1. INTRODUCTION TO MICROSTIM GENIUS

MICROSTIM GENIUS is advanced microcontroller based Electro-

therapy equipment.

A LCD panel and a soft touch membrane keyboard enable the physician to
set the parameters easily.

The attractive compact case makes it ideal for hospital, clinic home,
office and travel.

MAIN FEATURES:

• MICROSTIM GENIUS is a user-friendly unit featuring HELP facility and

therefore simple and easy to operate.

• Liquid crystal display with yellowish Backlight, displays the parameter

chosen, Program No, the treatment time, and the current in the output.

• Compact and lightweight makes the unit, PORTABLE. Particularly

designed to be accommodated in a BREIF CASE.

• Automatic Intensity control makes very safe operating environment.

• MICROSTIM GENIUS is up gradable.

3. APPLICATIONS

General Application of Muscle stimulator:

In general LOW FRQUENCY therapy is useful in stimulating the nerves.

Bioelectric current flows in our heart, brain, nerves, and other tissues, controls a
variety of functions of the body and maintains the vital activities.

If this bioelectric current does not flow smoothly, a balance is lost and the
symptoms such as stiff shoulder and neuralgia may appear. When a low
frequency electric current of the same quality as the electric current which flows
in the human body is given into body by a low-frequency medical device, the
nerves are stimulated, the muscular movements are arisen, the blood flow is
promoted and the symptoms such as stiffness, pain, paralysis and fatigue can be
solved.

• Galvanic current

A galvanic current in electrical terms consists of an unmodulated D.C.

This is mainly used to influence the pain threshold and produce hyperemia,
iontophoresis (skin perception) and analgesia. With the simultaneous
application of certain medicines will facilitate the better penetration of the
medicine (known as iontophoresis).

• Interrupted galvanic

Impulses with a long duration are classified under this category. They are
used for the stimulation of nondenervated muscles.

T TECHNOMED ELECTRONICS 4
T MICROSTIM GENIUS

• Faradic type

A faradic type current is a short duration current (0.7mSEC) pulse

width and a frequency of 50 - 100Hz. This can be used for Analgesia,
hyperemia and muscle relaxation.

• Surged faradic type

If the intensity of the successive impulses increases gradually reaching

a peak value and decreases in the same manner, then the type of current is said
to be "surged". Muscular contraction and relaxation occurs during this surging.

• Triangular pulsed current

Applications include making I/T curves and treatment of denervated

muscle tissue. These types of waveforms are not painful because of absence of
the sharper edges as existing in the square type of waveforms.

• TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical nerve stimulation)

TENS uses short duration pulses (100uS) to stimulate sensory nerves

rather than motor nerves. It encourages the production of ENDORPHIN.

5. DESCRIPTION OF CONTROLS

The following descriptions are with respect to Fig.1.

• POWER SOCKET:

This connects the machine with the mains through the mains cable provided.

• POWER SWITCH:

Used to switch ON and OFF the machine. (GREEN light illumination

indicates the ON operation.)

• LIQUID CRYSTAL ZOOMED DISPLAY:

Displays all the operational Instructions and menu oriented screens, which
facilitates the easier programming.

• RESET SWITCH:
[

Reset key can be pressed at any instance to stop the treatment or to initialize
the machine.

• SELECT SWITCH:

Pressing this key will store the blinking parameter in the memory and
proceeds the next screen (or) menu.

• S10 SWITCH:

Pressing this key will increment the 2nd digit of the programming No and
treatment time. (Ref fig.2)

T TECHNOMED ELECTRONICS 7
T MICROSTIM GENIUS

• S1 SWITCH:

Pressing this will increment the 1st digit of the programming no and
treatment time.

• INTENSITY CONTROL:

The increase of current (dosage) can be done by rotating this control in

clockwise direction, cautiously and gently, until the patient starts feeling the
current. It can be increased until the patient can tolerate. The current in the
channel is measured and displayed.

Safety :

Once the treatment is over this control should be brought to the initial
position by rotating it in anticlockwise direction. Incase if this control is not in
minimum position, the unit will not deliver the current to the patient as a
precaution until you brought it to minimum position. All through you will hear a
warning signal and display of the message "INTENSITY KNOB NOT AT
ZERO" on LCD display.

7. OPERATION & PROGRAMING PROCEDURE

1. Decide what type treatment to be given. (For Ex. Faradic or Tens)

2. The list of all the combinations with the corresponding Program

Nos. is given in Section 10. Pick out the desired Program No.

3. Switch on the Equipment. Confirm that whether the POWER cord is in

the POWER socket.

4. Moisten the electrodes and attach them with the cables provided.

5. Fix the electrodes on the body of the patient at the position in such way
that the output current crosses at the area to be treated.

6. Follow the systematic programming approach given in Fig.2 Make sure

that the intensity control is increased gradually to the level tolerated by
the patient.

7. After the treatment, turn the intensity control anticlockwise to minimum.

8. Disconnect the electrodes and switch off the unit.

T TECHNOMED ELECTRONICS 10
T MICROSTIM GENIUS

8. SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS

1. Follow the POWER ON and POWER OFF procedure carefully.

2. Each time once treatment is over, turn intensity control to the initial
position.

3. Keep the PROGRAM LIST carefully, as it is very important while

programming.

4. Please don’t use Ultrasound GEL for Genius.

9. MUSCLE STIMULATOR WAVEFORMS

The muscle stimulator programs can be divided as follows.

1. GALVANIC

PLAIN DC CURRENT.

2. PULSED GALVANIC

Pulsed DC current. Interval between the pulses can be selected from the
Rest time (Rest time = 1Sec – 5Sec).
PULSE WIDTH = 0.01mSec – 300mSec.

W T

W = Width of the pulse

T = Time duration between the pulses
(Rest time - Controlled from the panel)

3. PLAIN FARADIC CURRENT

Pulsed Current of Frequency 50Hz & 100Hz. The Pulse Width is

0.7msec.

W T

W = Width of the pulse (0.7msec)

T = Time duration between the pulses
(Rest time - Controlled from the panel)

T TECHNOMED ELECTRONICS 12
T MICROSTIM GENIUS

4. SURGED FARADIC CURRENT

Amplitude of the above said faradic current of frequency, 50Hz & 100Hz
increases from zero to the set value, within duration as decided by the program.

D T D

D = Surge duration
T = Time duration between the surges
(Rest time - controlled from the panel)

5. TRIANGULAR PULSE

The pulse is of triangular in shape. The duration between the pulses is the
rest time.

W T W

W = Width of the pulse

T = Time duration between the triangles
(Rest time - controlled from the panel)
