ACTION RESEARCH METHODS
A. Participants
The participants of this action research will be the Grade 5 – Pagaygay pupils at Felipe
Tayko Memorial School (FTMS). We will select them through purposive sampling, a non-
probability sampling technique that allows researchers like us to intentionally choose
individuals who meet specific criteria relevant to the study (Tongco, 2007). In this case,
we will identify pupils who are observed to struggle with reading comprehension skills
through utilizing the reading passages suggested by Philippine Informal Reading
Inventory (PHIL-IRI). We believe purposive sampling is appropriate because it ensures
that our intervention will directly address the needs of the intended group, making our
research more focused, meaningful, and practical.
B. Data Gathering Methods
For the data gathering methods, we will administer a 15-item pre-test to the pupils to
assess their reading comprehension skills before we apply the intervention. We will
conduct the pre-test face-to-face to ensure that we can properly monitor and guide the
pupils during the assessment. For the intervention, we will use reading passages
recommended by the Philippine Informal Reading Inventory (Phil-IRI), anchored on
DepEd Order No. 14, s. 2018. We will apply the Sandwich Approach, where struggling
learners will be paired with two more proficient peers during guided reading sessions.
We will monitor the pupils' progress through comprehension exercises, and we will
record their performance using progress charts. After one week of implementing the
Sandwich Approach during reading lessons, we will administer a post-test face-to-face
to measure the effectiveness of the intervention materials. Finally, we will compare the
results of the pre-test and post-test to assess the learners' improvement and the overall
effectiveness of the intervention.
C. Data Analysis Plan
For the data analysis plan, we will compute the mean and standard deviation to
determine the pupils’ average scores before and after the implementation of the
Sandwich Approach. To assess whether there is a significant difference between the
pre-test and post-test scores, we will use the paired samples t-test. In addition, we will
apply Cohen’s D to measure the magnitude of the effect that the Sandwich Approach
has on the reading comprehension skills of the Grade 5 pupils. To ensure the accuracy
of the data analysis, we will also seek technical assistance from BSED Mathematics pre
-service teachers in processing and interpreting the results.
