CHAPTER 1
Rationale
People nowadays are more into technology or what they call “techy” like
mobile phones, portable computers, consoles, and answering tools are
present in their everyday lives. There are a lot of artificial intelligence-
generated apps such as chat ChatGPT, Cici, Google, etc. Artificial Intelligence
is employed in many daily contexts, including employment and education.
Artificial Intelligence (AI), in its broadest sense, is intelligence exhibited by
machines, particularly computer systems, as opposed to the natural
intelligence of living beings. As for Artificial Intelligence apps such as
ChatGPT is an application chatbox that uses natural language processing to
create humanlike conversational dialogue.
Furthermore, according to Agkun & Greenhow (2022) in today’s
environment, artificial intelligence (AI) is used by numerous amount of
people, particularly students, and teachers. For instance, artificial
intelligence (AI) can assist students with their everyday task in the classroom
and act as a teacher substitute by providing answers to queries that humans
find difficult to understand. These applications of AI have shown promise to
support teachers and students in various ways: (a) by providing instruction in
mixed-ability classrooms, (b) by providing students with detailed and timely
feedback on their writing products, © freeing teachers from the burden of
possessing all knowledge and giving them more room to support their
students while. They are observing, discussing, and gathering information in
their collaborative knowledge-building processes.
Yet according to Cotton et al. (2023), the way in which people apply this
type of intelligence will determine the outcomes, it can be or harmless. In
addition to this, Plata ey al.(2923) stated that, universities are increasingly
concerned with the impact of Generative AI, such as Chat GPT, on
cheating and other violations of student’s academic integrity in the
Philippines. In this instance, students make regular use of it by using it to
complete homework assignments and other tasks, which has also raised
concerns regarding academic dishonesty and plagiarism. Because artificial
intelligence applications are user-friendly and convenient, especially for
those who can afford to buy things like laptops and cellphones—this is the
doorway through which students most frequently abuse its power. Many
become dependent on it and stop doing their work because it expedites
the process.
In the contemporary landscape, a significant number of individuals are
employing artificial intelligence, commonly referred to as AI. This technology
has various adverse implications for users, particularly students. A
considerable portion of students to rely it to fulfill their academic tasks, a
practice that proves detrimental as it cultivates dependency and impedes
their understanding of the educational material intended by their instructors.
In addition, these also include to the issue, job displacement due to
automation, perpetuation of biases, privacy concerns, vulnerability to
cyber attacks, and potential malicious use. These negative effects need to be
carefully managed to ensure AI benefits society.
Research of Related Literature
Multiple Intelligences Theory suggests that learners have different
cognitive strengths and learning preferences across various domains of
intelligence. AI is transforming research and education with its ability to
efficiently search, analyze, and summarize vast amounts of information. AI
tool can help identify relevant studies, extract key findings, and synthesize
results. In education, AI-powered systems can tailor learning experiences to
individual needs, abilities, and learning style. This can lead to improved
learning outcomes, increased efficiency, and enhanced student engagement.
For example, AI-based recommender systems can suggest learning resources
and activities that align with the learner’s interests and cognitive strengths,
promoting engagement and effective learning (Gardner,2006).
Zone of Proximal Development refers to the difference between what
learners can achieve independently and what they can ach6with support
from a more knowledgeable other. Al can be used to provide personalized
scaffolding and support tailored to the learner’s ZPD, enhancing learning
outcomes and promoting skill development. AI can help identify a learner’s
ZPD by analyzing their performance and progress through learning tasks .
Adaptive learning systems can then tailor instruction and support to the
learner’s needs, dynamically adjusting the level of challenge and support to
optimize learning gains (Koedinger et al., 2013).
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
This section deals with the overall strategy in the research conducted. This includes
the Research design, research respondents, research locale, research instrument,
and the references
Research Design
The research design that is used in this study is correlational. Correlational research
design is one kind of non-experimental manuscript editing research technique for
analyzing the connection between one or more variables. This research design is
helpful to identify how artificial intelligence affects learners academic performance.
Research Participants
The participants of this study are the Grade Xl learners in Guinacot National High
School. Despite the enormous student population, the researchers focus on grade 11
learners. The following requirements are use in selecting the participants: 1. Possess
gadget such as a cell phone and internet access; 3. They must employ any form of Al
application. The researchers have standards to guarantee the reliability of the data
used in this investigation. The researchers will use pseudonyms to protect participant
privacy and to maintain their anonymity.
Research Environment
The location of this study is Guinacot National High School. Guinacot National High
School is located at Mangga, Guinacot, Guindulman, Bohol. The school is regarded as
one of the largest schools in the entire municipality. The school offers Junior High
School and Senior High School that has 55 teaching personnels, manage and
supervised by one school principal.
Research Instrument
The research instrument in this study is survey. According to Cresswell (2011) ,a
questionnaire is a research instrument used in survey designs where participants are
presented with a series of statements and potential responses, often in the form of a
scale. Participants select the response that best reflects their beliefs, opinions, or
attitudes, enabling researchers to collect quantifiable data and gain insights into
participant’s perspectives.
