4. The numerator of a fraction is 4 less than the denominator. If 1 is added to both its numerator and

denominator, it becomes 2 . Find the fraction.
5. The denominator of a rational number is greater than its numerator by 3. If 3 is subtracted from

the numerator and 2 is added to its denominator, the new number becomes 5 . Find the original
number.
6. Saurabh has Rs 34 in fifty paise and twenty-five paise coins. If the number of twenty-five paise
coins be twice the number of fifty paise coins, how many coins of each kind does he have?
7. The length of a rectangle exceeds its breadth by 9 cm. If the length and breadth are each increased
by 3 cm, the area of the new rectangle will be 84 cm2 more than that of the given rectangle. Find
the length and breadth of the given rectangle. Check your solution.
8. A steamer goes downstream and covers the distance between two ports in 4 hours while it covers
the same distance upstream in 5 hours. If the speed of the stream is 2 km/hr. Find the speed of
the steamer in still water. Check your solution.
9. The distance between two stations is 425 km. Two trains start simultaneously from these stations
on parallel tracks to cross each other. The speed of one of them is greater than that of the other
by 5 km/hr. If the distance between the two trains after 3 hours of their start is 20 km, find the
speed of each train. Check your solution.
10. Two years ago, Dilip was three times as old as his son and two years hence, twice his age will be
equal to five times that of his son. Find their present ages.
11. Kanwar is three years older than Anima. Six years ago, Kanwar’s age was four times Anima’s age.
Find the ages of Kanwar and Anima.
12. Two angles of a triangle are in the ratio 4:5. If the sum of these angles is equal to the third angle.
Find the angles of the triangle.
13. The width of a rectangle is two-thirds its length. If the perimeter is 180m. Find the dimensions of
the rectangle.
14. An altitude of a triangle is five-thirds the length of its corresponding base. If the altitude be
increased by 4 cm and the base decreased by 2 cm, the area of the triangle remains the same.
Find the base and the altitude of the triangle.
15. Divide 4500 into two parts such that 5% of the first part is equal to 10% of the second part.
16. A steamer goes downstream from one port to another in 9 hours. It covers the same distance
upstream in 10 hours. If the speed of the stream be 1 km/hr, find the speed of the steamer in still
water and the distance between the ports.

21. 50 kg of an alloy of lead and tin contains 60% lead. How much lead must be melted into it to make

22. Two numbers are such that the ratio between them is 3:5. If each is increased by 10, the ratio
between the new numbers so formed is 5:7. Find the original numbers.
23. Divide Rs 1380 among Ahmed, John and Babita so that the amount Ahmed receives is 5 times as
much as Babita’s share and is 3 times as much a John’s share.
24. A labourer is engaged for 20 days on the condition that he will receive Rs 60 for each day he
works and he will be fined Rs 5 for each day he is absent. If he receives Rs 745 in all, for many

25. At a party, colas, squash and juice were offered to guests. A fourth of the guests drank colas, a
third drank squash, two-fifths drank fruit juice and just three did not drink anything. How many

27. The sum of the ages of Anup and his father is 100. When Anup will be as old as his father’s present
age, he will be five times as old as his son Anuj is now. Anuj will be eight years older than Anup
is now, wen Anup is as old as his father. What are their ages now?
28. A lady went shopping and spent half of what she had on buying hankies and gave a rupee to a
begger waiting outside the shop. She spent half of what was left on a lunch and followed that up
with a two-rupee tip. She spent half of the remaining amount on a book and three rupees on bus
fare. When she reached home, she found that she had exactly one rupee left. How much money
did she start with?
29. Three prizes are to be distributed in a quiz contest. The value of the second prize is five-sixths
the value of first prize and the value of third price is four fifths that of the second prize. If the total
value of three prizes is Rs 150, find the value of each prize.
30. Half of a herd of deer are grazing in the field and three-fourths of the remaining are playing
nearby. The rest 9 are drinking water from the pond. Find the number of deer in the herd.
