In this lesson, you will learn:

• grammar rules of using present simple and present continuous tense;
• patterns of questions and negatives in present simple and present
continuous tense;
• state verbs that we don’t usually use in the continuous form.

 I. Warm up 3 minutes

Read the description of a family type; think about why the author puts
the underlined verbs in present simple tense(一般现在时)?

Our family is a typical nuclear family(核心家庭). There’s me, my

wife, and our three children. We’re from Scotland but we live in
London. The boys don’t see much of their grandparents or their
cousins, except for when we go to Scotland during the school
holidays.

 II. Present simple 4 minutes

We use the present simple(一般现在时):

• to talk about something that is true in the present / always true 描述现在的状态/普遍真理
• to describe repeated or regular activities 描述经常的或规律性的动作

Read the sentences and then decide if it, is true in the present, is
always true, or happens again and again.
➢ We always go on holiday in the summer.
➢ Thailand is really hot at this time of year.
➢ The Queen of England lives in Buckingham Palace.
➢ He watches black and white films at his cinema club on Wednesdays.

? Now that you have learned to use present simple in affirmatives (肯定句), what about questions and negatives(否定句)?

 III. Present continuous 5 minutes

We use the present continuous(现在进行时) (am/is/are + -ing):

• to talk about temporary things which have begun but haven‘t finished. They are often
happening now, at this moment 描述正在进行中的暂时性动作
• for future arrangements with other people 与他人安排好未来发生的动作

➢ We are all riding camels and the sun’s shining. happening now

➢ They are waiting for me to get off the phone! happening now

➢ At eight I’m meeting Lucas, just for a quick coffee. future arrangement

Tip:
There is a group of verbs which are called state verbs(静态动词) which we use
? Can we use the present continuous with all verbs? for states (not actions) and we don't usually use these in the continuous
form.
E.g. like, think, have(for possession)

Questions Negatives (否定句)

Change round the subject(主语) and the verb. Add not after the verb to be. Don’t forget to use a
