Lincoln s Assassination Speech Analysis
Eight presidents have died in office of the United States of America. Four of those eight have been
assassinated. President Abraham Lincoln was the first to be assassinated. Lincoln s assassination
threw the nation into depression and a hunt to find the assassin. Lincoln s last speech was his
inaugural address to his second term in office, March 4, 1865.Many people were there that rainy
day to see him take the oath. One of the many was John Wilkes Booth, a confederate sympathizer
with wit and charm that could make any woman swoon. His good looks made him a famous actor.
His fiancee, Lucy Hale, is next to him. Her father, U.S. Senator John Parker Hale, does not know of
their engagement, for he would not approve of the actor. Booth... Show more content on

Seward s slave, William Bell, answers the door at Powell s knock, said that no one is to disturb
Seward. But Powell is persistent in saying that he has medicine for him that he must deliver
personally. Bell gives in and leads him up the stairs. Upon hearing heavy footsteps, Sewards
eldest son, Augustus, comes out into the hall and stops Powell. Powell argues that he must
deliver it. Augustus has none of it and reaches for the medicine. But Powell pulls away, and beats
Augustus senseless with his gun, breaking it in the process. Bell runs into the street screaming
murder. Herold sees this and rides away, leaving Powell s horse. In the house, Powell is fighting
his way into Seward s bedroom. Private Robertson, an assigned military nurse, tries to stop him
but is no match for Powell. They fight, but Powell subdues him with his knife. Seward s daughter,
Francis, stands between him and the attacker, pleading him to stop. He punches her in the face,
and she slumps to the floor. Powell stands over Seward now stabbing, at him. A jaw splint worn
by Seward helped to save his life by deflecting the knife away from his jugular vein. Powell, now
in a hurry, leaves him out cold. Frederick, the second oldest, and Robertson try to block his escape
but ends up unconscious. Powell makes a mad dash outside but only finds a horse. He mounts his
ride and gallops into the
Frankenstein Personal Response
1.) Initially, my first impression of this excerpt was unique. I felt as though I have read similar
situations in other novels, however, the author describes the environment unlike any other. First, I
wondered what the aliens were planning, and what effect it would have on humanity. Similarly, the
characters in the book behaved the same way, some trying to communicate with the aliens, and
others just wondering about them. It felt as though we were all moths flying around a bug zapper,
too mystified to realize the immediate danger posed by the aliens. Only when it was too late, did the
main character break out of his trance and escape.
2.) The genre of this selection is science fiction, however, the excerpt I read could be classified as a
short story. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
First, the author provides exposition, seen in the first three paragraphs. Second, rising action occurs
as the main character watches as a strange flame emerges in the alien craft. After this, the climax
transpires, and the surrounding pedestrians are engulfed in this strange flame. Unwinding, the falling
action ensues, as the main character watches in bewilderment as the alien ship destroys everything
besides him. Concluding, the denouement befalls, as the main character finally flees.
4.) During this excerpt, the protagonist s name is unknown, however, he is the character in which
the story is told. Opposing him, is this strange alien craft which is the antagonist.
5.) The most important traits of the main character are his bravery, curiosity, and humanity. He
displays each of these when he approaches the alien craft, wondering what it is, he asks others
around him. Without these three traits, the narrative would be very different, as he likely would have
fled much quickly.
6.) Only one setting in seen in this work. That setting is the heather filled area the main character
finds himself in. Other than the heather, the alien craft stands behind some sand dunes. No other
setting is shown in this work, as the main character doesn t describe any other. Although it is made
apparent there are towns nearby, they are not seen in the

The Relation Between the Setting And the Character In The Yellow Wallpaper and Big Two Hearted
River

The aim of this paper is to analyze the importance and relation of the setting and characters in the
two short stories: The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman and Ernest Hemingway s Big
Two Hearted River .

The setting in The Yellow Wallpaper helps illustrate the theme of solitary confinement and exclusion
from the public resulting in insanity. The house rented by the characters for the summer as well as
the surrounding scenery suggest an isolated environment. Because of its vast colonial mansion look,
its age and state of degradation, a supernatural hypothesis is implied: the ... Show more content on

This will be Nick s last contact with civilization as he immerses himself in the natural world. The
most significant feature of the setting is the river, clear and smoothly fast in the early morning . It
symbolizes spiritual renewal for Nick, his escape from suffering and the troubled world. Another
important part of the setting are grasshoppers which have turned black, and thus have the same
colour as the burnt land. Their accommodation may indicate Nick s adjustment to the present
situation. The setting also consists of the dark swamp which is forbidding, not to be faced at the
moment, as the fishing there is tragic .

Jane, the protagonist of The Yellow Wallpaper , dominated by her husband, suffers from a
nervous disorder which is enhanced by her feeling of being trapped within the room. She finds a
way of escaping from the uncomfortable reality by writing the journal in which she analyzes the
wallpaper, but also herself and her illness subconsciously. A strange, provoking, formless sort of
figure that seems to skulk about behind that silly and conspicuous front design of the yellow
wallpaper gradually becomes the projection of her imagination. Jane finally recognizes the fact that
the woman she sees behind the wallpaper is really her own frame of mind. She believes that she has

Cura Personalis
One of the most unique aspects of Georgetown University is its emphasis on Cura Personalis , which
means Care of the Whole Person. The University appreciates its diverse student body and respects
the unique gifts that students bring to the community. Its individualized attention to the needs of
every student deeply reflects its commitment to the schools Jesuit traditions. I have always
envisioned college as a place where students seek to cultivate their mind, body, and spirit
interactively. By taking the holistic approach to learning, students strive to become lifelong thinkers
who reflect, analyze and question themselves and the world around them. The idea of Cura

Located in our nation s capital, Washington DC, Georgetown expands resources beyond the campus
for its students. In addition to the easily accessible resources in the Library of Congress, the Folger
Shakespeare Library, and the Smithsonian, Georgetown provides its students with extensive
community outreach in the Washington DC area. One particular opportunity that caught my
attention is the Community Based Learning, in which students work with nonprofit organizations
such as Jumpstart and Ward 7 Initiative. Similar to the Jesuit identity, I recognize the importance of
service learning because it allows students to step out of the traditional classroom and learn through
real life experiences. Furthermore, students can see how their influences benefit the society and are,
at the same time, beneficial to themselves.
In order to broaden the intellectual scope of students, the Office of Global Education offers various
study abroad programs that promote international learning experience. As a student who desires to
be proficient in Spanish, I am very interested in study abroad programs in Spain and other Spanish
speaking countries. Studying abroad would allow me to infuse myself in a different environment
that stimulates language learning on a daily basis. It also increases job opportunities for me due to
the usefulness of Spanish in the work
The Ethics Of DNA Testing And Ethical Dilemmas
As time goes on civilizations find innovations to make living a little bit easier. However, new
frontiers often bring struggles. In Flackelmann s articles on The Ethics of DNA Testing four
situations are given and later followed by a comprehensive analysis by both the public and by
experts in ethics, law, geneticsand any other various fields that correlate with the cases scenarios.
The first scenario (titled A Case of Dwarfism ) describes the story of a couple who are carrying the
gene for achondroplasia, meaning they both are dwarfs. The counselor tells the parents that through
genetic testing they can find out whether or not the child will have dwarfism as well. The couple
has made 3 decisions; the first being that if the child has... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I think in an advancing society it is necessary but, with limitations. A person has a right to know
about their future children and is entitled to avoid anything they may consider to be too troubling to
handle; however, patients should be made aware that the results may be negative or defamatory. But,
access to this kind of information requires a serious amount of sensitivity and the person handling it
should be aware of this and understand that the only ethics that have entitlement in this situation are
the subjects . I think it s all very delicate and subjective. There should be many considerations when
having a child or dealing with one s genetics but, the most important one is quality of life. As long as
the ethics support that they are not only beneficial but,
Creon Abuse Of Power
Abuse of Power Millions of people around the world have power, but they do not always use their
power for the right reasons. Some people in a position of power abuse their power. When a
person abuses their power they inflict fear and violence on others, which has a negative effect. One
of the many ways power can negatively affect others is through fear. Even respectable leaders can
abuse their power to cause fear. For example, Creon, the King of Thebes, uses his power to inflict
fear on the town. Creon keeps the townspeople from burying Antigone s brother. Creon threatens to
kill whoever buries him, which causes fear throughout the town. This fear keeps Antigone s brother
from being buried, which goes against her family s beliefs and traditions.
Quests In Beowulf
In Heaney s Beowulf, Beowulf is an epic hero because he is on a journey to find self knowledge.
To begin with, quests are a multi step process; and in order for Beowulf to become an epic hero, he
must follow the main structure of a quester. In Foster s How to Read Literature Like a Professor: A
Lively and Entertaining Guide to Reading Between the Lines he states, The quest consists of five
things: a quester, a place to go, a stated reason to go, challenges and trials en route, and a real reason
to go there (Foster 3). Quests are no simple matter, and in order for a hero to be considered epic, they
must pass the series of different characteristics. First of all, an epic hero must be someone who
does something outside of his daily routine. Foster states, A quester is just a person who goes on
a quest, whether or not he knows it s a quest (3). The epic hero must be exceptional, there must be
something remarkable about him. In the same way, an epic hero should be leaving somewhere to
do something. Foster also says, A place to go and a stated reason to go there should be considered
together: someone tells our protagonist, our hero, to go somewhere and do something (Foster 3).
The hero must venture out of the comfort of his home for him to be considered epic, that way he
is not selfish in what he is accomplishing. The hero must also have some reason to go on this
journey, some threat or mission he must fulfill. Adding to that, challenges must be overcame for
your hero to be considered epic. Foster quotes, A knight, a dangerous road, a Holy Grail, at least
one dragon, one evil knight, one princess (2). Whatever challenges he may face, he must face
them for the betterment of humanity. And finally, an epic hero must be on this journey not just
because it is necessary, but because he is trying to find something along the way. Foster notes, The
real reason for a quest never involves the stated reason (3). The quester is not going on this
journey simply because he is asked to, there must be some reason pushing them to make these
decisions. Foster s description of a quester proves that epic heroes must be on a quest for glory and
self knowledge.
Along with that, The story of Beowulf shows that he is, in fact, a
Negotiations in India
Introduction

The Negotiable Instruments Act was enacted, in India, in 1881. Prior to its enactment, the
provision of the English Negotiable Instrument Act were applicable in India, and the present Act is
also based on the English Act with certain modifications. It extends to the whole of India except

Evolutionary Biology Essay
Evolutionary Biology:
Global Warming Negatively Affecting Ecosystem s and Organisms Within
Daret Mckay
Sydenham High School

By looking at the evolution of the Earth s climate, we can see that climate change is occurring but
more specifically, global warming. Climate change is occurring as a result of the green house affect,
meaning that sunlight s energy and heat is being trapped within the Earth s atmosphere and
furthermore warms the surface of Earth (NASA, n.d.). Evolutionary biology is described to be
genetic inheritance (or change) within a population from generation to generation (Understanding
Evolution, 2015). By examining the evolutionary biology of ecosystems and the organisms within it,
we will see that global ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Climate change is altering the pattern of life on the planet, causing widespread species
extinction, migration and behavior changes (Suzuki, n.d.). For example, female caribou migrate
in the spring to small pockets of vegetation where they feed and raise there calves, but for the last
decade spring has come so early that by the time the caribou reach the coastal plan, their principle
of food plant has already gone to seed (Suzuki, n.d.). This proves that the female caribou are going
to have to change breeding time frames, as well as migration, which will have an overall affect
on the ecosystem. This also means that animals and plants will have to permanently migrate to
find suitable habitats but some will not be able to move fast enough to keep up with the pace of
climate change (Suzuki, n.d.). In fact, by saying that it means that some species will have to
move 10 times faster than they did during the last ice age just to survive. Over 30% of land
surfaces in Canada will require unrealistically high migration rates to keep up with projected
climate change (Suzuki, n.d.). Another example of this issue is with Collared Lemmings. They are
an important prey for snowy owls, which may lose as much as 60% of their habitat. Loss of tundra
habitat could radically reduce the availability of vital breeding habitat for millions of geese and
shore birds (Suzuki, n.d.). In general ecosystems are being destroyed due to
Social Classes In The Leopard
A major part of society, ranging from the beginning of time until present day, has been the aspect of
social classes and the distinguishing features between the different levels. In Giuseppe Di
Lampedusa s novel The Leopard, through the use of different characters to symbolize the different
social classes and the relationships between them, the author successfully distinguished and defined
the different groups in nineteenth century Italian society. A special spotlight is shown on the
aristocracy as that is the class the main character, Prince Fabrizio, belongs to. It is seen through the
novel quite clearly the distinction between the different social classes, the relationships between
them, and why characters in the different classes behave as they do. The characters in this book
that are members of the aristocracy are also a part of the royal, or now ex royal, Salinas family.
Prince Fabrizio and his wife Princess Stella were born into this life of luxury. They even brought
in a few children, Concetta and Paolo. Prince Fabrizio is an extremely dynamic character. He is
used to being rich just because he was born rich and is not interested in working hard for what he
has. He was presented with a job to work for the new Italian government but turned it down and
recommended Don Calogero because of what seemed to be a lack of motivation to actually have to
work in order to earn money. Fabrizio is described to be quick tempered and that is proven when he
gets upset in the garden
Television In the Lives of Children Essay
Television In The Lives Of Children
Consistently, everywhere, in this century there seems to be some form of a TV screen. These
screens appear in restaurants, schools, at work, at home, and quite possibly more. What is forgotten
in society is how that screen may affect the lives of the children in this modern world. When children
are constantly watching a television screen there may be consequences to their health and education.
Most parents do not have the ability to control what is shown on TV. Many programs disagreeably
display marathons after school and during holidays. Supposedly, adult shows are only showed late at
night, but with movies becoming more and more explicit, even bed time can t stop the most
determined child. Children s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Violence on the television can also be affecting children s health. Injuries are the leading cause of
death in children, and watching unsafe behavior on TV may increase children s risk taking behavior.
(Boyse Online). So, when watching Americas Funniest Home Videos make sure to monitor every
minor in the house (that may be their next idea of a fun game).
Violence on television can also be damaging to a child s reaction to the world Kids who view
violent acts are more likely to show aggressive behavior but also fear that the world is scary and
that something bad will happen to them. (Gavin Online). When young children see these explicit
scenes of violence on screen at that age, most cannot tell the difference from reality so, in the
child s mind these bad thing could befall them. Violence occurs so much on shows and movies,
some violent acts that happen in life are unnoticed The average American child will witness
200,000 violent acts on television by age 18. Kids may become desensitized to violence and more
aggressive. (Gavin Online). It s important to teach the kids between right and wrong, but this
becomes difficult when children are constantly surrounded by television, Even though kids are
taught by their parents that it s not right to hit, television says it s OK to bite, hit, or kick if you re
the good guy. This can lead to confusion when kids try to understand the difference
Lekythos Essays
The Lekythos

A lekythos is an ancient Greek vase made of ceramic; the plural of lekythos is lekythoi (Reference
#2). It has a narrow neck, single handle, and is tall with a small, deep mouth (Reference #7). The
lekythos was used as a flask, used to hold olive oil and perfumes (Reference #1), and were
developed in ancient Athens during the fifth century. In Classical Athens, lekythoi were painted in
white ground with figurative scenes. White ground is a form of art used by Athenians in which they
created the vase, fired it, and then the lekythos was painted in white. The figures and scenes were
then painted on top of the white ground. This method meant that the paintings did not last as well,
but were very beautiful in their original ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Secondly, some lekythoi were filled with scented oils and perfumes and placed around the body,
while others were set along the approach to the grave or placed beside the tomb (Reference #5).
This was done as a part of the religious focus of the burial ceremony, and was given as an offering.
Lastly, a lekythos would often be brought to the gravesite or tomb of the deceased after the burial.
It was very important to ancient Greeks to visit the gravesite of loved ones quite often, and when
they visited, they would bring offerings to the deceased such as fruit, a feast, or a lekythos filled
with olive oil or perfume (Reference #6).
In time, the Lekythos was developed into a much larger version of itself, being called Huge
Lekythoi . These were often left on top of a grave, or beside a tomb opening, almost as an ancient
grave marker (Reference #7). Though they would not be inscribed with any words or the name of
the deceased, they would have a painted scene depicting the deceased, some scene from their life,
or a scene depicting a sport or activity the deceased greatly enjoyed. Many lekythoi have been
recovered and are currently housed in museums all over the world. Though many are not in their
original glory, most have been reconstructed. New lekythoi have been made in Greece and are still
used today in some small Greek communities during the preparation of the body, and left by
Lilo And Stitch Character Analysis
Lilo and Stitch Lilo s ordinary world is in Hawaii and stitch s ordinary world is that he was made

used Campbell s technique to give a better understanding of the story not only for kids. This
justifies that hero s are not always followed by very godly like leaders. The proof of Lilo and
stitch being created based on the mono myths helped show that the Hero s journey is ambiguous.

U.s. Foreign Policy Decisions
everyone, not only because of threats of terrorist attacks or the danger of war, but for far more
mundane reasons. (Kaufman pg. 3). Here Kaufman begins to unravel the differences between these
two types of foreign policy. The extraordinary are the issues surrounding war, terrorist attacks,
cyber warfare. The mundane, is as simple as the labels on your clothing, but as complex as who is
allowed entry into the U.S.. These topics do not elicit as much of a reaction, because as Kaufman
argues the foreign policydecisions that most people know about and follow closely are those that are
extraordinary because the stakes appear to be so high. (Kaufman pg. 3). Although there appears to
be strong evidence suggesting the importance of foreign policy, that is not reflected in American
culture.
As noted above, this is strongly related to the perceived value of the issues. In today s world we
have more access to information than we have ever had in the history of the world. One would
think this would lead to a more informed and educated public. While this could be the case in
some areas of study, it is not the case in foreign policy. Mead addresses some of Americans views
and the role they play throughout history. He makes several strong and persuasive declarations
about American foreign policy stating one of the most remarkable features of contemporary U.S.
foreign policy is the ignorance of and contempt for the country s own foreign policy he goes on to
