What’s New
Environment Defined
According to Business Dictionary, environment in the business perspective refers
to combination of internal and external factors that influence a company’s operating
situation. These factors include clients, suppliers, competitors, owners, available
technology, laws governing, and market, social, and economic trends.
External factors include economic, political and legal, demographic, social,
global, and technological profile of the target market.
Market defined
Market refers to the group of consumers or organizations that is interested in
the product, has the resources to purchase the product, and is permitted by law and
other regulations to acquire the product.
Activity 1. Identifying NEEDS VS WANTS
On a separate sheet of paper, copy the table below. Classify each word in the box as to
NEED or WANT by writing it under the column that corresponds to it.
iPod, water, electricity, WIFI, stay at home,
COVID info, cellphone, going out to eat, a vehicle, a computer
NEEDS WANTS
Confused? These terms seem so simple and easy to understand, but too often,
we blur the lines. It’s ok, please proceed to the next to be more enlightened on the topic.
What is It
I. NEEDS VS WANTS
To reduce your confusion, think of the things that you can’t survive without them.
Do you have something in mind? These things that you have thought cannot live
without are considered as Needs. Needs include food to eat, water to drink, clothing
to keep you warm, and shelter to live in. Things that provide you pleasure, enjoyable
moments, and desires as considered Wants.
II. GENERATING IDEAS FOR BUSINESS
One of the preliminaries in building a strong foundation of a business is to identify the
typical customer and find ways to design your marketing strategy accordingly.
Identify Your Target Markets
Variation of marketing approach, products and services depends mainly on the
target market. For example, if your target market is made up of students, you
should understand which approach work best.
Choose specific demographic profile to target.
Figuring out your target market’s need is your priority but you should also expand
your goal to reach out those who are most likely to buy your products and
services. Consider these factors:
• Age- the length of time that a person has lived or a thing has existed
3
• Location - a particular place or position
• Gender- either of the two sexes (male and female),
• Income level - money that an individual or business receives,
• Education level - refers to the highest level of education that a person has
• Marital or family status - used on official forms to ask if a person is married,
single, divorced, or widowed
• Occupation - job or profession, means of living, source of income
• Ethnic background - means the group from which you descend and that shares
a distinct identity
The various key demographics in your target market has many similarities. All are
essential in determining which characteristics are shared and which ones your
customers should appeal to.
Establish How Customers Shop
Customer has different behaviors in purchasing. They may be any of the following:
1. Research products and/or services online and then pay them online as well.
2. Research products and/or services but prefers buying them the traditional
way.
3. Purchase the traditional way by going to the stores and buy there.
It is therefore a must to consider these three types of customers in determining your
store layout, be it a virtual and/ or a brick-and-mortar store.
Understand Why Customers Buy What They Buy
It is really necessary to identify why people buy what they buy? Absolutely, yes. The
following factors motivates a customer to buy what they buy:
1. Preferability of branded over generic products and vice versa.
2. Relevance of every cent they spend.
3. Impulsive or emotional needs buying as described by buying to keep updated
with the latest trends and fashions
Considering these factors seriously is the key to a lasting business.
Listen to What Customers Say
Social media is now one of the most effective platforms in exercising a person’s
freedom to express his thoughts and ideas. Feedbacks and comments to products are
not excused. As a proactive entrepreneur, finding out what your competitor’s customer
negative feedback and comments are offers you an opportunity to create something
they lack.
