PSA Assignment 2

The document is an assignment for a Power System Analysis course, detailing various questions related to Zbus matrix calculations, fault current analysis in power systems, and the application of Thevenin’s theorem. It includes specific scenarios involving three-phase faults, synchronous generators, and the derivation of current relations in fault conditions. Additionally, it requires MATLAB code for calculations and provides parameters for fault current determination in different fault types.

Power System Analysis 25ME ELP

Assignment 01 05 Marks Date of submission: 21-05-2025

Q.No. 01
Find Zbus matrix of the system shown in figure 1 and 2. Also write a MATLAB code.

Figure 2

Q.No. 02(a)
One line diagram of a simple four bus power system is shown in Figure. Each generator is
represented by an EMF behind sub-transient reactance. All impedances are expressed in per unit
on a common MVA base. All resistances and shunt capacitances are neglected. Generators are
operating on no load at their rated voltage with their EMFs in phase. Using Thevenin’s theorem
calculate per unit fault current when
(a) A bolted three phase fault occurs at bus 4
(b) A three phase fault occurs at bus 2 with a fault impedance of j0.0225 p.u.

Q.No. 02(b)
A synchronous generator is connected to a synchronous motor through a transformer. Reduced to
same base sub-transient reactances of the generator and motor are 0.15 and 0.35 respectively and
the leakage reactance of the transformer is 0.1. A three phase fault occurs at the terminals of motor
when the terminal voltage of generator is 0.9 per unit and output current of generator is 1.0 per
unit at 0.8 power factor leading. Use terminal voltage of generator as reference voltage and find
per unit sub-transient current in fault, generator and motor by calculating EMF behind the
subtransient reactance method.

Q.No. 03(a)
A solidly grounded unloaded energized generator develops a line to line fault involving phases b
and c at its terminals. Its positive, negative and zero sequence reactances are given as X 1, X2 and
X0 respectively and resistances are ignored. Derive a relation to calculate positive sequence
component of current in phase “a”.

Q.No. 03(b)
A generator having a solidly grounded neutral and rated 50-MVA, 30-kV has positive, negative
and zero-sequence reactances of 25, 15, and 5 percent, respectively.
(a) Find the fault current in p.u. and in Amperes for a solid three phase fault
(b) Find the fault current in p.u. and in Amperes for a bolted single line to ground fault
(c) What reactance must be placed in the generator neutral to limit the fault current for a bolted
line-to-ground fault to that for a bolted three-phase fault?
(d) Find the fault current in p.u. and in Amperes for a line to line fault
