Causality Of The Ph. D Program
When students join a Ph.D. program they soon become members of a discourse community, which
is a group of members that share the same values, goals, and lexis. Especially in the science
disciplines the students become immersed in their group by exploring various research projects and
conducting experiments that will hopefully propel their scientific curiosity exponentially before they
graduate. The students are also not alone in this journey as they are under the tutelage and
mentorship of an academic advisor. However, the relationship that exists between the two
communities is one that is often embedded with feelings of tension and turmoil. Often this tension
frequently results in many students leaving the lab before they graduate and... Show more content on

Additionally, they indicated that the feelings of discontent they held for the lab stemmed from their
PI (Mays). The students explained that they function daily in a community of approximately 10 12
members, and they all collectively report to the PI of the lab. Furthermore, grad student Smith
explained that the PI presents himself as having great power over the students as he stated, I think he
wants us to believe he is this omnipotent figure. Grad student Mays explained that when new
students are accepted into the program they enter into a group of their peers that range in experience
levels from apprentice to more advanced by the time they are reaching the end of the academic
tenure. However, as each new student joins the group every fall they are not formally admitted into
their lifestyle, but are instead unfortunately left to their own devices to interpret and understand the
functions and guidelines of the lab (Smith). It is a process author Susan Gardner a researcher who
studied the socialization process of grad students explained that this period can be categorized into
the [i]nformal stage...in which the novice learns of the informal role expectations transmitted by
interactions with others who are current incumbents (728). Furthermore, she adds that it is through
socialization that can afford each student the ability to be successful in
Mid-Term Break
Mid Term Break Seamus Heaney On my first Sonne Ben Jonson Which poem expresses the
experience of grief best?
On my first Sonne is a very direct way of expressing the grief that occurs when a child in the family
dies. It is about the feelings that
Ben Jonson goes through, and the poem describes his emotions and thoughts in detail. On the other
hand, Mid Term Break uses indirect ways to portray grief, by describing events that happen after the
death. Farewell, thou child . On my first Sonne openly addresses the deceased boy in the poem. The
poem is to him, and about him. Ben
Jonson uses faith to help him through the bereavement. Biblical phrases ( child of my right hand ,
my sinne was and all his vowes )

Mid term break is overall more subtle in its approaches to express grief. It describes the events
surrounding the death, not the emotions the poet went through. Grief is also brought out through
the choice of words; for example knelling . Knell is a word used to describe the ringing of death
bells, but not school bells.
The narrative in the first stanza takes a detached and spaced out rhythm. This shows the shock that
has hit the poet, and how he has distanced himself from the tragic event. Through the whole poem,
the rhythm remains slow, revealing how the poet feels unsure and isolated.
as my mother held my hand / in hers and coughed out angry tearless sighs These lines show the
grief, that Seams Heaney cannot express alone, being expressed by his mother for him.
He mentions his father crying in the fourth line because it is so out of the ordinary that he has to
mention it. This in itself shows some of the shock of the event, and how he is frightened by the
change. It was a hard blow has overtones of a heavy impact, as in the accident and as the emotions
that follow.
The corpse is such in line 15 that it is unrecognisable; it is no longer his brother, but a corpse. So
great is the disorientation surrounding being plucked suddenly from school into a surreal
environment, he does not have time to contemplate his brother, and so the corpse remains as an
unnamed, staunched body.

Watership Down Quotes
In the downs of a small farm, two rabbits are preparing to flee their warren in order to escape men
come to kill them. Richard Adam s Watership Down follows these two rabbits Hazel and Fiver as
they gather a following and make their way across the farmland to safety. The band of misfits
looks to Hazel for guidance, and he leads them to their haven: a warren atop the hills where the
rabbits are safe and sound. However, the need to keep the warren going pushes the rabbits to
continue exploring and find does in other warrens. While looking, they meet the Efrafa warren.
This warren is lead by General Woundwort, and immediately the two parties are at odds with one
another. The most noticeable difference is between the leaders of the two warrens: Hazel and
General Woundwort. Both Hazel and General Woundwort are cunning; however, the leaders use
their wits in different ways. Hazel uses his wit for the betterment of his people, while General
Woundwort uses his to control and oppress his people. Some leaders are born into their position,
others rise to the occasion, and a small few seize the position themselves the latter of the three
describe both Hazel and General Woundwort. Their motivation is what separates them. Hazel
takes charge of his warren to protect them, while General Woundwort climbs up the ladder of
power using any means available. In the beginning, Hazel s warren did not have a leader. It was
merely a band of misfit rabbits trying to leave their warren. Hazel proves himself a leader when the
Owsla, or rabbitpolice, come to arrest the rabbits that try to leave. After a fight breaks out, Hazel
steps forward to protect his brothers, Go, said Hazel, firmly and quietly, Or we ll kill you (21).
Hazel believes that if there is no way to get his people out safely, then they will have to go out
fighting. The instinct to protect and fight for his people is how Hazel becomes the leader of his
warren. His brave actions make him becomes the Chief Rabbit of his warren. Hazel did not seek
leadership, he simply led. In contrast to this natural leadership, General Woundwort is more power
hungry and ruthless. He is the tyrant of his warren Efrafa. The narrator tells the story of General
Woundwort and how his
The Elderly are Changing the Face of Health Care Essay
The elderly aged 65 and older are the leading users of healthcare services nationwide. As the older
Americans is an asset to the country, the increasingly aging population is a challenge. In 2050, the
number of Americans aged 65 and older is projected to be 88.5 million, more than double its
projected population of 40.2 million in 2010 (Vincent, and Velcoff). It is important to recognize the
growth of the agingpopulation, with the increasing healthcare costs and health care services that are
in great demand, the health care system is changing and it is a challenge in delivering health care
to the elderly. Providing and financing health care services have factors to help improve care of the

Patient factors include poor adherence, low tolerance of health outcomes and the inability to long
term health outcomes It is the lack of proper dosage, and complicated formularies of the complex
drug (Murray). The benefits must therefore meet health budgets and health safety to help the elderly
in these times and the future. The care of the elderly most importantly comes from their doctors and
physicians to ensure patient safety, giving appropriate dosages and information, and quality care.
Health care organizations must determine the costs that will meet guidelines of quality benefits.
Overall it is the patient or the caregiver who must take responsibility for the patients medication and
reaching better health. Using information technology is another important component to improve
health care.
Information technology can help improve the quality of care to older adults and their caregivers to
better manage their own care. Information technology improves communication between doctors and
patients by accessing Patient Portal, an online tool that offers patients a secure environment to
perform functions like scheduling appointments, requesting refills on medications, looking at lab
results and communicating with their providers in a confidential and secure manner ( What is a
patient portal? ). By providing effective care physicians need computer systems to necessary track

the old year and the new one to come. People make New Years Resolutions each New Years and
promise themselves that they will keep this resolution until next year. New Years Eve is a major
social event. Clubs everywhere are packed with party goers who stay out all night and go nuts at
midnight. At midnight it is a tradition to make lots of noise. The traditional New Years Ball is

every year in the United States to honor all the men and women who served with the U.S. armed
forces during the wars. It is observed either on November 11th or on the fourth Monday of October.

When the Pilgrims landed their ships at Plymouth Rock in the year 1621, they needed the help of
the neighboring Native Americans to learn how to plant crops and grow food. After they had
completed their first harvest, the Pilgrims had a feast with the Indians (Native Americans) to
celebrate their friendships. This was called The First Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is still celebrated
every year on the fourth Thursday of November, usually with a feast of turkey, stuffing, corn, mashed
potatoes and other foods. A favorite
Bohemian Hotel Research Paper
Antonia Cortes Professor Dottie Ivey Humanities 15 July 2015 Bohemian Hotel in Celebration
On July 14, 2015 I made a trip down to Celebration to see the art gallery at the Bohemian Hotel.
Every single time I enter the town of Celebration I fall more in love. Well, today I realized that art
galleries do not need to be big, to be impressive. As I arrive to the hotel I get to take in the
beautiful architectural design of the hotel. Inside I get the pleasure of seeing more than 75
different art pieces. The whole reason I wanted to go to this specific location was, because
someone had told me that there was glasswork throughout the hotel. However, the small yet
impressive art gallery captured my attention more. The hotel had art pieces all over, but I got all
caught up in a corner where local artists, Nina Buxton, Huston Llew, and Phillip Anthony; had
their beautiful pieces of art. Nina Buxton s Cypress Tree II, was very impressive. The painting is
done on a canvas with oil paint and the palette knife technique. There are two individual pieces and
each piece measures 12X36. They are side by side and both are landscape pictures. They appear to
capture the same landscape. Although, the painting appears to be a... Show more content on

to match the image. One of my favorite is the one entitled Awaken, the painting is of a white
blooming flower. It features a quote by Buddha that basically says don t let what you did yesterday
define today, because today is a new day. Another one that I like is called The Way, and it is a
painting of a beach pier. The image makes me feel as if I m standing right beside it getting ready to
walk across it. The quote featured is by Rumi and it is saying that if you start your journey, where
you need to go will appear as you go. I was very pleased with this
Cellular Respiration Research Paper
Eukaryotic cells produce the chemical energy they need through the processes of either oxidative
phosphorylation or photophosphorylation. Oxidative phosphorylation is the last step in the process
of cellular respiration and accounts for nearly 90% of ATP production during cellular respiration.
During stage one of cellular respiration2 ATP molecules are broken down to provide the energy
necessary to start glycolysis. Each glucose molecule is broken down into 2 pyruvate molecules and
4 ATPs are formed. A net gain of two ATPs is realized. In stage two the pyruvate molecules enter
into the mitochondrion of the cell. The pyruvate molecules are oxidized into the compound acetyl
CoA. In stage three, the acetyl CoA passes into citric acid cycle(Krebs... Show more content on

This is known as the light dependent reaction of photosynthesis. The goal of photophosphorylation
is to take the energy from sunlight and convert it into chemical energy for the Calvin cycle. The
Calvin cycle then takes this chemical energy and uses it to make glucose. Photophosphorylation
begins when a photon (packet of light) is absorbed by a pigment (light absorbing molecule), which
is attached to a protein along the thylakoid membrane of the chloroplast. The energy from the
photon creates resonance (electron passing from one pigment to the next), which eventually reaches
a special reaction center. The reactions center is a protein that houses a special pair of chlorophyll
molecules capable of releasing electrons. When the chlorophyll molecules get excited, they release
two electrons. These two electrons then move along the membrane through a series of specialized
protein releasing energy as they go. This action creates an H+ gradient inside the lumen of the
chloroplast. Eventually the electrons reach the end of the chain and attach onto electron carriers.
The H+ flow across the ATP Synthase protein where they meet up with ADP (andesine diphosphate)
and Pi (phosphate group) to from ATP. The chemical energy created can then be used in the Calvin
Fast Food Nation Thesis
After reading chapter six of Fast Food Nation it has really opened my eyes as to how these fast
food restaurants are not only having a large impact on humans but the treatment of chickens as
well. While everyone knows that they kill animals in order to provide humans with meat not
everyone knows how these animals are treated during the process. Though the invention of the
chicken nugget was a new and better option for people it only provided worse treatment of these
birds and caused lazier bird farmers . Before most Chicken was sold whole; today about 90 percent
of chicken sold in the United States has been cut into pieces, cutlets, or nuggets, (Schlosser 140).

Components of the human diet
A nutrient is a chemical substance found in foods that is used in the human body. The nutrients
needed in the human diet are amino acids, fatty acids, minerals, vitamins and water. Metabolic fuel
is often supplied from carbohydrates and fats, which are almost, always present in human diets but
specific carbohydrates are not essential. * Metabolic fuel can also be supplied from proteins.
Chemical energy is all the fuels are transferred into a required movement/action (contracting muscle)

Iodine deficiency can be prevented by the addition of salt.
Vitamin addition to diet
There is an increase in dietary supplements, specifically vitamin pills. However, little evidence of
effectiveness. The use of vitamins is mainly popular in competitive athletes ad elderly, who are
concerned about their decreasing health. But, they are also used when an individual lacks a specific
mineral or vitamin.
Multivitamin capsules contain the recommended quantity of each vitamin. But, once the body is
saturated with the required vitamins, excess vitamins can accumulate. Many vitamins are water
soluble and any excess is quickly excreted, but vitamins, which are not soluble, they accumulate can

Relapse And Control Behavior
Understanding relapse is important because the phenomenon suggested that even when there is
suppression on responding, operant behavior may be susceptible to relapse as changing contexts
(Bouton, Todd, Vurbic, Winterbauer, 2011).
Lapse and relapse effects evidence that extinguished responding returns if the context is changed
after extinction (Bouton, Winterbauer, Todd, 2012). Specifically, following extinction in context B,
the relation learned in context A (CS results in US or response results in reinforcement) will not
control behavior if in context B. However, following extinction in context A, the relation learned in
context A (CS results in US or response results in reinforcement) will control behavior if in context

In ABC renewal, acquisition occurs in context A, extinction in context B, and then testing context C.
In addition, AAB should also be taken into consideration.
Taking together, the hypothesized process of ABA renewal can be due to excitatory conditioning in
context A or inhibitory conditioning in context B or both. Therefore, in order to isolate these
processes, Bouton, Todd, Vurbic and Winterauer (2011) found other ways of changing the current
context. Specifically, Bouton and colleagues included between group comparison of ABA versed
AAB renewal in the first experiment. During baseline training, the lever press responses resulted in
food as reinforcement on a variable interval 30 seconds (VI 30s) schedule. The trainings happened
in the context A for both groups. However, extinction occurred in context A for AAB group, whereas
extinction occurred in context B for ABA group. Finally, the two groups were put into test sessions
in both context A and context B in a counterbalanced order. The results of this experiment found both
ABA and AAB renewal after operant extinction. This revealed that renewal not only due to returning
to training context as AAB group did not go back to the original context but still got the relapse
effect. In addition, rats did not only learn the excitatory conditioning in which case learning to
respond to get reinforcement in context A. This was because rats still responded even when
