The Roles and Positions We Play in Society
A status in sociology represents a person’s known place in society and a role consists of the
activities and rules connected to that status. People in every society are seen and interact with
others differently depending on their numerous statuses. Scholars usually divide these roles
into categories known as ascribed and achieved. Ascribed statuses are handed down at birth
or given without an individual’s control later. Race, ethnicity, gender and being a child are
part of the categories. Additionally, achieved statuses result from a person’s own actions such
as being a student, employee, leader, or volunteer. Most of the time, roles and statuses are
linked. Society believes that each person in a position should fulfil certain purposes. A
student is expected to attend classes, finish their homework and give respect to their teachers.
They serve to keep social order by teaching people how to act and making interactions
reliable. Currently, I am a student, family member and citizen. As a student, I take part in
academic tasks and take part in classroom conversations. I use my sonhood to support my
family and show respect towards the elderly members. I aim to keep myself updated and
make sure to give back to the community where I live. Those in these positions are
responsible for certain social duties. Carrying out my role makes society safer and stronger.
For example, helping my community, complying with regulations, or telling others about key
causes supports the bond and respect people have for each other.
