Nonfiction Book Freakonomics
The nonfiction book Freakonomics, published in 2005, describes itself as A Rogue Economist
Explores the Hidden Side of Everything . It connects anything from game fixing and statistics to
abortion and crime to the economics of those things. The aim and scope of Freakonomics is to
analyze data and statistics and relate it to what is occurring in the United States as well as the
rest of the world. The fictional movie 12 Angry Men follows 12 men as the decide whether or not
there is enough evidence to sentence an 18 year old boy to death for allegedly killing his father. It
shows the struggles of the 12 men as they try to reach a verdict on the case. This movie was
released in 1957. Freakonomicshas five main ideas that are explored over the course of 6 main
chapters. In the introduction chapter, The Hidden Side of Everything it is stated that the book is
based on a few fundamental ideas being: Incentives are the cornerstone of modern life ; The
conventional wisdom is often wrong ;... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the beginning of the movie when Juror 1 starts off by a show of hands on who thinks the boy
is guilty or not guilty, every single juror except for 1 raises their hand saying that the boy is
guilty. Juror 8, the one that abstained says that he did not vote guilty because But we have a
reasonable doubt, and that s something that s very valuable in our system. No jury can declare a
man guilty unless it s sure . Ignorance is also another main idea within the movie. Juror 10 has a
distinct bias against people who live in slums, saying that they re born liars . Juror 9 quickly
follows back by saying Only an ignorant man can believe that . Later on in the movie, Juror 8 also
says It s always difficult to keep personal prejudice out of a thing like this. And wherever you run
into it, prejudice always obscures the truth after Juror 10 says more discriminatory things about

Citizenship and Government in Henry Thoreau s Civil Disobedience
Philosophers, historians, authors, and politicians have spent centuries pondering the relationship
between citizens and their government. It is a question that has as many considerations as there are
forms of government and it is rarely answered satisfactorily. A relatively modern theorist, author
Henry Thoreau, introduced an idea of man as an individual, rather than a subject, by thoroughly
describing the way a citizen should live many of his works. He indirectly supplements the arguments
he presents in his essay Civil Disobedience through a comprehensive selection of adages found in his
other works. In particular, the phrases A simple and independent mind does not ... Show more content

The only real power the State holds over any individual is the promise of brute force; it never
intentionally confronts a man s sense, intellectual or moral, but only his body, his senses (687).
Therefore, many acts the State requires will be unjust they can and will force a man to slave for the
sake of an ordeal he does not believe in. As Thoreau notes in Civil Disobedience, a wise man will
only be useful as a man (678). In essence, Thoreau believes that a man who toils at any ruling
institution s bidding simply because it bid him to do so sacrifices his own facilities as a human
being. He then becomes nothing more than a man put on a level with wood and earth and stones...
Command[ing] no more respect than men of straw, or a lump of dirt (678).
Another quotation that helps to explicate Thoreau s Civil Disobedience is To be awake is to be
alive. I have never yet met a man who was quite awake. In this phrase, Thoreau uses the term
awake as an euphemism for being fully aware of one s concept of right and fully in control of one s
moral and physical existence. Understandably, people who are consistently awake, in this sense of
the word, are hard to find: There are nine hundred and ninety nine patrons of virtue to one virtuous
man (680).
Also, the fact that Thoreau has never met a man who was quite awake implies that fully conscious
individuals have difficulty existing in modern
The Conflict Process Model and Its Application in...
Introduction
This essay endeavours to not only discuss the elements of the conflict process model such as the
reasons or sources that can trigger conflict in an organisational setting, with particular reference to
behavioural factors and what positive and negative impacts that can thus be resulted, but will also
discuss the different behavioural characteristics and mechanisms that various cultural backgrounds
reveal in order to manage conflict. It will further evaluate the consequences and drawbacks from
stereotyping particular cultural groups and analyse the role and responsibility of the management in
understanding the cause of conflicts and specifically cross cultural conflict and how they could be
solved effectively.

Every action that they engage in after the emotions have been developed is aimed at proving their
superiority to others (Deutsch 2006). In most cases, employees are engaged in ensuring they are
viewed as the better ones in any undertaking in the organisation. Research indicates that relationship
conflict have more negative effects than task conflict. The fact that relationship conflicts result in the
use of emotions in coming up with solutions makes it more stressful to the employees.
Behavioural factors that can manifest conflict Organisational conflicts are characterised by a variety
of factors and in particular behavioural. These may take different forms depending on the nature in
which they are portrayed. They could either be written, oral or physical. The oral behaviour that
manifests conflict in the organisation involves a case where the employees engage in exchange of
unpleasant words that display the existence of the conflict. Secondly, the conflict may be in the form
of written documents that bear evidence of conflict (Popejoy 2002). Such documents may be in form
of e mails that are exchanged between the parties in conflict in the organisation. Finally, the conflict
in the organisation may be portrayed in terms of physical confrontation among the employees and
this is the highest limit that the conflict in the organisation can be portrayed through (Popejoy 2002).
There are different approaches that could be used by people of different cultural
Standardized Testing
GED, SAT, ACT, and more test are standardize tests. Students need to take this test in order to
graduate from high school or college. In American society, standardize tests are test that schools use
to measure students academic achievement, or to show whether students are ready to progress to the
next stage of their educations. While the testis designed to measure student s ability, many people are
concerned about the use of the tests. Standardize test can measure students knowledge, but it is not
meant to be testing students creativity and other skills. I believe that the schools should not over use
the standardize tests because standardize tests can only measure small part of education. Also, the
test does not value diversity and is unreliable... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are wide range of students who take the tests. They have different culture and backgrounds,
different way of learning or thinking, different past experience, and different level of English
proficiency (Katherine 4). All these factors can affect the result of the test. Sometimes, the students
way of thinking is different or their past experience is different that make them choose the wrong
answer. The tests is the same no whether where you are from. That might put the test taker who do
not have English as their first language in a disadvantage. These kind of student test the test before
they even master English. It will certainly affect their performance on the test. It might be because
they do not understand some word in English that make them unable or choosing the wrong answer.
It is unfair for those people. The test also create social inequality. The standardized test has become
bias because certain group or people has advantage over the other
The Public Protest Of The Boston Tea Party
A man watches a white crescent moon shining upon a Boston harbor. As he sat and watched the
light reflect on the roaring sea, and hear the waves crash against the shore, he catches a peculiar
site. Wild men they seem to be, throwing boxes of tea into the calm ocean waters from three
British cargo vessels. The incident became The Boston Tea Party, which occurred in the year 1773
three years before the Declaration of Independence was issued to King George lll. Through these
actions and many more acts of civil disobediencethe citizens exercised their individual rights to a
peaceful protest to hopefully help present the idea that what the monarchy was doing for instance,
taxation without representation, trade barriers, and many more acts were... Show more content on

These changes could not have taken place if it weren t for King and his followers protests. When
faced with a peaceful protest, the government was able to listen to and address the concerns of
their people, and it made America a greater nation. As much as it is our duty to make changes, it
also imperative that we follow the laws that are put in place to keep justice, order, and peace. As the
philosopher Thomas Hobbes said In the place where the laws do not exist, insecurity and chaos are
the norm. What s more, civilization cannot occur in a world that is lawless (Hobbes 256). Drinking
and driving is one example. From all 35,000 fatal car crashes in the United States 9,000 of those
crashes involved some form of alcohol. Those fatalities could have easily been avoided if the
people would have obeyed their civil duty and followed the law. Jury duty is very important due
because you re helping the government come to an important decision. It was invented by our
founding fathers as the final checks and balances of the United States justice system. U.S. citizens
work in tandem with the judge and their fellow jury members to execute an honest and fair trial to
decide the fate of the defendant. The protection of our rights and liberties is largely achieved through
the teamwork of judge and jury who, working together in a common effort, put into practice the
Exploratory Research Philosophy Paper
With the understanding of the research philosophy and the selection of the appropriate approach
made above, now it is much easier to strategize the type of research to solve the research problem
and its sub problems. There are many strategies in research. The most common ones are
experimenting, survey, case study, action research, grounded theory, ethnography and archival
research.
Before deciding the strategy for the research, it is important to understand the purpose of this
research. Is it intended to explore or describe or explain the phenomena? The exploratory research is
intended to gain the base information about the problem by defining the terms, explore the root of
the problem, testing hypothesis and provide a solution to the problem.

tendencies. Moreover it debunks the myths surrounding suicide such as they must be weak or just
want attention. In almost every case the individual had one or more mental illness that went
unnoticed or untreated. This source is vey useful as it has multiple informational graphs and
discussed pro and cons to college screenings. Suicide prevention movement and warning signs of

the other sources there are example of real teens who took their lives and the information that was

Compare To Kill A Mockingbird And The Color Purple
Scout s challenge of the traditional ways of living is where To Kill a Mockingbird differs from
The Color Purple. Scout is a strong character that continually inspires the numerous readers of the
novel, especially when she notes that ladies seemed to live in faint horror of men (Lee 267). Scout
does not include herself in her observation, but in The Color Purple, Celie embodies Scout s
statement. In contrast to Scout, Celie lives in fear of the men that abuse her. When her sister
Nettie tells her to fight, she writes I don t know how to fight. All I know how to do is stay alive
(Walker 17). The major difference between these two characters is that Scout challenges society
while Celie backs away from it. Reflected by the March on Washington in 1963, people want to
follow strong personalities that emerge to lead others and have similar feelings and ideas. For the
event alone, an estimated 250,000 people attended the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom (
March on Washington ). The March on Washington was organized by A. Philip Randolph, Bayard
Rustin, Whitney Young, Martin Luther King Jr., James Farmer, and John Lewis, who brought
together thousands for the event as well as an abundant amount of outside supporters that could not
attend the march. Scout mirrors this as an inspirational character when she challenges gender roles
and racial equality in the same way as those organizing the March on Washington. On the other hand,
the same cannot be said of Celie, who
The Lone Ranger And Tonto Fistfight In Heaven, And The...
In Battle Royal , The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven , and The Things They Carried ,
all three authors focus on the actions of the lead characters, and how the past reflects on their
behavior and decisions in the present. These three stories have several things in common: The
protagonists are haunted by someone or something, which causes their struggle with their self
identity. To be specific, the main characters are constantly troubled by a close one that they lost,
and also by personal events, which then results in them being confused and lost on who they
should be and how they should behave in society. Battle Royal by Ralph Ellison talks about a
young, ginger colored man, who feels contradicted on how he should act in a society where people
of color are still oppressed, and at the same time where the word equality is a sensitive expression.
The protagonist, who is remained nameless and invisible throughout the narrative, is the narrator
of the whole story and he describes that, He was an odd old guy, my grandfather, and I am told I
take after him (Ellison 1142). This points out that our young protagonist might have been a modest
and timid person, because his grandfather had been the meekest of men (1142). Just before
reaching his last breathe, his grandfather confesses about being a traitor and a spy in the enemy s
country (1142). To the protagonist, It was as though he had not died at all, his words caused so
much anxiety (1143). His
Brutality of Bioterrorism and Biowarfare Essays
Imagine this: you wake up hours before your alarm sounds to find your entire neighborhood in
chaos; people running, robbing banks and stores, and bodies are littering the once calm streets.
Over the night, a government run biological experiment dealing with germ weapons had been
released, infecting, destroying, and causing panic across the globe. As a single, globalized society,
we need to heighten our security against biological weapons and biological terror to prevent the
endangerment of mankind. It would be most beneficial to our species if we did not try to use or
experiment with biological weapons, seeing as they are engineered specifically to create social,
economic, governmental, military, and general fear and disruption. Bioterror... Show more content on

These experiments were done using the Chinese Manchurians, after the area was taken over by
Japan in 1931. The Japanese killed roughly 10,000 people with their use of anthrax, cholera,
typhoid, and various plagues during the duration of the war (Lewis). Seeing as such horrid and
devastating examples of biological warfare have been used as far back as the fourteenth century,
one can obviously see that biowarfare isn t just a passing form of fear instilling violence, but an
active part of our history. Frighteningly, not all biological weapons are made by man, but many,
and some of the deadliest, of the weapons are found in nature. Many of the viruses that have
plagued humanity come from exposure to fleas and other vermin, certain plants, or fungi.
Biological threats are classified into three categories based on severeness. Class A weapons are the
most dangerous with the highest mortality and infection rate. The classes go down to C, which are
naturally found toxins or infections that can be engineered to be a threat to society. In 2001, shortly
after the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, anthrax laced letters were received from
presumable terrorists. Anthrax, a class A weapon, is a spore producing bacterium known as Bacillus
anthracis that is usually acquired from anthrax infected cattle or meat products, but is now receiving
heightened attention for its use as a biological weapon (Biological). Class B weapons are the second
highest priority since they are
Helminths Are Parasitic Worms
As stated by Pawar et al. (2014), Helminths are parasitic worms that contribute to the global burden
of diseases of human infections that frequently spreads in developing countries. World Health
Organization (WHO) [Date Unknown] estimated 2 billion people with helminthic infection and this
population was suggested to get medicine to expel and kill the helminths from the human body.
Ascaris is an intestinal parasite of humans and pigs. It is the most common human worm infection.
The larvae and adult worms live in the small intestine and can cause intestinal disease (CDC) [Date
Unknown]. While people infected with Ascaris often show no symptoms. If symptoms do occur they
can be light and include abdominal discomfort. Heavy infections can cause
