Main Report

The document outlines a main project for a Computerized Structural Analysis course at Tanta University, requiring students to analyze a frame and shear wall structures using software like SAP. Students must draw bending moment diagrams, calculate displacements and stresses, and comment on their findings based on various loading factors and element configurations. The project emphasizes the importance of modeling techniques and the impact of element choice on structural behavior.

STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT

FACULTY OF
TANTA UNIVERSITY
ENGINNERING

COMPUTERIZED STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS Course Code: CSE4245

4th YEAR, 2nd TERM 2014-2015 MAIN PROJECT
No. of Pages: (2) Marks: 10

ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS (Using any software package as SAP or others –
neglecting the own weights):
1- Draw the bending moment diagrams of the frame shown in Fig. 1 (E= 200 t/cm2, column

section = 40*90 cm) for the shown cases of loading assuming  = 0.1, 0.5, 1, 2, 10 and
100. Then, it is required to:

a. plot the negative moment at joint (a) versus the factor

b. plot the vertical deflection at joint (c) versus the factor

c. Comment on results (deduce important conclusions).

Fig (1)

2- For the reinforced concrete shear wall shown in Fig. 2 (E= 200 t/cm2 and = 0.2) find the
horizontal displacement at point C and normal stress in Y direction at points A modeling the
RC deep beam using:
a. single frame element.
b. 10, 50 and 100 equal frame elements.
c. 10, 20, 50, 100, and1000 equal four-node shell elements (Lx= Ly).
d. 10, 20, 50, 100, and1000 equal four-node shell elements (Lx= 2Ly).
For the case of using shell element draw the distributions of normal stresses in x and y
directions for each case. Plot the normal stresses in x and y direction at points A versus
number of element in the case of using frame elements or shell elements. Plot the
horizontal displacement at point C versus number of elements in the case of using frame
elements or shell elements. Comment on results (deduce important conclusions).

3- Fig. 3 shows an RC shear wall (E= 200 t/cm2 and = 0.2) with central square opening. Its
small side length is a. It is required to:

a. Find the horizontal displacement at point C and draw the distributions of normal
stresses at point A in x and y directions for a= 0.6, 1.2, 1.8, and 2.4 m using square
shell element (30*30 cm).
b. Suggest new suitable mesh with unequal shell elements to get better results of
stresses around the openings for the case of a = 1.8 m.
c. Find the horizontal displacement at point C for a= 0.6, 1.2, 1.8, and 2.4 m using
frame elements with different inertia for each shear wall portion.

d. Plot the horizontal displacement at point A versus the side length of opening afor all

the previous cases.

e. Comment on results (deduce important conclusions).
