PRE-TESTING NO.

1. A ship displaces 10 000 tonnes has KM 9 m, KG 7.25 m. A 100 tonnes heavy lift is to be
loaded by ship's jumbo derrick whose head is 24 m above the keel.
Find:
a) What is the angle list as soon as the derrick is picking up the weight from the
wharf on the starboard side with an outreach of 18 m.
b) The list when the weight is placed on the upper deck Kg 12 m and 5 m to
starboard of the ship’s centreline.

2. A vessel displacing 7000 tonnes in salt water has a double bottom (DB) tank 20
metres long and 16 metres wide, partly full of sea water. If the ship’s KM is 7 metres
and the KG is 6 metres, calculate the effective GM if:-
a) The DB tank is undivided.
b) The DB tank is equally subdivided by fitting of one longitudinal watertight
bulkhead.
c) The DB tank is equally subdivided by fitting of three longitudinal watertight
bulkhead.
d) Based on the above effective GM values obtained, state which value is not
acceptable and why?

3. A ship of 5 000 tonnes displacement has drafts Forward 7metres Aft 8 metres.
MCTC is 100 t-m; TPC 20 tonnes; LCF is amidships.
500 tonnes of cargo is discharged from each of the following four holds:
No.1 hold …..C.O.G 40 metres forward of amidships.
No.2 hold …..C.O.G 25 metres forward of amidships.
No.3 hold …..C.O.G 20 metres aft of amidships.
No.4 hold …..C.O.G 50 metres aft of amidships.
The following bunkers are also loaded:
150 tonnes at 12 metres forward of amidships
50 tonnes at 15 metres aft of amidships
Calculate the new drafts forward and aft?

4. A vessel of 4500 tonnes displacement; TPC 12 tonnes, KM 4.2 metres (considered
fixed), KGf 3.2 metres; is on an even keel. She enters dry-dock and is set down on to
the blocks. Calculate using both MM1 and GG1 method to prove the following:-
a) Vessel’s effective GM when the dock gate is closed and water in the dock is
pumped out and the water level drops a further 0.45 metres?
b) Calculate the vessel’s final righting moment when the ship is heeled to a small
angle of 5 degrees?
c) Explain why using the MM1 and GG1 methods to determine effective GM are
both correct?
(20 marks)
5. A ship is divided up into a number of water planes, spaced 0.6 metres apart and
having the following areas:-
Flat Keel 120m2
WPA A 1092m2
B 1242m2
C 1355m2
D 1439m2
E 1499m2
F 1548m2
G 1593m2
D is the light water plane and G the load water plane. Find:-
a) The ship’s light displacement
b) The loaded displacement
c) Block coefficient of fineness of displacement (Cb) assuming length and breadth
of ship on waterline G are 130 m and 17 m respectively.
d) Ship’s TPC at loaded draft.
