1. INTRODUCTION

This report aims to describe the activities observed during

the mandatory curricular internship (ECS), held from December 10 to
January 12, 2004, at the Water and Sewage Company of Maranhão
(CAEMA).
In the integration phase, corresponding to the first 5 days, the activities
were held at the company's administrative headquarters. On the other days,
corresponding to the development phase, the activities were carried out
in the deep wells of CAEMA, scattered throughout the capital of the state.

2. CAEMA - COMPANY OF WATER AND SEWAGE OF MARANHÃO

2.1 - THE COMPANY

CAEMA is the state-owned company responsible for capturing, treating, and distributing
of water in the state of Maranhão, as well as capture, treatment and
final launch of sewage.
Although it has a considerable volume of resources for this purpose, it is
a highly deficit company that operates enormously as a hanger of
jobs and 'political currency'. Its low efficiency and scope may
it can be noticed that 42.5% of people from Maranhão do not have access to clean water and
56% of them reside in areas not served by the sewage system.
When the internship was conducted, the company's president was Eng.
Ronaldo Braga and the supply director, Engineer Paulo Santabárbara.

2.2 – AREA WHERE THE INTERNSHIP TOOK PLACE

The part of the company where the technical internship was effectively developed.
it was the Subdepartment of Deep Wells, part of the Department of
Supply. Such subdepartment was then commanded by the Engineer.
Raimundo Pinheiro.
O water supply of the capital of Maranhão é done
predominantly by deep wells, with a total of 289
responsible for 70% of the supply of potable water.

3– ACTIVITIES CARRIED OUT

The activities carried out were basically divided into two phases:

Æ Integration Phase: with the aim of familiarization with the various

company departments and the procedures adopted in each.

Æ Development Phase: with the aim of getting to know it "on site" the
work of the engineers and technicians of the company.

3.1 – INTEGRATION PHASE

In the first two days of this phase, a familiarization was carried out with the
but various departments of the company, ranging from the Department of
Supply until the Collections Department. This activity is carried out

5
routinely with all interns and new employees, in order to
integrate them into the company's structure.
The next three days were spent familiarizing with the Department of
Supply proper, with the most relevant activities outlined.
in the following schedule:

December 12:
Æ Visit to hydraulic pump repair shops;
Æ Participation in a lecture given by geologist Eduardo Ramos
about the geological formation of the island of São Luís;
Æ Study of the profiles of the 5 deepest wells of the company.

December 15th:
Æ Visit to the water treatment center, installed at the headquarters of
company
Æ Consulting for Eng. Raimundo Pinheiro on pump specifications
submerged into the deep well ofPot Breakunderprivileged neighborhood in the outskirts
Ludovicense.

December 16:
Æ Preparation of presentation in MS PowerPoint for the Engineer.
Raimundo Pinheiro, with views à presentation of results of
Deep Wells Subdepartment at the year-end meeting with the
company president;
Æ Assistance to lawyer Jonas Rocha in the preparation of the notice for
purchase of submersible pumps.

3.2 – DEVELOPMENT PHASE

This phase was composed of participation in the field teams that

they worked on the maintenance of the aforementioned wells. Firstly, participation
it was limited to the observation of the procedures and was later expanded
for effective participation in the team's actions.
This maintenance team, composed only of technicians, has the function
basic to check what the problem is with the wells that are not found in
operation and, if the problem is with the submersible pump, to remove it.
pump it and take it to the workshop. It also has the function of reassembling the pumps.
in its proper place after being repaired at the workshop.
During the 15 days in which this phase was developed, visits were made.
32 wells out of a total of 289 spread across the entire island of São Luís. A generated one.
report on the deficiencies of the maintenance team, being the conclusion
primordial of this report is the inefficiency of the tools adopted and the
preponderance of the use of human force to remove the bombs.
It was recommended that the system used in the
SABESP, which allows the use of Munk trucks for pump removal and

also allows for the removal of the bomb without the consequent removal of everything
plumbing (which sometimes amounts to 200 meters).
The recommendations of such a report were not adopted due to restrictions.
budgetary.
In parallel to participating in the maintenance team, every day
two hours were reserved for compiling the reported issues by the
consumers and the solution adopted. It was possible to perceive, in the execution of such
task, that the average time to solve problems was 8 working days and the
the most common complaint was the lack of water caused by the pump breaking
submerged.

4. CONCLUSION

The Supervised Internship proved to be of great value, as it not only

to allow for greater development in the field of engineering - by being able to
experiencing real situations where it is applied - also allowed a
greater knowledge of the situation of my compatriots, thus providing a
technical and human learning.
The lesson learned in terms of engineering is the little concern of the
system administrators with projects that have long-term results.
To the detriment, at least in the public service, the preference is for results of
short-term impact, although with reduced impact. The change is urgent.
situation for the good of the country.
