I. Warm up 5 minutes

Read the following paragraph as FAST as you can even if you do not know all the
vocabulary. Try to identify specific words and phrases in the paragraph which are
the same as or similar to words and phrases in the statement.

3
There are many types of family systems around the world. In North
America and northern Europe, the nuclear family is often seen as the
most typical. In contrast, in most other parts of the world, extended
families, which include other family members such as grandparents,
aunts, uncles and cousins, are seen as the norm.

? True or False? The nuclear family is seen as the most common in the USA.

© 2018 Acadsoc Limited TI: Ask the student to find specific words quickly, then decide whether the statement is true or false.

? •• Did you re-read the paragraph to answer the question?

If so, exactly how much of the paragraph did you re-read?

II. True/False/Not given questions 4 minutes

When we read texts, we use two techniques depending on what

we are looking for in the text: skimming & scanning.

Skimming(略读) means that you read the text quickly to get a general idea
5
of the topic or content without worrying about specific details and
examples.

Scanning(查读) means that you read the text quickly to find specific
information, e.g. places, names, phrases, ignoring other information
you do not need.

? Which skill have you used when identifying specific words and phrases in warm up?

II. True/False/Not given questions 3 minutes

Example: It was thought that the Industrial Revolution(工业革命) created the nuclear
family, which has only parents and their children living together. However,
scholars have found that the nuclear family has actually been the most
common type of family in England since the 1200s.

? True or False? Since the 1200s, the nuclear family was the most common 6

type of family in England.

Step 1: Scanning the text to identify specific words which are the same
or similar as in the given sentence.

*Scanning tips:
➢ It is not necessary to read each word.
➢ Look at the text quickly to find key word(s).

Step 2: Skimming the identified sentence or nearby sentences to check

whether they say the same as the given sentence.

*Skimming tips:
➢ Go back to the text and re-read it quickly.
➢ Read the first and last sentences of paragraphs when you want to get the main ideas.

III. Practice 4 minutes

We may think we know what we mean by a ‘nuclear family’ and an ‘extended family’,
but reality is more complicated than most people believe. Most nuclear families are
part of extended families: children have grandparents and in many case, aunts, uncles
and cousins as well. Part of what makes them ‘nuclear’ is that they live in their own
separate household, but it is not the whole story. In Greece or Italy, for example, a
nuclear family may live in its own flat, but the extended family may live in the same 8
apartment block(街区) or in the same street and family members see each other and
even eat together every day.

? True or False? Nuclear families are isolated* from their extended family.

*isolated 偏远的,孤立的
