CP104 Lab Activity

The laboratory activity focuses on managing crops and assessing losses through hands-on experiences in land preparation, pest and disease identification, and crop loss assessment. Students will engage in three sessions involving planting, monitoring for pests and diseases, and evaluating crop damage. A worksheet is provided for recording observations and a rubric is included for grading participation and accuracy.

LABORATORY ACTIVITY:
From Soil to Harvest: Managing Crops and Assessing Losses

Duration:
2–3 lab sessions (adjustable based on crop growth observation time)
Objectives:
By the end of the activity, students should be able to:
1. Describe and perform basic land preparation techniques.
2. Identify pests and diseases affecting plants.
3. Apply appropriate pest and disease management techniques.
4. Assess crop damage and estimate crop loss due to pest/disease pressure.
Materials Needed:
 Planting trays or pots (1 per group)
 Soil and compost
 Seeds or seedlings (e.g., pechay, okra, mungbean – fast-growing)
 Labels/tags
 Watering can or sprayer
 Pesticide/insecticide/fungicide samples
 Hand lens or magnifying glass
 Pest/disease identification guide
 Worksheets (provided below)
 Gloves, masks, and safety equipment

LAB ACTIVITY PROCEDURE:

Session 1: Land Preparation and Planting
1. Fill the pots/trays with a soil-compost mix.
2. Perform basic land preparation (breaking clumps, leveling, watering).
3. Plant seeds or transplant seedlings.
4. Label each plot with group name and crop name.
5. Record the date of planting and initial observations.

Session 2: Pest and Disease Monitoring (7–10 days after planting)

1. Observe and record any signs of pests (holes, chewed leaves, wilting) or
diseases (spots, discoloration, mold).
2. Identify the pest or disease using guides.
3. Recommend a suitable control method (biological, mechanical, chemical).
4. Apply treatment if needed (use mock sprays ).

Session 3: Assessment of Crop Loss (2–3 weeks after planting)

1. Count total number of healthy vs. damaged plants.
2. Estimate percentage of crop affected.
Crop Loss % = (No. of Affected Plants ÷ Total Plants) × 100
3. Discuss possible reasons for crop loss.
4. Suggest practices to reduce crop loss in future.
