe.

- Catalytic Converter: Reduces harmful emissions before they exit into the atmosphere.

- Function: Expels combustion byproducts from the engine and reduces environmental impact.

7. Cooling System

- Components:

- Radiator: Dissipates heat from the coolant.

- Water Pump: Circulates coolant through the engine and radiator.

- Thermostat: Regulates coolant temperature.

- Function: Maintains optimal operating temperatures to prevent overheating and maintain engine
efficiency.

8. Lubrication System
