Ethos In The Color Purple
The Color Purple is an honest emotional story about love, trust, respect, separation, friendships, and the
bond between sisters. It was published back in 1982 by Alice Walker. Walker is a huge activist, and even
participated in the 1960 s Civil Rights Movements in Mississippi. Throughout her novel she uses excellent
rhetoricto convey her strong emotions. The Color Purpleuses ethos to show you how horrible abuse is,
logos to help give the characters confidence, and pathos to convey the pain.
Throughout the Color Purple Walker uses ethos to show the harshness of abuse, both mentally and
physically. Especially, Shug s relationships with just about everyone. Mr. ___ says it best on page 287:
All I ever wanted in life was Shug Avery, he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, on page 210 when Celie is fighting with Mr. ___: I m pore, I m black, I may be ugly and
can t cook, a voice say to everything listening. But I m here. Logically Celie doesn t have much going
for her, but she completely acknowledges that. By doing so she gives herself the confidence to change
her fate. Nothing worse could happen to her then what already has. Also, there s logos when Nettie is
talking to the Olinka mothers: Why, she said the mother of his children. But I am not the mother of
anybody s children, I said, and I am something. This is extremely logical, and a great comeback,
because Nettie is something. She might just be a black missionary, but she is something. Therefore, it
isn t fair to limit the poor girls of their education just so they can be a full time wife. In addition, this
statement gives Nettie lots of confidence that she can succeed as a women, missionary, black, and in a
completely different country. By recognizing the logical realness of their lives the characters were able to
build up their confidence to persevere.
Throughout the Color Purple Walker uses pathos to convey the pain that the characters feel. For instance,
on pages 287 288 when Mr. ____ makes a speech about asking himself questions after Shug left him: I
start to wonder why us need love. Why us suffer. Why us black......The more I wonder, he say, the morel
love. During the speech there s even repetition when he begins each sentence with why us. By dragging
Healthy Eating In America
car, making it easier for on the go. Eating healthy and preparing your own meals takes time and energy,
something that the average American can t afford to lose. The convenience and low price of fast food
makes it more accessible than healthy food to the average busy American.
While eating healthier may be more expensive and time consuming than eating fast food, there are ways
to make the transition to a healthy lifestyle easier. Meal prepping for the week is a good option for
people that have limited free time during the week. Setting aside an hour to take care of your health by
preparing meals the day before you start a busy week schedule makes it easier to stay on track with
healthy eating. Also, planning for long car rides and packing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It also gives examples of schools that have switched to healthier food options without losing money
(Weber). Shopping for produce at local farmer s markets instead of at the grocery store can help cut down
on the cost of buying healthy foods. In addition, buying food locally will also help communities thrive and
allow small farms to continue to stay in business. Nutrition can be confusing but finding a diet that
works for your body is important to having a healthy lifestyle. Considering everybody s body and health
differ from one another, finding what diet works best will take time to figure out, but it will ultimately
prevent unnecessary diseases. Preparing meals at home and finding favorite recipes can be a rewarding
learning experience that parents can share with their children. Outside of having a personal healthy
lifestyle, voting and speaking to representatives in government about evaluating food regulations is
important in making a positive change for future generations. One big step would be making the daily
sugar intake percentage present on food labels, a standard
Women s Roles In The Ramayana
The Ramayana is an Ancient Indian epic poem that follows the story of a young prince named Rama who
is a mortal incarnation of the Hindu god Vishnu. The plot follows a narrative that starts from his first time
outside the royal palace, through his banishment from the kingdom and his quest to save his beloved wife
Sita from Ravana, the evil King of Lanka, all the way to his coronation as King of Ayodhya, the kingdom
from which he was originally banished. Throughout the whole narrative, there is one factor that remains
constant, the role of women in the culture. The acceptance, or rejection of these cultural values by the
women directly corresponds with how their character is perceived by the reader and how their role
directly influences the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The First two main female characters I am going to talk about are Kausalya, the mother of Rama, and
Kaikeyi, Rama s Step mother. I will compare these two characters due to the fact that they are both
married to Rama s Father, King Dasaratha, and because they could not be more different from one
another. Kaikeyi is a deviant female character. When Rama is chosen by his father to be his successor,
rather that her own son Bharata, she comes up with a plan to have Rama removed and Bharata
coroneted instead. It is important to note that the Laws of Manu clearly states that Though destitute of
virtue, or seeking pleasure (elsewhere), or devoid of good qualities, (yet) a husband must be
constantly worshipped as a god by a faithful wife. and A faithful wife, who desires to dwell (after
death) with her husband, must never do anything that might displease him who took her hand, whether
he be alive or dead. She complies with none if these things. On the day of Rama s supposed coronation,
the king seeks out Kaikeyi for her company. However, when he finds her she is laying on the ground
and in a very sour mood. She berates the king for his preference of Rama and how she would rather be
dead than subordinate to his other wives, particularly Kausalya. She refuses his insistence to calm down
and sit with him on the couch and demands that he respect two
Steroids In Professional Sports
The rush to Adrenaline: Steroids in professional sports
Infertility, tendon rupture, increased blood pressure, heart attack, tumors, cancer, aggression, and
severe acne; these are just some of the side effects of using anabolic steroids ( Anabolic steroid abuse ).
Why would an athlete risk all of these serious side effects just to hit a baseball a little farther or to gain
muscle mass to be superior against their opponents in football? Most people know who big name
athletes like Jose Canseco, Sammy Sosa, Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire, and Lance Armstrong are; and
admire them. Barry Bonds hit 73 home runs in just one season. Lance Armstrong won seven Tour de
France titles in his career; both being doped up on steroids while doing so. Could they ... Show more

This lead to an investigation that ended up with positive TGH urine tests from four athletes competing
at the U.S National Championship. European 100m champion, Dwain Chambers, tested positive for
TGH. Victor Conte, the head of BALCO was sentenced to four months in prison and then house arrest
in 2005 for illegally providing athletes with an undetectable steroid. In 2007, Marion Jones, who won
three gold medals and two bronze medals at the Sydney Olympics in 2000, admitted to THG use. In a
short few months, Jones was sentenced to six months in prison after originally lying about her steroid
use in court. Jones was immediately stripped of all five medals by the International Olympic Committee
(Baker). Famous Boxer, Sugar Shane Mosely, used THG in 2003; Mosely claimed that he thought they
were legal vitamin supplements. An athlete is liable for the violations of taking steroids regardless of
whether the athlete intentionally, unintentionally, or negligently took the prohibited substance
(Gillespie); which happened to MLB superstar Barry Bonds whom tested positive for THG, and later
claimed that his trainer gave the THG pills to him and he had no knowledge of the pills being steroids (
Barry Bonds steroid abuse ). 14 time all star, Bonds, holds various MLB records that
Streetcar Named Desire Meaning
There is a meaning behind everything in life and in the play A Streetcar Named Desire there was a
significance to the name given to the play and a relation to Blanche s life. The Literal meaning of the
title is that there is a street car that is actually named desire that she takes to go visit the Kowalskis.
The car named desire is mentioned twice in the story, in the first scene and also later on in the play
when Blanche tells Stella that she came her in the car named desire in response to Stella asking Haven t
you ever ridden on that street car? . Metaphorically speaking the title has a lot more significance.
Blanche is at the Kowalski place because desire literally brought her there; referring to the street car. She
is also there
The Quiet American Movie Vs Book
Philip Noyce s version of Graham Greene s novel The Quiet American to film was a large success. It
stayed pretty close to the book, and kept the personalities of the character s the same. What I respected
about the movie was that the director chose to film in actual Vietnamese locations and without
compromise, boldly sticking to the novel by not letting the Americans come out of the story too kindly.
It was filmed greatly and he captured so many details of Vietnam. Brenden Fraiser and Michael Caine
did an amazing job portraying their characters. The first difference that you can see is that the book was
in first person and the movie was in third. This being said, there were scenes added into the movie that
was not in the book. I wasn t disappointed... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He has negative outlook on what seems like everything. I personally had a hard time reading the book
because of the negativity from Fowler. Pyle in the book was the opposite. I was more interested in
Pyle because of his softer nature. What I like about Pyle is how he would stick up and defend Phuong
when Fowler made rude comments. Fowler said that Phuong was merely a beautiful tool for his sexual
pleasures. Pyle responded That s a dirty crack. I won t have her insulted. You have no right... (TQA,
Graham Greene, 1955, pg 78) This shows Pyle s passion and soft nature. Michael Caine is excellent as
Fowler in the movie. He plays an aging unmotivated but skilled reporter very good. On the other hand
Fowler in the film is a lot more vulnerable, especially as the film goes on, and his weaknesses begins to
show. The movie never shows Fowler telling Pyle how he feels about Phuong. He says that he is
detached but then becomes very involved in what is going on around him. With that action I feel it
shows that he does care about Phuong but doesn t know how to handle it. Thomas Fowler is a
complex character, and it is hard to compare him to his character in the book. The movie doesn t show
his personality and depth of character as the book does. The movie portrays him more likeable with
more dignity and less bitter. Fowler s character does still give us that deep sense of how the political he
is. Although I was disappointed because I feel they took a huge part of the book and tossed it out by

Illegal Drug Use And Prostitution
Money is often thought of as the root of all evil because it has been proven time and time again that
some people will do anything to get as much as possible. Some of the most profitable organized crimes
are so successful they are international but often rely on harming others to get ahead. Illegal druguse,
human trafficking and prostitutionare three of most lucrative crimes today generating billions of dollars
a year. The money is obtained illegally so the need for money laundering is essential. Several factors
go into each of these issues and some of these issues can easily be tied to one another. Greed, survival,
addiction and emotional needs are just a few factors that drive the businesses of organized crime. As
with any business, money is the fuel that keeps it going. In many cases illegal drug use, prostitution and
money laundering are found to be linked. An example would be a person turning to prostitution in order
to provide the funds necessary to get the drugs that they needed. Money laundering can also include other
sources such as illegally acquired funds through financial transactions (Adler, Mueller, Laufer, 2013).
Issues of illegal drug use, prostitution, and money laundering will always be a struggling issue in the
world of crime.
Americans have had a complicated history with drugs, illegal or otherwise. Up until the early 20th
Century, many substances we now condemn as illegal were, not only legal, but widely used in products
sold to households across
Surrealism Of The Temptation Of Saint Anthony Essay
During the period between World War I and World War II, many people decided that rationale had
created the destruction left behind from the war and that it was time to rely on the subconscious as a
way to analyze the world. These people became known as Surrealists. One of the most famous surrealist
artists was Salvador Dalí. Dalí s piece The Temptation of SaintAnthonyis a prime example of Surrealism.
Surrealist paintings are described as dreamlike and fantastical. Much of Dalí s paintings were images he
had dreamed up. He said that he would paint what almost seem like photographs from his dreams. Dalí
took Sigmund Freud s idea that dreams are symbolic. Objects can symbolize something as well as take on
a pun on the word. Much of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The last elephant carries another tower that symbolizes a phallic figure. It is said that the long legs of horse
and elephants symbolize levitation and nearness to heaven. However, the thinness of the legs could also
symbolize weak legs holding up the elephants and horse, weakly holding up the resistance to temptation.
The woman on the Cup of Desire and inside the temple are said to be reincarnated devils.
Dalí s surrealist The Temptation of Saint Anthony combines ideas and images that are not possible in the
physical world. Looking at the painting, the objects would make no sense. However, if interpreted like
people often interpret dreams, The Temptation of Saint Anthony shows the story of the devil luring Saint
Anthony. Because these images are only possible in the subconscious, they are considered surrealist.
