`` Two Kinds `` By Amy Tan And The Rocking Horse Winner Essay
The Cusp of Success
A common theme we see in the two stories, Two Kinds by Amy Tan, and The Rocking Horse
Winner by D.H Lawrence is the detrimental effects that a forcing a bar of success can have on
developing adolescents. Recognizing that the product of success is generally good, clouds the
notion that there is in fact a wide range of effects that chasing success can bring about. Some of
these effects have positive repercussions, teaching adolescents discipline and work ethic. However,
some of the effects are quite negative, especially in those that are too young to truly care for
themselves. Forcing a cusp of success on adolescents indirectly in The Rocking Horse Winner or
directly in Two Kinds pushes the children to achieve the impossible resulting in a breaking point in
the adolescent characters. Paul is infatuated with luck for after being convinced that luck is the bane
of his father and family he feels as if he is responsible for maintaining his family s happiness with
the success that his luck brings. Whispers that creep through his house are whispers of depression
and doubt that plague Paul driving him forwards thus he states, I started it for mother. She said she
had no luck, because father is unlucky, so I thought if I was lucky, it might stop the whispering
(Lawrence 8). Paul finds himself encumbered with the burden of maintaining a family s happiness.
As an adolescent hoping to please his mother Paul must push himself past the limit of the
Why I Am I At The University Of Iowa
Introduction
Who is Chad Richmond? Why am I in the field of student affairs? Why am I at the University of
Iowa? These are questions that I have to ask myself everyday and I typically answers them a
different way every time. It has been a long journey for me to get where I am today and this paper
will discuss those aspects that have both helped and even hindered my path at times. Many
different people, events, goals and problems have helped shaped who I am today, but they are all
important to who I am today. I can be generically labeled relatively easily but those labels don t
always tell the really story. I am a son, brother, uncle, student, college graduate, educator, employee
and friend. I am also someone who thought college was out of reach and never would guessed I
would be in graduate school now. I am also very competitive and strive to excel in everything
including both inside and outside of the classroom. My journey to graduate school will be discussed
below and hopefully show how I ended up at the University of Iowa.
The Path to Graduate School As stated above, I didn t always think that college was in my future
after high school. I was a wrestler for most of my life and I thought the only way that I was going
to college was to receive a scholarship for athletics. My senior year I was being recruited to wrestle
at four Big Ten universities and thought it was my ticket to college. During a practice at the end of
the season, I was wrestling and tore my meniscus

hardships and Truth even escaped the bondage from slavery. After that she spoke out for women s
rights and was even the first African American woman to take a white man to court and win.
Throughout her eighty six years of life Sojourner Truthshe stumbled through numerous hardships,
escaped slavery, and spoke out on women s rights. First, Truth was a slave for most of her life.In
earlier years Truth was sold along with a flock of sheep for 100 dollars. Truth was also separated
from her family, and sold to a man named John Neely, who Truth remembered to be violent and
harsh. Truth also fell in love with a man named Robert from a farm nearby.
The Protagonists In Borderline
How are the protagonists different at the end of the novel from the beginning? In Borderline,
Sami Sabiri is very cowardly and spineless in the beginning; he allows his bullies to walk all over
him and he does not have the courage to speak up for himself: Your cowardice speaks to your
character, Sabiri. (105) He is constantly running away from his problems, even though he knows it
will not solve anything: Life can be tough, Sami. But hiding only makes things worse. In the end,
no matter how hard you try, you can t hide from yourself. Trust me. (101) He miserably makes his
way through each day, and he can even be seen as clueless when it comes to his goals. When things
turn sour and his dad gets arrested, he finally begins taking initiative.

Social Commentary in Hollywood War Films
Hollywood film is a powerful twentieth century art form that has provided entertainment and social
commentary since its creation. Film can be used to portray history on the silver screen. Directors
can use their films to portray social commentary about current issues. A popular social issue
throughout history is war. Directors can use their war films to promote pro war or anti war
movements. Films have the ability to influence the public and provoke thought amongst them about
any social issue. The power of film has the ability to present the audience with history while
providing social commentary.
Nearly one third of Hollywood movies touch on history and one of the many historical events
being war. The Civil War was the first embraced war by Hollywood. It was the first war
photographed therefore, Hollywood knew what people and events looked like. At the time Civil
War movies were produced by Hollywood there were still living relatives of those who were in the
Civil War. There were not as many World War Ifilms as other wars. These films were used to jazz
up the public for World War II like Sergeant York or as an anti war film like Paths of Glory. World
War II films on the other hand were Hollywood s most filmed war. These films were mostly
patriotic, as America was fighting for its future, with some slightly cynical. Hollywood saw a
shifting tone with the Korean War

Russi An Extraordinary Outburst Of Social And Cultural Change
Russia has been around for a long time and has evolved over the years. Their ability to adapt to
their environment as a country and, essentially, become a powerhouse in the world, is a great feat
in itself. Over time Russia developed their social climate, economic system, military power and
efficiency, as well as infrastructure. Today, I will be discussing how their military, political views,
economics, social views, infrastructure and physical environment all relate together and has
enhanced Russia s ability to stay a powerhouse. Russia has been around since 800 b.c. and has
seen the rise and fall of many bad leaders as well as the rise and fall of many different good
political leaders ( A brief history of Russia , 2005). Since the Soviet era, Russia has had an
extraordinary outburst of social and cultural change ( A brief history of Russia , 2005). Russia
developed radical styles of constructivism, futurism, and supremacism during this time. In 1924,
there was a struggle for power in the Communism party after Lenin s death ( A brief history of
Russia , 2005). During the latter half of the decade, a victor emerged and that was Stalin. He
immediately dictated the way agricultural lands were collectivized, creating large, state run farms.
Industrial development was pushed along at breakneck speed, and production was almost entirely
diverted from consumer products to capital equipment. Stalin repressed religion, closing churches,
destroying them and converting
The Achievements Of Isaac Newton
Throughout History, there have been many decorated and brilliant minds that have contributed to
shaping the scientific life that we live in today. One of the most influential scientists would be that of
Sir Isaac Newton. Newton was a prominent philosopher, astronomer, mathematician, physicist, and
scientist during the 17th century. The accomplishments completed within his life helped in
contributing and shaping the fact that he was one of the single most influential scientists of his time.
On January 4, 1643, Isaac Newton was born in the Woolsthorpe, Lincolnshire, England colony. His
birth date, using the old Julien calendar, is also shown to be on December 25, 1642. Filled with
many hardships and trials, Isaac Newton lived a troubling early life. Named after his father, Isaac
Newton, Sr., Newton grew up as an only child. Unfortunately, Isaac Newton, Sr., passed away three
months before his son was born. After the passing of his father, Newton s mother, Hannah
Ayscough Newton, decided to get remarried to a minister and soon left her three year old son
behind to live with his maternal grandmother. It has been noted that this experience may have left a
critical sense of insecurity of Newton s life. It wasn t until age 12 that Newton reunited with his
mother after the death of her second husband. It was during this time when Newton had begun to
attend school in which he was introduced and fascinated with the world of chemistry. He was soon
pulled out of school by his mother,
Comparing Napoleon s Rise To Power In Animal Farm And...
How do dictators gain control of their people? How are they able to rise into power and place the
fate of their nations into their own greedy hands? How are they able to devastate the lands they call
home and feel no sense of remorse for it? According to Jan Masaryk, Dictators are rulers who always
look good until the last ten minutes. While this is not literally true, both Napoleon, an animal
character from Animal Farm, and ex Haitian dictatorJean Claude Duvalier are dissimilar in the way
that they rise to power and in the laws they impose, but are alike because they appear to be great
leaders until years of tyranny ultimately reveal their true characters. Napoleon s rise to power is
steady and unhurried. He first gains power when Old Major dies and Napoleon and Snowball, being
the cleverest animals, naturally assume leadership over the other... Show more content on

Napoleon s laws and policies are often meant to repress the animals and keep them silent,
malleable, and unable to assemble. He announced that from now on the Sunday morning
Meetings would come to an end (Orwell 49). He decrees that Beasts of England has been
abolished and is no longer allowed to be sung (Orwell 78). At the end of the novel, after the Seven
Commandments have been changed so drastically that they are no longer recognizable, only one
commandment remains. All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others
(Orwell 118). Ironically, the true meaning of this statement is that all animals are not equal and
that the pigs view themselves as better in every way. Duvalier s laws and policies were not quite
as oppressive. He launched reforestation campaigns as well as supported quickie divorce laws,
which helped spark a tourism boom (Hanes 6). Duvalier also opened up the country to foreign
business a economic liberalization policy he eventually dubbed Jeanclaudism (Hanes
