Experimental Research and The Key Components of
A Successful Experiment
Ehsan Jamil

Abstract
This paper explores the experimental research method and specifically the experiment conducted by
Professor Smith, a Psychology professor who has a hypothesis that Vitamin E improves memory, to
determine the flaws in her experiment. In the process, the paper also clearly explains the various key
factors which determine the outcome and accuracy of the method of experimental research, such as
dependent variables, independent variables, experimental groups, and control groups. This paper
examines the factors that render Professor Smith s experiment as flawed, and finally attempts ...

This could easily have had a demoralizing effect on the mental state of the control group and an
encouraging effect on the experimental group, which would decrease the accuracy and validity of
her findings as other factors beside the independent variable could have affected the dependent
variable. Another flaw with her experimental design is the division of the experimental group and
the control group into two seperate sections, creating a social inequity, specially as the first half of
the students were allowed to sit in the front and the latter half were made to sit in the ramaining
half of the class in the back. This could have created a sense of expectancy in the experimental
group and compelled them to try harder, while the control group might have assumed they weren t
expected to do well and as a result not strive enough to succeed. According to Feldman and Dinardo
( 2012 ), one of the factors that distort how the independent variable affects the dependent variable in
an experiment is participant expectations. The participants in Professor Smith s experiment were
aware of their assigned groups, which could have raised or lowered their expectations, depending on
the group to which they were assigned. Finally, the flaw with Professor Smith s conclusion is that
the experiment was conducted to test her hypothesis that Vitamin E

Social Actors And Organizations As One Working Unit
Blumer lastly notes that although many methodologies observe large social actors and organizations
as one working unit, this does not allow the understanding of how the organization functions.
Researchers should look at the individuals within the organization to see how those individuals fit
together and how they interact. The interactions of the people within the organization paint a picture
of how the organization functions and makes its decisions. Blumer sums up his essay perfectly by
saying respect the empirical world and organize a methodological stance to reflect that respect
(Blumer 1986, p. 60). Criticisms of Symbolic Interactionism As with any theory there are critics of
symbolic interactionism. One weakness of symbolic... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His reasoning behind why he believes this is a bit confusing and does not fully explain why this
data is unreliable. He does explain that data created from a recreated world is not useable which
is understandable because it is not being taken from the real world, but he does not fully explain
why quantitative data taken from the real world is inherently wrong. He dismisses any validity it
may hold. This is also confusing for the reader because he is very vocal about testability. He sees
testability as important but throws out research types with clear testability. Many believe that
Blumer s symbolic interactionism lacks hard evidence and testability. A person interprets a symbol
and acts how they choose to act. This lacks the ability to be tested incorrect. Because this theory
allows for the actor to respond in any way they want, then the theory can never be proven wrong
meaning there is no testability (Melzer, Petros, and Reynolds 1975). Skidmore (1975) points out
that Blumer s theory does not account for why an actor will make the same choice in a given
situation. This paper allows for the assumption that every time an actor faces a situation they
consciously interpret it and then make a choice on how to respond. This does not account for the
unconscious acts and feelings that go into an action. Some actions are made without a full
understanding of why
Canadian Mining Industry
Mining has always been an important industry in the Canadian economy. As the Canadian economy
is rebounding, so too is mining experiencing growth. With many planned explorations and mining
operations underway, this sector looks like it ll be growing for some time to come. Many mining
companies are already hiring. If you re thinking about employment in the mining industry, consider
these eight mining jobs. 1. Engineer Almost all of engineer roles are readily available as the mining
industry continues to grow and expand its operations in different provinces. Planning and project
engineers will find themselves in high demand. Mining engineers are also integral to the operation of
mines. Engineers are involved in metallurgy, often as process... Show more content on

A number of features work to keep mines safer than ever before. This includes heating, cooling,
climate control, air quality control, and lighting. Electricians are vital to mining operations. They are
employed during the construction of the mine and some continue on after to ensure everything is
running effectively in the mine. Their work keeps the mine running smoothly and keeps everyone
safe. 6. Construction Manager Speaking of construction, did you know many mines will employ a
construction manager or two? During the initial phases of mining a new site, the mine must be
constructed. To do this, miners call in a number of construction workers. Construction managers are
among them. As mine operations often continue expanding after the initial site is opened,
construction managers may find themselves working on expansion construction projects. 7.
Procurement Specialists Mining is a business. To keep the business running smoothly, miners must
buy and receive important supplies. As a result, supply chain management is also a critical piece of
the mine s operations. Procurement specialists are needed in mining. Warehouse supervisors, buyers,
and contract specialists all work to keep the mine operating flawlessly. They ensure the right

For this case study our group, Group 6, has decided to review Case #12 dealing with Paper

We will begin by considering the major relevant issues in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is also an issue because OCI can always lower the price of its own brand to create more sales.
Chin must think about who would spend more on PPI s brand when OCI has a similar quality for a
lower price?

Another issue is that there are many competitors out there. These competitors are hungry for
business and they are willing to undercut PPI s price and loose profit just for the business. She must
look at what the competitors are offering to the consumers so she can see if she can cut PPI s price
down to match the competitors price while continuing to maintain an acceptable profit.

Central Problem

After evaluating a number of issues that affect PPI it all comes to one central problem, how can
Chin keep OCI at a relevant level of sales without loosing business to competitors? This includes
deciding on the details of a contract, compromising company policy, forming a buying contract with
OCI, and considering other market options. Diane needs to present the benefits of contracting with
OCI to the president of PPI. He could then see what difference contracting could make and what can
be lost if deciding not to form a contract with OCI. This needs to be done by showing the contrast
between different implications for accepting and denying OCI s request while stressing benefits of
contracting. There is a chance for redesigning company policy if the presentation impresses the
Horniman Horticulture
Background
Horniman Horticulture is a whole sale nursery business that has been owned by Maggie and Bob
for three years. They have seen an increase in business and number of plants grown at the nursery
and are expecting demand to continue to grow. In 2005, the business s profit margin was expected
to grow to 5.8% up from 3.1% in 2003. This projected growth seems accurate considering Maggie s
conservative approach with the companies cash balance. Handling the finances, Maggie dislikes debt
financing because of her fear of holding too much inventory and thus not being able to make interest
payments. Since the business relies on good weather conditions with some mature plants taking
years to grow, severe weather can destroy this inventory. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Past 2004, net working capital in 2005 was $97,200 which is 1.6x the net income of $60,800. If
they continue to increase their net working capital like they have in the past, the projected net
working capital for 2006 would be $235,900 which would cause them a negative cash balance of
193,000. When you look at the balance sheet in Exhibit B we can see that the current assets have
increased 19% and total assets increased 14.4%. This is due primarily to the increase in inventory
and accounts receivable. In the four years from 2002 to 2005 inventory has increased 8.7% and
accounts receivable has increased 16.4%. Due to this, the cash balance has decreased from
$120,100 all the way down to $9,400. In addition in 2005, the cash balance went below their comfort
level of $10,000 down to $9,400. This is not meeting their expectation of their 8% minimum of total
revenue target.
Financial Ratio Analysis Even though their business was growing significantly, and they were
experiencing a steady increase in revenues, they were seeing a huge decrease in their cash. The
reason for this is because of their recent change to an increase in business from small nurseries. By
looking at the financial ratios, even though they are increasing in sales, you can tell that they are
relaxed on their accounts receivable and credit terms. Each year it takes them longer to collect their
money. This is due to the fact that the carrying cost of inventory is harder for the

Columbia Psy-107 Essay
Overview. The launch of Columbia STS 107 occurred on January 16th, 2003, for a sixteen day
mission. After the launch of Columbia, there were six missions (STS 114 through STS 119)
scheduled to fly before the launch of STS 120 scheduled for February 19th, 2004. During the launch
of STS 107, a piece of foam insulation broke off of the orbiter and struck the left wing of the shuttle.
As a result, when the shuttle renter the atmosphere of Earth the damaged permitted gases from the
atmosphere to deteriorate the wing structure, which ultimately caused the craft to break away and
become unstable. While in orbir, the crewmembers spent hours a day doing scientific experiments in

Chaucer s Canterbury Tales
Dishonesty and Hypocrisy in The Physician s and Pardoner s Tales

Chaucer presents characters in the Physician s and Pardoner s Tales who are very similar to each
other in one important way. Although the characters seem on the surface to be mirror images of
each other, they have an important underlying similarity: both the physician and the pardoner are not
what they appear to be to most people. Both are hypocritical, although they show this hypocrisy in
different ways.

One way of seeing this hypocrisy, in the case of the physician s tale, is to examine the way the
similarities and differences between the knight Virginius and the physician himself in terms of what
he sees as moral actions. It seems fairly clear that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The tale as told by the physician, however, is problematic as a moral example, because (although
Virginia may have had to submit to the judge s rule that he live with her), there is nothing in
Apius ruling that would have forced her to yield her chastity to him. She would still have had a
moral choice when she submitted. It may be that the choice would have come to nothing but
consentual or nonconsentual sex with Apius. This is still a very important distinction in Christian
terms, because without yielding her consent, Virginia would have been guilty of no sin. It may
have been that she would have been dishonored in the eyes of society if she was to live with the
judge, but she would have committed no moral transgression. By identifying himself with
Virginius, by drawing on a similar story in the Biblical book of Judges to provide moral backing
for his own story, and holding the tale up as a moral example of Christian behavior, the physician re
frames it in terms of Christian ethics, although it is set in ancient Rome. It is understandable
(although perhaps unusual to the modern reader) that a father would rather see his daughter dead
than sacrifice her eternal reward in heaven; but once it is realized that her eternal reward, within the
context of this tale, is not at stake, it seems absurd that a father would rather have his
The Pros And Cons Of Western Civilizations
The statement that western civilizations have survived all these years without any input from the
primitive cultures of the Two Thirds world traditions is false. Everyone from around the world have
taken ideas from the primitive cultures, which helped build each land to what it is today. Taking
ideas from primitive cultures especially helped the Europeans who came to America. They tried to
make Native Americans assimilate to their western ideals, culture, and religion. Even though the
Europeans tried forcing the Native Americans to assimilate, they still took ideas from the Native
Americans. So western civilizations did indeed take from the primitive cultures of the Two Thirds
world.
The Native Americans were actually the first people to come up with democracy. They had people
elect officials, the women expelled the leaders if they were not doing their job correctly, and
anyone who is a leader would give up their spot as an official if they are a warrior. The Europeans
saw this and liked how the Native Americans valued liberty, freedom, and individuality, and decided
to use democracy in their government. The Native Americans believed in the art of persuasion. They
would talk to the other elected officials about their views and try to convince them ... Show more

They introduced a variety of different foods to the Europeans such as string beans, corn, squash,
tomatoes, and chocolate. The Native Americans implemented polyculture which is planting
multiple crops together. By using polyculture you could harvest food faster and reduce the amount
of weeds produced. They also used hilling which helps plants grow more efficiently. They also
grew corn in such a way that husks were created. The husks were used for many things as well as
the corn. The Native Americans were the ones who showed the settlers how to plant food. Without
their help, the settlers may not have been able to grow food effectively in a new
Essay Comparing Beowulf And The Rule Of St. Benedict
Beowulf and The Rule of St. Benedict are both examples of what a well ordered society

would look like during this period in time. Both of these societies had a system that they used to

keep them functioning to their greatest potential. In Beowulf, the great mead hall called Heorot,

before the coming of Grendel, was the model for this society. It is the area in which the king and

his people gathered to eat and plan battles. In Benedict, the system they used that resembled a

society functioning to the best of its ability was a monastery, which is a building that is used by

monks where they live under religious promises that must be kept. These two types of well

ordered societies are both similar and different in many ways. In this ... Show more content on

They are both viewed as an example as to how a well ordered society should function and

The Heorot and monastery are also different in many ways as well. The monastery is

The Role Of Friar Lawrence In Shakespeare s Romeo And Juliet
In the Shakespearean classic, Romeo and Juliet, published for modern use by the Folger
Shakespeare Library, William Shakespeare, the writer of the tragedy, makes statements about
social interactions during a period of time so that they may be recorded historically in an
intriguing way. The focus of the excerpt is on the speech and recollection of Friar Lawrence s
perspective of the events that have taken place. Romeo has just discovered Juliet unconscious and
ends his life for Juliet, who soon awakens and finds her lover dead, and ends her life to be reunited
with her lover and to share the same fate. Friar Lawrence s involvement in the scheme to prevent
sinful events from taking place has been given to the parents of the deceased in the... Show more

The clergy were well informed and dedicated their lives for studying their interests and their
pursuits of understanding were established well before the Renaissance. The Friar reflects on his
actions stating, Then I gave her (so tutored by my art) a sleeping potion... (pg 238). The clergy
were highly regarded for their education and were often heard with little argument against their
teachings. Shakespeare also includes an aspect of the play of which was considered normal and
is against the law and looked down upon in modern times as Paris, who himself is within his 30s,
desires to marry a 13 year old Juliet. Shakespeare has the Friar analyze the situation between
Romeo and Juliet and give personal opinions which seem to criticize the rash actions of Juliet as
well as Romeo, as the lovers are out for passion and ensure that people will succumb to their needs
as they wish. The Friar recalls Juliet threatening him to help her as stated, To rid her of this second
marriage, or in my cell there she would kill herself (pg. 238). The Friar makes statements about
