1. Parts of a Computer
A computer has two main types of parts: hardware and software.
a. Hardware – These are the physical parts you can touch. Examples include:
- Monitor – Displays what you see on the screen.
- Keyboard – Used for typing data into the computer.
- Mouse – Helps you control and select things on the screen.
- System Unit (CPU) – The main box that holds the brain of the computer. Inside it, you’ll
find:
• Processor (CPU) – Does all the thinking and processing.
• RAM (Memory) – Helps the computer work faster while it's on.
• Hard Drive – Stores files, software, and data.
- Other Devices – Like printer, speakers, webcam, etc.
b. Software – These are the programs and instructions that run the computer. Examples:
- Operating System (e.g. Windows) – Manages the computer and its tasks.
- Application Software – Like Word, Excel, and web browsers.
2. Functions of a Computer
Computers perform four basic functions:
1. Input – Receiving data (e.g. typing with a keyboard).
2. Processing – Working on the data using the CPU.
3. Storage – Saving the data for future use.
4. Output – Showing the result (on a screen or through a printer).
3. Uses of a Computer
Computers are used in many areas of life, such as:
- Education – For learning, research, and online classes.
- Healthcare – Managing patient records and running medical equipment.
- Business – Sending emails, preparing documents, and storing data.
- Communication – Through emails, social media, and video calls.
- Entertainment – Watching videos, playing music or games.
- Banking – Checking balances, using ATMs, and online banking.
4. Importance of Computers
Computers are important because:
- They help us work faster and more accurately.
- They store a large amount of information safely.
- They make communication easier and faster.
- They are used in almost every field today.
- They help people access information and learn new things.
