NUMBERS

Numbers in English can be divided into four, namely Cardinal, Ordinal, Fraction, and
Decimal. The function and samples of the numbers will be explained in following
discussion.

1. NUMBERS
a) Cardinal
Cardinal numbers are numbers representing quantity. They are usually used for daily
counting and to show the quantity of a thing, for example, two books, three girls, ten
houses and etc
1 one 50 fifty
2 two 60 sixty
3 three 70 seventy
4 four 100 one hundred
5 five 200 two hundred
6 six
7 seven
8 eight
9 nine
10 ten
11 eleven
12 twelve
13 thirteen
14 fourteen
20 twenty
21 twenty one
22 twenty two
30 thirty
40 forty
1,000 one thousand
1,000,000 one million
1,000,000,000 one billion
1,000,000,000,000 one trillion
Notice a comma (,) can be used when there are more than three numbers, such as 1,000
Example: 1,265 = one thousand, two hundred and sixty five
b) Ordinal
Ordinal numbers are numbers used to show order or position in a series and to indicate
date, for example, first book, second man, March 2 nd, 2004 etc
1st the first 15th the fifteenth
2nd the second 16th the sixteenth
3rd the third 17th the seventeenth
4th the fourth 19th the nineteenth
5th the fifth 20th the twentieth
6th the sixth 21st the twenty first
7th the seventh 22nd the twenty second
8th the eighth 23rd the twenty third
9th the ninth 24th the twenty fourth
10th the tenth 25th the twenty fifth
11th the eleventh 26th the twenty sixth
12th the twelfth 30th the thirtieth
13th the thirteenth 31st the thirty first
14th the fourteenth 32nd the thirty second

c) Decimal
Decimal number is used to show decimal figures.
Notes:

1. We use . (point) to indicate decimal numbers, for example 1.74 not 1,74

2. Numbers will be read in the ordinary if they are put before point.
3. Numbers will be read separately it they come after point.

4. 0 (zero) will be stated as ‘nought’ if it comes before point but it will be stated as
‘ought’ if it is put after point
For example:
4.1 (four point one) 0.203 ( Nought point two ought three )
41.1 (forty one point one) 0.07 ( Nought point ought seven)
41.11 (forty one point one one)
0.12 ( Nought point one two )

d) Fraction
Fraction numbers is used to show fraction figures
A
A will be read in cardinal number and B will be read in ordinal number
B

For examples:
½ a half
1/3 one third
2/3 two thirds
¼ a quarter
2/4 two fourths or two quarters
¾ three fourths or three quarters
4/5 four fifths
3/6 three sixths
