If A can do a piece of work in n days, then A's 1 day
work=1/n
If A's 1 day's work=1/n, then A can finish the work in n
days.
If A can do a piece of work in 4 days, then A's 1 day's work=1/4.
If A's 1 day’s work=1/5, then A can finish the work in 5 days
A can do a bit of work in 8 days, which B alone can do in
10 days in how long both cooperating can do it?
A's 1-day work= 1/8,
B`s 1-day work = 1/10
∴ (A+B) 1-day work = (1/8+1/10) = 9/40
Both cooperating can complete it in 40/9 days.
A and B together can dive a trench in 12 days, which an
alone can dive in 30 days. In how long B alone can burrow
it?
1|Page
(A+B)'s 1-day work = 1/12,
A's 1-day work =1/30
∴ B's 1-day work = (1/12-1/30) = 3/60 = 1/20
Henceforth, B alone can dive the trench in 20 days.

1. If 9 men working 6 hours a day can do a work in 88
days. Then 6 men Working 8 hours a day can do it in how
many days?
Solution:
Let the required number of days be d
Less men, more days (indirect proportion)
More hours, less days (indirect proportion)
6 * 8 * d = 9 * 6 * 88
d = 9 * 6 * 88 / 6 * 8 So d = 99
2. If 34 men completed 2/5th of a work in 8 days working
9 hours a day. How many more man should be engaged to
finish the rest of the work in 6 days working 9 hours a
day?
Solution:
More men = more work and less men = less work i.e men(m)
are directly proportional to work(w) completed.
More men = less days and less men = more days i.e men(m)
are inversely proportional to days(d) required to complete the
work.
Work efficiency of 34 men in 8 days working 9 hours a day
is 2/5th
∴ By direct proportionality,
Remaining work = 1− 2/5=3/5
Man Day (Hours Work
remain same)
34 8 2/5
D 6 3/5
∴D=68
D/34 = [8/6 * (3/5) ÷ (2/5)]
Hence extra men required = 68−34=34men

3. If 5 women or 8 girls can do a work in 84 days. In how
many days can 10 women and 5 girls can do the same
work?
4. Solution:
Given that 5 women is equal to 8 girls to complete a work so, 10
women=16 girls.
Therefore, 10 women +5girls=16girls+5girls=21girls. 8 girls can
do a work in 84 days Then 21 girls= (8 * 84/21) =32days.
Therefore 10 women and 5 girls can work in 32 days
5. A can finish a work in 18 days and B can do the same
work in half the time taken by A. Then, working together,
what part of the same work they can finish in a day?
Solution:
A's 1-day work = 1/18
B's 1-day work = 1/9 [because B take half time than A
(A+B)'s one-day work = [(1/8) +(1/9)] = 1/6
6. A is twice as good a workman as B and together they
finish a piece of work in 18/14 days. In how many days will
A alone finish the work.
Solution:
(A's 1 day's work): (B's 1 day's work) =2:1
(A+B)'s 1 day's work =1/18
A's 1 day's work = [(1 /18) * (2 / 3)] = 1 /27
Hence, A alone can finish the work in 27 days.
7. A can do a certain work in 12 days. B is 60% more
efficient than A. How many days does B alone take to do
the same job?
Solution:
So, A's one day’s work is equal to 1/12
‘B’ is 60% more efficient than ‘A'
So, B can do 60% more work than what A do in one day.
4|Page
B's one-day work is equal to 1/12+60%(1/12)
⇒ (5 + 3)/60= 8/60 ⇒ 1/7.5
i.e. 1/12+1/20 taking LCM of 12 and 20, which is 60
B's one-day work is 1/7.5
So B can do the same work in 7.5 days or 7 days and 12 hours.
2nd Method
A's 1 days' work=1/12
B's 1 days' work = 1.6/12 =16/120 =2 /15
B shall complete the work in 15/2 days 7 ½ days
8. A can do a piece of work in 7 days of 9 hours each and
B alone can do it in 6 days of 7 hours each. How long will
they take to do it working together 8 2/5 hours a day?
Solution:
A can complete the work in (7 * 9) = 63 hours.
B can complete the work in (6 * 7) = 42 hours.
A’s 1 hour's work = (1/63) and B's 1 hour's work = (1/42)
(A + B)'s 1 hour's work = (1/63) +(1/42) = (5/126)
Both will finish the work in (126/5) hrs.
Number of days. of (42/5) hrs each = (126 * 5)/(5 * 42)=3 days.
9. A takes twice as much time as B or thrice as much
time as C to finish a piece of work. Working together they
can finish the work in 2 days. B can do the work alone in?
Solution:
Let A Take D days to finish the work.
Or A can do 1/D work in a day.
A takes twice as much as B, so B takes half as much as A
i.e, B takes D/2 days to finish the work
Or B can do 2/D work in a day.
A takes thrice as much as C, so C takes one third as A
i.e, C takes D/3 days to finish the work.
Or C can do 3/D work in a day.
Working together,
5|Page
⇒ 6/D work in a day
They can do 1/D + 2/D + 3/D work in a day.
And to complete the work they need 1/(6/D) = D/6 days
But it is given as 2 days.
So, D/6 = 2
And D = 12
B Alone can do the work in D/2 days = 6 days
2nd method
Suppose A, B and C takes T, T/2, t/3 days respectively to finish the
⇒ [ 1/T + 2 / T + 3 / T] = 1 / 2
work.
⇒T=6×2
⇒T=12
⇒ 12/2 = 6 Days.
Time taken by B
10. W can do ¼ of a work in 10 days, Y can do 40% of
work in 40 days and Z can do 1/3 of work in 13 days. Who
will complete the work first?
Work by W =10 * 4 = 40 = 40 days
Time taken to complete the work by Y = (40 * 100)/40 = 100
days.
Time taken to complete the work by Z = 13 * 3 = 39 days
Hence, Z will complete the work first.
11. A and B undertake to do a piece of work for Rs 600.A
alone can do it in 6 days while B alone can do it in 8 days.
With the help of C, they can finish it in 3 days, Find the
share of each?
A = 600/6 = 100 (Earning of A/per day)
B = 600/8 = 75 (Earning of B/per day)
So including the condition of C,
(A + B + C )= 600/3
(100 + 75 + C) = 600/3
6|Page
C = 200 - 175
C = 25
For 3 days’ work,
Share of A = 3*100 = Rs 300.
Share of B = 3*75 = Rs 225.
Share of C = 3*25 = Rs 75.
2nd Method
A's work in 1 day = 1/6
B's work in 1 day = 1/8
Combined work of A and B in 1 day = 1/6 + 1/8 = 7/24
According to the question, A, B and C together finished the work
in 3 days
A's work in 1 day + B's work in 1 day + C's work in 1 day = 1/3
C's work in 1 day = 1/3-7/24 = 1/24
So, C can finish the work in 24 days
C's share = (1/24) * 3 * 600 = Rs.75 (C has worked for 3 days)
12. A can do a piece of work in 80 days. He works at it for
10 days & then B alone finishes the remaining work in 42
days. In how much time will A and B, working together,
finish the work?
Time taken by A to complete the whole work = 80 days.
Amount of work done by A in 1 day = 1/80
Amount of work done by A in 10 days = 10/80 =1/8
Amount of work left for B = 1 - 1/8 = 7/8
Calculations for B worker:
Time taken by B to complete 7/8th of the work = 42 days
Time taken by B to complete the whole work = (42 * 8)/7= 48
days
Amount of work completed by B in 1 day = 1/48
Calculation for time taken by A + B= [(1/48) + (1/80)]
=8/240=1/30
30 days

13. P, Q and R are three typists who working
simultaneously can type 216 pages in 4 hours In one
hour , R can type as many pages more than Q as Q can
type more than P. During a period of five hours, R can
type as many pages as P can during seven hours. How
many pages does each of them type per hour?
Let the number of pages typed in one hour be p, q, r.
In one-hour P + Q + R = 216 / 4
So P + Q + R = 54 -----------(1)
Now in one hour, R can type as many pages more than Q as Q can
type more than P.
So R – Q = Q – P
2 Q = P + R-------------(2)
In 5 hours, R can type as many pages as P can during 7 hours.
7 P = 5 R-------------(3)
Using 2 in 1 we get
3 Q = 54
Q = 18
Now putting the value in 2 we get
P + R = 36
From eqn 3 and 4 we get
P + 7 P / 5 = 36
P = 15
From eqn 4 we get
R = 36 – 15
R = 21
14. Abid and Javaid are working on an assignment. Abid
takes 6 hours to type 32 pages on a computer, while
Javaid takes 5 hours to type 40 pages. How much time will
they take, working together on two different computers to
type an assignment of 110 pages?
Number of pages typed by Ronald in 1 hour = 32/6=16/3
Number of pages typed by Elan in 1 hour = 40/5=8
8|Page
Number of pages typed by both in 1 hour = 16/3 + 8 = 40/3
Time taken by both to type 110 pages =

15. Two workers A and B are engaged to do a work. A
working alone takes 8 hours more to complete the job
than if both working together. If B worked alone, he would
need 4 1/2 hours more to compete the job than they both
working together. What time would they take to do the
work together?
Let both are complete the work in T hour.
A complete the work in T+ 8 hour
B complete the work in T+ 9/2 hour
1/(T+8) + 1/(T+9/2) = 1/T
solve the equation =2T2=72
T2=36⇒ T=6.
so both can complete the work together in 6 days.
16. A and B can do a work in 12 days, B and C in 15 days,
C and A in 20 days. If A, B and C work together, they will
complete the work in how many days?
A and B can do a piece of work in 12 days.
In 1 day, (A+B) can do 1/12th of the work.
B and C can do a piece of work in 15 days.
In 1 day, (B+C) can do 1/15th of the work.
A and C can do a piece of work in 20 days.
In 1 day, (A+C) can do 1/20th of the work.
Now, if we add on the work done by (A+B), (B+C) and (A+C), we
will get the work done by (A+B+C) collectively in 1 day.
Therefore,
(A+B) + (B+C) + (A+C) = 1/12 + 1/15 + 1/20
9|Page
2 (A+B+C) = 12/60
On simplification, we get
(A+B+C) = 1/10
It means that,
In 1 day, (A+B+C) together can do 1/10th of the work.
17. A and B can do a work in 8 days, B and C can do the
same work in 12 days. A, B and C together can finish it in 6
days. A and C together will do it in how many days?
A+ B = 1/8
B + C = 1/12
A+B+C = 1/6
Put A+ B value in third equation find C
C = 1/24
Then put B + C value in third equation find A
A=1/12
(A + C) = [(2 + 1)/24)] = 1/8 =8
So, A and C together will do the work in 8 days.
18. A can do a certain work in the same time in which B
and C together can do it. If A and B together could do it in
10 days and C alone in 50 days, then B alone could do it in
how many days?
A=B+C and A+B=1/10
C=1/50
A+B+C=6/50
2*(B+C) =6/50
B+C=3/50
B=2/50
B completes it in 25 days

So, B alone could do the work in 25 days.
19. 45 men can complete a work in 16 days. Si*/four days
after they started working,30 more men joined them. How
many days will they now take to complete the remaining
work?
Let the remaining work will finish in D days
45 * 16 = [(45 * 4) + (45 + 36) * D]
540/81 =D
D = 20/3
20. A is 50% as efficient as B. C does half the work done
by A&B together. If C alone does the work n 40 days, then
C does half work of A & B ⇒ C = (A+B)/ 2
A, B and C together can do the work in:
Work done by C in a day is= [1/((A+B)/ 2)]
Work done by C in a day is 1/40
1/40 = 2/(A+B)
2/40 = 1/A+B
1/A+B = 1/20
So A & B together take 20 days to complete a work
Now A, B & C together take
1/A + 1/B +1/C
11 | P a g e
= 1/20 + 1/40= 3/40
= 40/3 days
= 13.33 days
2nd method
A = 50% more efficient than B
C = 1/2 of work done by A and B together
C alone can do the work in = 40 days
(A's one day's work): (B's one day's work) =150: 100 ⇒3:2
Calculation:
Let A's one day's work be 3w and B's one day's work be 2w.
5w/2 = 1/40 ⇒w= (1/40 * 2/5 )
According to the question C's one day's work = (3w+2w)/2 =
⇒w=1/100 A's one day's work be 3/100 and B's one day's work

⇒ 15/200 3/40 = (A + B + C)'s one-day work A, B, C can complete
the whole work in 40/3 days.
21. A can finish a work in 18 days and B can do the same

22. A can finish a work in 24 days, B in 9 days and C in 12
days. B&C start the work but are forced to leave after 3
days. The remaining work done by A in:
(B+ C)'s 1 day's work = [ 1/ 9 + 1 / 12] =7 / 36
Work done by B and C in 3 days = [ 7 / 36 * 3] = 7/12
Remaining work = [1 - 7 / 12] = 5 / 12
Now 1/ 24 work is done by A in 1 day.
So,5 /12 work is done by A in [24 * 5 / 2] = 10 days
2nd method
As A and B can finish the work in 12 days’ time,
Hence (A + B)’s one day’s work = 1/12;
similarly
(B + C)’s one day’s work = 1/16
Now,
A’s 5 days’ work + B’s 7 days’ work + C’s 13 days’ work = 1
A’s 5 days’ work + B’s 5 days’ work + B’s 2 days’ work + C’s 2
days’ work + C’s 11 days’ work = 1
Or {(A + B)’s 5 days’ work} + {(B + C)’s 2 days’ work} + C’s 11
days’ work = 1
i.e. 5/12 + 2/16 + C’s 11 days’ work = 1
or C’s 11 days’ work = 1 - (5/12 + 2/16)
or C’s 11 days’ work = 1 - 13/24
or C’s 11 days’ work = 11/24
or C’s 1 day’s work = 11/24 * 1/11 = 1/24
23. W and Y can do a piece of work in 20 days and 12

Hence, total time taken = (6 + 4) days = 10 days.
24. A does 4/5 of work in 20 days. He then calls in B and
they together finish the remaining work in 3 days. How
long B alone would take to do the whole work?
A does 4/5 of the work in 20 days, or he would take (5/4) * 20 =
25 days to do the whole work, alone.
A does (1/25) th of the work in 1 day.
A and B do (1/5)th of the work in 3 days.
Or A and B, together, do (1/15) th of the work in 1 day.
So, B alone does (1/15) - (1/25) = (25–15) / (15 * 25) = 10/375 =
2/75th of the work in a day.
Thus, B alone will do the whole work in 37.5 days.

25. A and B can do a piece of work in 45 days and 40 days
respectively. They began to do the work together but A
leaves after some days and then B completed the
remaining work in 23 days. The number of days after
which A left the work was?
A's 1 days' work = 1 / 45
B's 1 days' work = 1 / 40
Suppose A left the work after D days of the start of the work.
Then, Work done by A in D days = D / 45
Work done by B in (D+23) days= (D+23) / 40
⇒ (8D+9D+207) / 360 = 1
Given, D / 45 + (D+23)/1 = 1
⇒17D=360-207 = 153
⇒D=153 / 17
= 9 days
A left after 9 days of start of work.
26. A alone can complete a work in 16 days and B alone
can complete the same in 12 days. Starting with A, they
work on alternate days. The total work will be completed
in how many days?
A can compete the work in 16 days. That means, per day, A can
do 1/16th part of the work.
Similarly, B can do 1/12th part of the work per day.
So, in 2 days, working alternately, A and B can do (1/16 + 1/12) =
(7/48) = 0.145 units of work
15 | P a g e
In other words, to do 0.145 units of work, it took them 2 days.
So, to do 1 unit of work, it takes them 2/0.145 = 13.79 days.
Approximately 13.8 or 14 days should be the answer.
27. A,B and C can do a piece of work in 20,30 and 60 days

Now, work is done in 3 days.

Whole work will be done in (3 * 5) = 15 days.
28. A, B, and C can do a piece of work in 20, 30 and 60
days respectively. In how many days can A do the work if
he is assisted by B and C on every third day?
A does 1/20th of the work in a day while B does 1/30th and C does
1/60th of the work in a day.
So A works for 3 days and B and C work with him on the third day.
Thus in three days the work accomplished is (3/20) +(1/30)+
(1/60) = (9/60)+(2/60)+(1/60) = 12/60 or 1/5.
So in 3 days, the work completed is 1/5th, so the entire work will
be completed in [3/ (1/5)] = 15 days.
29. Seven men can complete a work in 12 days. They
started the work and after 5 days, two men left. In how
many days will the work be completed by the remaining
men?
16 | P a g e
Seven men can complete the work in 12 days
Total Work =7 * 12= 84 parts
Up to 5 days, all of them worked together
So, work completed =5 * 7= 35 parts
Remaining work = 49 parts
As 2 men left, so there are 5 men to complete the remaining task.
So, Time Taken = 9.8 days
30. 12 men complete a work in 9 days. After they have
worked for 6 days, 6 more men joined them. How many
days will they take to complete the remaining work?
Total work =12 * 9 =108.
Work done in 6days = 12 * 6=72
Remaining work=36.
Now 6more men joined
Total men=18.
Therefore, no of days=36/18=2days.
2nd method
1 man's 1 day work = 1/108
12 men's 6 day's work = 1/9 * 6 = 2/3
Remaining work = 1 - 2/3 = 1/3
16 men's 1 day work = 1/108 * 16 = 4/27
4/27 work is done by them in 1 day.
1/3 work is done by them in 27/4 * 1/3 = 9/4 days.
31. A man, a woman and a boy can complete a job in 3,4

Solution:
Work done by 1 man in 1 day = 1/3
Work done by 1 woman in 1 day = 1/4
Work done by 1 boy in 1 day = 1/12
Suppose n boys are needed to help 1 man and 1 woman to
complete the same job in 1/4 days
17 | P a g e
Work done by n boys in 1 day = n/12 Work done in 1 day by 1
man, 1 woman and n boys = (1/3) + (1/4) + (n/12) ((1/3)+(1/4)+
(n/12)}*(1/4) = 1 (1/3)+(1/4)+(n/12)} = 4 4+3+n=48 7+n=48
n=41
32. Sixteen men can complete a work in twelve days.
Twenty-four children can complete the same work in 18
days. 12 men and 8 children started working and after
eight days three more children joined them. How many
days will they now take to complete the remaining work?
Question 16M*12=24C * 18 ⇒M/C=9/4 Total work= 16 * 9 * 12
Let’s assume Men as "M" and children as "C". So as per the
Let’s assume days required to complete remaining work = D
days. (12×9+8 * 4) * 8+(12 * 9+11 * 4) * D=16 * 9 * 12
D=608//152= 4 days.
2nd method
1 man's 1 day's work= 1 / 192 1 child's 1 day's work= 1 / 432
Work done in 8 days =8 * [12/192 + 8/432] 8[1 / 16 + 1 / 54]
=35/34
Remaining work =1-35/34 = 19 / 54
(12 men + 11 children)'s day's work = [12 /192 + 11 /432] = 19 /
216
Now, = 19 / 216 work is done by them in 1 day
19 / 54 work will be done by them in =[216/19 * 19 /54= 4 days
33. Twenty-four men can complete a work in 16 days.
Thirty- two women can complete the same work in twenty-
four days. Si*teen men and sixteen women started
working and worked for 12 days. How many more men are
to be added to complete the remaining work in 2 days?
⇒ Work that 16 men complete in 12 days = (16/24) * (12/ 16) =
24 men complete the work in 16 days
1/2 part of work in 12 days.
32 women complete the work in 24 days
18 | P a g e
∴ Work that 16 women complete in 14 days = (16/32) * (14/24) =
7/24 part of work in (12 + 2) = 14 days.
So, the remaining part of the work which done by (sixteen men +
sixteen women) and required additional no. of men in 2 days = 1
- (1/2 + 7/24) = 1/2 - 7/24 = 5/24 (part)
Now, in 2 days 5/24 part of the work is done by (24 * 16)/ 2 * (5/
∴ Required additional no. of men = 40 - 16 =24.
24) = 40 men
2nd method
1 man's 1 days' work= 1 / (24 * 16 )
16 men's 1days' work = 16 / (24 * 16)
1 woman's 1 days' work =1 / (32 * 24 )
16 women's 1 days' work=16 / (32 * 24) = 1 / 48
12 days' work of (16 men + 16 women) = 12 (1 /24 + 1/ 48) =12
* 3 / 48 = 3 / 4
Remaining work = 1 - ¾ = 1 / 4
Now (16 men's + 16 women's) 2 days' work = 2 (1 /24 + 1/ 48) =
2 * 1 / 16 = 1 / 8
Remaining work= 1 / 4 - 1 / 8 = 1 / 8
1/384 is 1 man's 1 days' work
Hence 1 / 8 work will be done in 2 days by (384 * 1 / 8 * 1 / 2) =
24 men.
Scenerio with 16 men
We have 16 men completing the work in 15 days.
Time taken by 1 man to complete the entire work = 16 * 15 =
240 days.
Hence, part of work done by a man in 1 day = 1/240.
We have 24 children doing the work in 20 days.
Hence, time taken by 1 child to complete the entire work alone =
24 * 20 = 480 days.
Hence, part of work done by a child in a day = 1/480.
Let n be number of days taken by 8 men and 8 children to
complete the work.
We have =n * 8 * [(1/240) + (1/480)] = 1
19 | P a g e
⇒n * 8 * (3/480) = 1.
⇒n=20 .. They will complete the work in 20 days.
n/20 = 1
34. 4 men and 6 women can complete a work in 8 days,
while 3 men and 7 women can complete it in 10 days. In
how many days will 10 women complete it?
Let 1 man's 1 day's work = M
and 1 woman's 1 day's work = W.
Then, 4M + 6W =1/8
and 3M + 7W =1/10
Solving the two equations, we get:
M =11/400
W =1/400
1 woman's 1 day's work =1/400
10 women's 1 day's work = (1/400) * 10) =1/40
Hence, 10 women will complete the work in 40 days
35. One man,3 women and 4 boys can do a piece of work
in 96hrs, 2 men and 8 boys can do it in 80 hrs, 2 men & 3
women can do it in 120hr. 5Men & 12 boys can do it in?
Let 1 man's 1 hour's work=M
1 woman's 1 hour's work=N
1 boy's 1 hour's work=O
Then, M+3N+4O=1/96 (1)
2M+8O= 1/80 (2)
adding (2) & (3) and subtracting (1)
3M+4O=1/96 (4)
From (2) and (4), we get M=1/480
Substituting, we get: N=1/720 and O= 1/960
(5 men+ 12 boy)'s 1 hour's work=5/480 +12/960 =1/96 +
1/80=11/480.Therefore, 5 men and 12 boys can do the work in
480/11 or 43 (7/11) hours.

(A+B)'s 1-day work = 1/12,
∴ B's 1-day work = (1/12 - 1/30) = 3/60 = 1/20
A's 1-day work =1/30
Henceforth, B alone can dive the trench in 20 days.

41. A and B can do a bit of work in 12 days. B and C can
do it in 15 days while C and A can do it in 20 days. In how
long will they complete it cooperating? Additionally, in
how long can A alone do it?
(A+B)'s 1-day work = 1/12, (B+C)'s 1-day work = 1/15,
(C+A)'S 1-day work = 1/20
∴ (A+B+C) `s 1-day work = (1/2 * 1/5) = 1/10
2(A+B+C)'s 1-day work = (1/12+ 1/15+ 1/20) = 12/60 = 1/5
∴ working together they can complete the work in 10 days.
A's 1-day work = (1/10 - 1/15) = 1/30,
B`s 1-day work = (1/10 - 1/20) = 1/20
∴ A alone can take the necessary steps in 30 days.
C's 1-day work = (1/10 - 1/12) = 1/60
42. A can fabricate a divider in 30 days, while B alone can
assemble it in 40 days, if they construct it together and
get an installment of RS. 7000, what B's offer?
A's 1-day work = 1/30, B's 1-day work = 1/40,
Proportion of their shares = 1/30 : 1/40 = 4:3
B's offer = (7000 * 3/7) = Rs. 3000
43. A can do a bit of work in 10 days while B alone can do
it in 15 days. They cooperate for 5 days and whatever
remains of the work is finished by C in 2 days. On the off
chance that they get Rs. 4500 for the entire work, by what
means if they partition the cash?
(A+B)'s 5 days’ work = 5(1/10 + 1/15) = (5 * 1/6) = 5/6
Remaining work = (1 - 5/6) = 1/6
C's 2 days’ work = 1/6
(A's 5-day work): (B's 5-day work): (C's 2 days’ work)
= 5/10: 5/15: 1/6
= 15: 10:5 = 3:2:1
A's offer = (4500 * 3/6) = Rs. 2250
B's offer = (4500 * 2/6) = Rs. 1500
23 | P a g e
C's share= (4500 * 1/6) = Rs. 750
44. A and B can do a bit of work in 12 days. B and C can
do it in 15 days and C and A can do it in 20 days. A alone
can do in:
(A+B)'s 1 day work = 1/12
(B + C) 's 1 day work = 1/15
(C+A) 's 1 day work = 1/20
2(A+B+C) 's 1-day work = (1/12+ 1/15+ 1/20) = (5+4+3)/60 =
∴ (A+B+C) 1-day work = 1/10
12/60 = 1/5
⇒A 's 1-day work = (1/10 - 1/15) = 1/30
⇒A alone can do this work in 30 days.
45. A can do 1/3 of a work in 5 days and B can do 2/5 of
the work in 10 days. In how long both A and B together
can do in?
1/3 work is done by A in 5 days.
Whole work will be done by A in 15 days.
2/5 work is done by B in 10 days.
Whole work will be done by B in (10 * 5/2) days i.e. 25 days
∴A and B can do the work in 75/8 days
(A+B) 's 1 days’ work = (1/15 + 1/25) = 8/75
46. A can do a bit of work in 10 days and B can do it in 20
days. They begin the work together. But after 5 days, A
leaves off. B will do the remaining work in?
(A+B)'s 5 days’ work = 5(1/10+ 1/20) = 3/4;
Remaining work = (1- 3/4) = 1/4
1/20 work is done by B in 1 day.
1/4 work is done B in (20 * 1/4) = 5 days
47. A and B can finish a bit of work in 12 days and 18
days separately. A starts to take every necessary step
24 | P a g e
and they work on the other hand each one in turn for one
day each. The entire work will be finished in?
Working on alternate day s(A+B) 's 2 days’ work = (1/12 +
1/18)= 5/36
(A+B) 2 days’ work = 5/36
(A+B)'s 14 days’ work = (5/36 * 7) = 35/36;
Remaining work = (1 - 35/36) = 1/36
Now it is A's turn.
1/12 work is done by A in 1 day.
1/36 work is done by A in (12* 1/36) day = 1/3 day
Total time taken = 43/3 days
48. 4 men and 6 ladies complete an occupation in 8 days
while 3 men and 7 ladies complete it in 10 days. 10 ladies
cooperating will complete it in?
Let 1 men 1-day work be M and 1 woman 1-day work be W. then
4M+6 W= 1/8 ... (1) 3M+7W = 1/10 ...(11)
10 W = (4/10- 3/8) = (16-15)/40 = 1/40 ⇒W = 1/400
Multiplying (1) by 3, (11) by 4 and subtracting, we get
1 woman’s 1-day work = 1/400
10 women 1-day work = (1/400*10) = 1/40
Hence 10 women can finish the work in 40 days
49. 10 men can complete a bit of work in 10 days, though
it takes 12 ladies to complete it in 10 days. 15 men and 6
ladies attempt to finish the work; how long will they take
10 men = 12 women ⇒1 women = 6/5 women
to finish it?
(15 men + 6 women) = ((15 * 6/5) + 6) = 24 women
∴ 24 women will do it in (10 * 12/24) = 5 days
12 women can do a piece of work in 10 days.
50. A can do 1/4th some portion of the work in 10 days, B
can do 40% of the work in 40 days and C can do 1/3 rd of
25 | P a g e
the work in 13 days. Who will finish the work first?
1/4th of the work is done by A in 10 days.
Whole work will be done by A in (10 * 4/1) = 40 days
40/100 of the work is done by B in 40 days.
Whole work will be done by B in (40 * 5/2) = 100 days
1/3 of the work is done by C in 13 days.
Whole work will be done by C in (13 * 3/1) = 39 days
Hence, C will complete the work first.
51. A, B and C can do a piece of work in 24 days, 30 days
and 40 days respectively. They began the work together
but C left 4 days before the completion of the work. In
how many days work will be completed?
One day's work of A, B and C = (1/24 + 1/30 + 1/40) = 1/10.
C leaves 4 days before completion of the work, which means only
A and B work during the last 4 days.
Work done by A and B together in the last 4 days = 4 (1/24 +
1/30) = 3/10.
Remaining Work = 7/10, which was done by A, B and C in the
initial number of days.
Number of days required for this initial work = 7 days.
Thus, the total numbers of days required = 4 + 7 = 11 days.
52. P can complete a work in 12 days working 8 hours a
day. Q can complete the same work in 8 days working 10
hours a day. If both p and Q work together, working 8
hours a day, in how many days can they complete the
work?
P can complete the work in (12 * 8) hrs = 96 hrs
Q can complete the work in (8 * 10) hrs=80 hrs
Therefore, P's 1-hour work=1/96 and Q's 1-hour work= 1/80
(P+Q)'s 1 hour's work = (1/96) + (1/80) = 11/480. So both P and
Q will finish the work in 480/11 hrs

53. A can do a piece of work in 10 days, B in 15 days.
They work together for 5 days; the rest of the work is
finished by C in two more days. If they get Rs. 3000 as
wages for the whole work, what are the daily wages of A,
B and C respectively (in Rs):
According to question, work done by A and B in 5 days
= (1/10 + 1/15) * 5 = 5/6
Rest work = 1 - 5 / 6 = 1 / 6
C alone can do the work in 6 * 2 = 12 days.
Ratio of their work=5/10 : 5 /12 : 2 / 12 = 3: 2 : 1
Share of money = 3 / 6 * 450
2 / 6 * 450 : 1 / 6 * 450
Rs.225, Rs.150, Rs.75
2nd method
A=1/10; b=1/15 they worked for 5 days the rest of the work is
finished by C in two more days i.e, 5(1/10+1/15) +2(1/c) =1
from this we get c=12
hence c can do a work in 12 and in 1-day c can do 1/12th work
hence c=1/12
if we consider ratios of A: B:C we get 1/0:1/15:1/12
hence from this we get A: B:C=6:4:5
total wages paid is 3000 i.e, 6Z+4Z+5Z=3000
15Z=3000 i.e, Z=200
hence A gets 6Z i.e, 6*200=1200
B gets 4Z i.e, 4*200=800
C gets 5Z i.e, 5*200=1000
54. 12 men can complete a work in 8 days. 16 women can
complete the same work in 12 days. 8 men and 8 women
started working and worked for 6 days. How many more
men are to be added to complete the remaining work in 1
day?
1 man's 1-day work =1/96;
1 woman's 1-day work = 1/192
27 | P a g e
Work done in 6 days=6(8/96 + 8/192) =6 * 18 =34
Remaining work = 1/4
(8 men +8 women)'s 1-day work = 1(8/96 + 8/192) =1/8
Remaining work =1/4 - 1/8 = 1/8
1/96 work is done in 1 day by 1 man
Therefore, 1/8 work will be done in 1 day by 96 * (1/8) =12 men
55. An air conditioner can cool the hall in 40 minutes
while another takes 45 minutes to cool under similar
conditions. If both air conditioners are switched on at
same instance, then how long will it take to cool the room
approximately?
Let the two conditioners be A and B
'A' cools at 40min
'B' at 45min
Together = (a * b) / (a + b)
= (45 * 40) / (45 + 40)
= 45 * 40/85
= 21.1764
= 22 min (approx).
56. A is twice as good a workman as B and is therefore
able to finish a piece of work in 30 days less than B. In
how many days they can complete the whole work working
together?
Ratio of times taken by A and B = 1 : 2.
The time difference is (2 - 1) 1 day while B take 2 days and A
takes 1 day.
If difference of time is 1 day, B takes 2 days.
If difference of time is 30 days, B takes 2 * 30 = 60 days.
So, A takes 30 days to do the work.
A's 1 day's work = 1/30
B's 1 day's work = 1/60
(A + B)'s 1 day's work = 1/30 + 1/60 = 1/20
28 | P a g e
A and B together can do the work in 20 days.
57. A, B,C together can do a piece of work in 10 days. All
the three started working at it together and after 4 days,
A left. Then, B and C together completed the work in 10
more days. In how many days can complete a work alone?
(A+B+C) do 1 work in 10 days.
So (A+B+C)'s 1-day work=1/10 and as they work together for 4
days so work done by them in 4 days=4/10=2/5
Remaining work=1 - 2/5=3/5
(B+C) take 10 more days to complete 3/5 work.
So(B+C)'s 1-day work=3/50
Now A'S 1-day work=(A+B+C)'s 1-day work - (B+C)'s 1 day
work=1/10 - 3/50=1/25
A does 1/25 work in 1 day
Therefore 1 work in 25 days.
58. If 6 men and 8 boys can do a piece of work in 10 days
while 26 men and 48 boys can do the same in 2 days what
is time taken by 15 men and 20 boys?
6 men and 8 boys can do a piece of work in 10 days
26 men and 48 boys can do the same in 2 days
As the work done is equal,
10(6M + 8B) = 2(26M + 48B)
⇒ M = 2B
60M + 80B = 52M + 96B
⇒ B = M/2 ……(1)
⇒ 15M + 10M = 25M
Now Put (1) in 15M + 20B
⇒ (6M + 4M) 10 = 100M
Now, 6M + 8B in 10 days

Then D(25M) = 100M

59. 3 men, 4 women and 6 children can complete a work
in 7 days. A woman does double the work a man does and
a child does half the work a man does. How many women
alone can complete this work in 7 days?
Let 1 woman's 1-day work = W
Then, 1 man's 1-day work = W/2 and 1 child's 1-day work= W/4.
28W/4 = 1/7 ⇒W = 1/49
So, (3W/2 + 4W + + 6W/4) = 1/7
1 woman alone can complete the work in 49 days.
So, to complete the work in 7 days, number of women required =
49/7 = 7.
60. 10 men and 15 women together can complete a work
in 6 days. It takes 100 days for one man alone to complete
the same work. How many days will be required for one
woman alone to complete the same work?
⇒ 60M + 90W = 100M ⇒ 40M = 90W
(10M + 15W) * 6 days = 1M * 100 days
⇒ 4M = 9W.
From the given data,
⇒ 4M can do the same work in 100/4= 25 days.
1M can do the work in 100 days
⇒ 9W can do the same work in 25 days.
⇒ 1W can do the same work in 25 * 9 = 225 days.
Hence, 1 woman can do the same work in 225 days.
61. (W-2) men can do a piece of work in * days and
(W+7) men can do 75% of the same work in (W-10) days.
Then in how many days can (W+10) men finish the work?
(75/100) * (W -2) W = (W + 7) (W -10)
⇒ W2 – 6W – 280 = 0
(¾) * (W2 - 2W) = W2 - 10W + 7W -70
⇒ W = 20 and W = -14
So, the acceptable value is W = 20
30 | P a g e
Therefore, Total work = (W -2) W = 18 * 20 = 360unit
⇒ k = 12 days
Now, 360 = 30 * k (k = no. of days)
Answer is 12 days
62. A works twice as fast as B. If B can complete a work in
18 days independently, the number of days in which A
and B can together finish the work is:
Ratio of rates of working of A and B =2:1. So, ratio of times taken
=1:2
Therefore, A's 1 day's work=1/9
B's 1 day's work=1/18
(A+B)'s 1 day's work= 1/9 + 1/18 = 1/6
so, A and B together can finish the work in 6 days
63. A and B can do a piece of work in 30 days, while B and
C can do the same work in 24 days and C and A in 20 days.
They all work together for 10 days when B and C leave.
How many days more will A take to finish the work?
⇒(A+B+C)'s 1 day's work= 1/16
2(A+B+C)'s 1-day work = 1/30 + 1/24 + 1/20 = 1/8
work done by A, B and C in 10 days=10/16 = 5/8
Remaining work= 3/8
A's 1 day's work= (116−124) =148
Now, 1/48 work is done by A in 1 day.
So, 3/8 work will be done by A in =48 * (3/8) = 18 days

TAP PROBLEMS
1.Two pipes can fill a tank in 6 hours and 8 hours
respectively while a third pipe empties the full tank in 12
hours. If all the three pipes operate simultaneously, in
how much time will the tank be filled?
Hint: If one pipe fills the tank in 'x' hrs, another pipe fills the same
tank in 'y' hrs but the third pipe empties the tank in 'z' hrs and all
of them are opened together, then
1 1 1
The net part filled in 1hr = + –
x y z
From the given data, net part filled in 1 hour = 1/6 + 1/8 -1/12 =
5/24
So, total time to fill the tank with all pipes open = 24/5 hrs
2.An electric pump can fill a tank in 4 hours. Due to
leakage in the tank, it took 5 hrs to fill the tank. If the
tank is full, how much time will the leak take to empty the
full tank?
32 | P a g e
Let, the time taken by the leak to empty the filled tank be t hours.
Also, assume the whole tank volume to be 1 unit.
Now, the pump takes 4hours to fill 1unit.
So, the pump takes 1 hour to fill 1/4 unit.
Similarly, the leak takes t hours to empty 1 unit.
So, the leak takes 1hour to empty 1/t unit.
So, when the pump fills as well as the leak empties, in 1
hour, 1/4−1/t unit is filled.
In 5 hours, 5×(1/4−1/t)5×(1/4−1/t) unit is filled.
But, according to the question, it takes 5 hours to fill the tank,
∴5×(1/4−1/t)=1∴5×(1/4−1/t)=1
i.e. 1 unit.
⇒1/4−1/t=15⇒1/4−1/t=1/5
⇒1/t=1/4−1/5=5−4/20=1/20⇒1/t=1//4−1/5=5−4/20=1/20
⇒t=20⇒t=20
∴∴ Time taken by the leak to empty the tank when it is completely
full, is 20 hours. (Answer)
3.Two pipes fills a cistern in 15 hrs and 16 hrs
respectively. The pipes are opened simultaneously and it
is observed that it took 26 min more to fill the cistern
because of leakage at the bottom. If the cistern is full,
then in what time will the leak empty it?
Efficiency of pipe A = 1/14
Efficiency of pipe B = 1/16
Efficiency of leakage C = - 1/n
Combined efficiency of pipe A and B = 1/14 + 1/16 = 15/112
The two pipes can fill the cistern in 112/15 hrs
When the leakage is allowed the time to fill the cistern = 112/15
+ 32/60 = 480/60 = 8 hrs
Therefore
1/14 + 1/16 - 1/n = 1/8
1/n = 15/112 - 1/8 = 1/112
The leakage can empty the cistern in 112 hrs Ans

4.If two pipes function simultaneously, the reservoir will
be filled in 24 hrs. One pipe fills the reservoir 20 hours
faster than the other. How many hours does it take for the
second pipe to fill the reservoir?
Assume that the reservoir is filled by first pipe in 'x' hours.
So, the reservoir is filled by second pipe in 'x + 20' hours.
Now, from these above conditions, we can form the equations as,
1/x + 1/ (x + 20) = 1/24
[x + 20 + x] / [x(x + 20)] = 1/24
x2 – 28x – 480 = 0
By solving this quadratic equation , the factors (x – 40) (x+12) =
0
Hence, we get two values : x = 40 & x = -6
Since filling of reservoir is positive work , we can neglect the
negative value of 'x'.
Thus, x = 40.This means that the second pipe will take (x+ 20)
hrs = 40 + 20 = 60 hrs to fill the reservoir.
5.Two pipes can fill a tank in 8 hrs & 6 hrs respectively. If
they are opened on alternate hours and if pipe A gets
opened first, then in how many hours, the tank will be
full?
Now,
In 4 hrs they fill : 2 X (7/24) = 7/12
In 6 hrs they fill : 3 X (7/24) = 7/8
After 6 hrs, part left empty = 1/8
Now it is A's turn to open up.
In one hr it fills 1/8 of the tank.
So, the tank will be full in = 6 hrs + 1 hr = 7 hrs
6.It is observed that the pipe A can fill the tank in 15 hrs
and the same tank is filled by pipe B in 20 hrs. The third
pipe C can vacant the tank in 25 hrs. If all the pipes get
34 | P a g e
opened initially and after 10 hrs, the pipe C is closed, then
how long will it take to fill the tank?
Assume that the tank will be full in '10 + x' hrs.
Part filled by pipe A in 1 hr = 1/15
Part filled by pipe B in 1 hr = 1/20
Part emptied by pipe C in 1 hr = 1/ 25
(A+ B)'s part filled in 1 hr = 1/15 + 1/20 = 7 /60
As Pipe C is closed after 10 hours, let us find the part of tank filled
in 10 hrs.
Tank filled in 10 hrs = 10 (part filled by A in 1 hr + part filled by B
in 1 hr– part emptied by C in 1 hr)
= 10 [1/15 + 1/20 – 1/25] = 23 /30
Remaining part = 1 – part filled in 10 hours
= 1 – 23/30 = 7/30
7.Two pipes A & B can fill a tank in 5 min & 10 min
respectively. Both the pipes are opened together but after
2 min, pipe A is turned off. What is the total time required
to fill the tank?
Part filled by pipe A in 1min = 1/5 & part filled by B in 1 min =
1/10
After 2 min, part filed by A & B together = 2 [ 1/5 + 1/10] = 3/5
Remaining part = 1 – 3/5 = 2/5
Part filled by pipe B in 1 min = 1/10
8.Two taps A and B can fill a tank in 10 hours and 15 hours
and 15 hours respectively. If both the taps are opened
together, the tank will be full in ?
Time taken by A = 10 hours
Time taken by B = 15 hours
=1/10 + 1/15
=(3 + 2)/30
= 5/30
=1/6
= 6 hours.

9.To fill a cistern, pipes A, B and C take 20 minutes, 15
minute and 12 minutes respectively. The time in minutes
that the three pipes together will take to fill the cistern is:
A can do a piece of work in x minutes
B can do a piece of work in y minutes
C can do a piece of work in z minutes
Minute’s work of each of the three is 1/x +1/y + 1/z
1 minute’s work of each of the three pipes
= 1/20 + 1/15 + 1/12
= 1/5
= 5 minutes
10.Two pipes can fill a tank in 10 hours and 12 hours resp.
while third pipe empties the full tank in 20 hours. If all the
three pipes operate simultaneously, in how much time the
tank will be filled?
Pipe A can fill a tank in x hours and pipe B can fill a tank in y
hours and pipe C can empty it in z hours. If all the pipes are
operating simultaneously,
1 hours of work of each of the three pipes = 1/x +1/y - 1/z
1 minute’s work of each of the three pipes
= 1/10 + 1/12 - 1/20
= (6 + 5 - 3)/60 = 8/60 = 2/15
= 15/2 hours = 7 ½ hour
= 7 hours 30 minutes.
