Network-Centric Computing

Network-centric Computing focuses on large-scale distributed computing systems and

applications that communicate through open, wide-area networks like the Internet. Typical
examples of large-scale network-centric systems are the World-Wide Web and Computational
Grids. Research in Network-centric computing focuses on the challenges that arise in the context
of the study, the design, the implementation and the operation of efficient, scalable, and robust
internet-based services and applications at a global scale. Our research activities in particular
focus on the following directions:

 Performance and Reliability Evaluation of Heterogeneous Grids: Development of

techniques and software tools for the performance exploration and personalized ranking
of computing resources available through large-scale Grids, according tothe
characteristics of user workloads.
 Grid Reliability and Dependability: Development of probabilistic modeling techniques
to represent failures in Grid infrastructure components and to understand the effect
thereof to Grid reliability. Also, development of novel techniques for the automatic
detection and avoidance of failures in Grids with the goal to improve Grid Dependability.
 Search Engines: Study of techniques for the management of metadata that are published
by large-scale, network-centric information systems. Our goal is to develop Search
Engines that will enable the integration of and search for information published by
network-centric systems. To this end, we explore the useof Ontologies and Ontology
languages (RDFS, OWL) to express metadata.
 Web Mining: Investigation of the behavior of Web robots (crawlers) that traverse the
Web collecting content on behalf of Search Engines and other Internet services. To this
end, we perform a characterization study of the HTTP interactions taking place between
robots and Web servers, which are registered in Web-server access logs. We propose the
use of Machine Learning techniques for the automatic detection of robot visits inside the
access logs.
 Application-layer Service Protocols: Design, simulation and implementation of
application-layer protocols that can be used for the development and deployment of
novel, location-based services in peer-to-peer and vehicular ad-hoc networks.

Net-centric computing is a set of principles that have been heavily adopted by the nonprofit
organization Cloud Security Alliance. Cloud computing is here to stay, but the cloud ecosystem
can be complex to navigate. This article will look at net-centric principles and break them down
for you in plain English.

The cloud is a computer network of remote computing servers, made accessible on-demand to
users who may be located anywhere. The cloud gives you the ability to access, store and share
your information and data from any Internet-connected device.

The cloud has revolutionized the way that companies store and share information in comparison
to traditional on-premise infrastructures. However, not all organizations have yet taken
advantage of this technology. The Cloud Computing Service Provider industry includes those
firms are as follows:

 IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service)

 PaaS (Platform as a Service)
 SaaS (Software as a Service)

SaaS is basically the application delivery over the Internet. The application is installed on to the
cloud provider’s servers and each user has a web browser interface to access the applications.
The data that you store in this environment can be accessed from any device with an internet
connection.

PaaS offers a platform over the cloud where each user can access resources such as databases,
storage, and bandwidth with a single login. The platform enables users to develop and deploy
applications in which they can use applications programming interfaces (API).

IaaS provides storage, processor power, memory, operating systems, and networking capabilities
to customers so that they do not have to buy and maintain their own computer system
infrastructure.
