CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

How do individuals typically despose their

household waste? What measures can be taken to promote

more sustainable waste management practices on a

community level?

Solid waste was already a problem even before

pollution of the air and water reached the level of

concern for human society. The problem of solid waste

has existed from the beginning of civilization. Due to

the advancement of new products, services, and

technologies, garbage has evolved through the years in

terms of quantity and quality. These days, a

person's money, location, culture, and state all have

an impact on the waste quality.

3
The twentieth century is recognized as the American

Century and the twenty first century is recognized as

the Asian Century and it seems everybody wants to earn

“As much as Possible” (Ramesha et al. 2021). After

Asia, the developing of Africa could take the central

stage of development in the coming years. The

development dose not come without environmental burdens

and generation of waste problem is among them. Waste in

recent time has become a topic of extensive attention

in academic and popular literature (Tim 2009). Waste is

conventionally defined as unwanted material at the

point of generation which does not have immediate use.

Statement of the Problem

4
The study was conducted to determine if Proper

Waste Management can help the environment and protect

the health of students at Surigao del Norte National

Highschool.

Specifically, it seeks to answer the following

questions:

1. What is the effective solution to address the

waste problem?

2. What are the benefits of implementing a

comprehensive waste management practices in

schools?

Significance of the Study

5
The result of the study will benefit the

following:

Students.

Good waste control at school teaches kids to care

for the environment. Kids learn to lessen waste,

recycle, and compost, and see why it is vital. Taking

part in waste control grows thinking skills and helps

solve problems. Kids learn to spot chances to cut

waste and do it in school. This helps them become more

aware of the environment and can help with bigger

issues in their areas.

Teachers and staffs.

Teachers, school heads, and cleaners do great

work. Taking care of trash saves hours and stuff used

in picking up, splitting, and tossing out rubbish.

Plus, a tidy, well-ordered school from smart trash

handling makes workers feel better and more cheerful.

6
Little touch with bad things and cleaner ways make

the school a safer, more healthful place.

Environment.

Proper trash care at school saves Earth and

prevents pollution. Schools can cut waste to landfills

by recycling and composting. Good trash care defends

nature and prevents harm from landfills and burning

waste.

Scope and Limitation

Waste mismanagement in schools poses significant

challenges to environmental sustainability, public health,

7
and educational outcomes. This research will take a closer

look at a wide range of improper waste management

practices in schools, from their impacts on waste

generation, environmental degradation, health risks,

educational environments to community relations.

Handling trash at schools isn't easy. There

are lots of problems, and the primary problem is schools

don't have good ways to properly segregate

garbage that's why it mixed up most of the

time. This makes it tough to recycle and generates more

garbage. Also, schools don't have enough places to put

trash, which can cause more mess and hurt nature. Students

and staff should learn more about proper waste disposal

and practice 3R`s as much as possible.

Definition of Terms

8
This is to facilitate and understand more of the

study. The researchers provided this definition of terms

to fully understand the study.

Waste refers to a product or a substance

that is no longer suited for its intended use.

Waste Management is the process of

collecting treating recycling and disposing of

different waste materials.

3R`s is used to refer to the three terms

that are Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

Mismanagement refers to a situation in

which something is organized or controlled badly.

Impact refers to the force of impression

of one thing on another: a significant or major

effect.

Staff refers to a position in which the

employee provides labor to a company.

9
Pollution refers to the introduction of

harmful materials into the environment.

WASTE SEGREGATION is the process of

identifying, classifying, dividing and sorting of

garbage and waste products in an effort to reduce,

reuse and recycle.

CHAPTER II

10
REVIEW OF THE RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter presents the relevant

literature and studies that the researchers

considered in straightening the improvement of the

present study.

(Mukherjee A. 2021) In the current

scenario, the word waste management holds much

importance in every individual's life. Pollution

and the generation of vast waste quantities with

no proper waste management process have become one

of humanity's biggest threats. This review article

provides a complete review of the innovative

technologies currently employed to handle and

dispose of the waste successfully. This work aims

to include the different solid, liquid, gaseous,

and radioactive waste management processes.

According to the European Union (EU)

Waste Framework Directive 2008/98/EC, ‘any

11
substance or object which the holder discards or

intends or is required to discard is defined as

waste’. In addition municipal waste consists of

waste collected by or on behalf of municipal

authorities and disposed of via established waste

management systems. The waste sector has

conventionally referred to municipal solid

waste (hereafter MSW) excluding “wastewater”,

which is considered under the water or

industry sectors (UNEP, 2011). Therefore it

is

important to note that MSW excludes the

following waste streams: waste from sewage

treatment, construction and demolition activities.

MSW consists primarily of waste generated

by households, although it also includes

waste from sources (and of similar

composition)

12
such as commercial and industrial waste (Eurostat,

2014)

As world population grows so does the solid

waste generation increases as well. This resulted

in a relatively large quantity of solid waste

remaining poorly managed and challenge to the

society.

(Licy C. 2013) The topic of environmental

protection has attained highest importance in this

era globally but the practices of basic concepts

waste disposal are often neglected. People around

the globe are aware of the impact of improper

waste disposal practices, but the negative

attitude of implementation gives rise to chaotic

situations.

(Ajobo J. 2014) Waste management is the

collection, transport, processing or disposal,

13
managing and monitoring of waste materials. The

term usually relates to materials produced by

human activity, and the process is generally

undertaken to reduce their effect on health, the

environment or aesthetics.

Waste management is a distinct practice

from resource recovery which focuses on delaying

the rate of consumption of natural resources. All

waste materials, whether they are solid, liquid,

gaseous or radioactive fall within the remit of

waste management.

(Olufayo O. 2007) One of the consequences

of population growth is waste management. It

therefore becomes a serious problem that needs

attention from the government or agencies

responsible for this. This same issue applies to

Ekiti state that was carved out of old Ondo state

exactly ten years ago. The state continues to

14
witness population growth while waste management

is becoming an issue of concern.

The ultimate solution existing in the

country is the RA 9003 or the Ecological Solid

Waste Management Act of 2000 which highlights the

practices of segregation, proper disposal, and

waste diversion.

The importance of envisioning a trash-

free Philippines and encouraging people’s

participation and awareness is also emphasized.

The implementation and enforcement of the

provisions of this Act (Republic Act 9003) shall

be the primary responsibility of the Local

Govemment Units (LGUs) within their respective

jurisdictions as stipulated in the RA 7160,

otherwise known as the Local Government Code of

1991. The law also mandates that segregation and

15
collection of solid waste shall be conducted at

the barangay level while collection of non-

recyclable materials and special wastes shall be

the duty of the municipality or city (Gequinto,

2016).

Another possible solution to solid waste

management is valorization which can also address

other environmental problems such as the depletion

of natural resources.

These solutions enumerated will only be

possible with the presence of good governance,

active participation of the people of the country,

and the cooperation of all constituents and

agencies in the Philippines.

(Yoada R.) Waste poses a threat to public

health and the environment if it is not stored,

collected, and disposed of properly. The

perception of waste as an unwanted material with

16
no intrinsic value has dominated attitudes towards

disposal.

(Idris A.) Many cities in developing Asian

countries face serious problems in managing solid

wastes. The annual waste generation increases in

proportion to the rises in population and

urbanization.

CHAPTER III

Research Design

17
This study utilizes a rating scale

design, incorporating differential and

correlational methods within the descriptive

design framework. These design choices were deemed

suitable as the objective of the study is to

assess the level of waste management practices

among Grade 10 students.

Participants

The participants in this study are Grade

10 students. The selection of Grade 10 students is

based on the objective of assessing their waste

management practices. The chapter will provide

details on the sample size and selection process

to ensure a representative group of students for

obtaining accurate and meaningful results.

CHAPTER IV

Results and Discussions

Teaching students about waste reduction,

recycling, and composting instills a sense of

22
environmental responsibility from a young age. By

reducing waste generation and promoting recycling,

schools can significantly decrease their ecological

footprint and contribute to conserving natural

resources and protecting ecosystems.

CHAPTER V

Summary

Efficient waste management practices, such as

recycling and composting, can lead to cost savings

23
for schools. By diverting waste from landfills,

schools can reduce waste disposal fees and

potentially generate revenue from selling

recyclable materials.

Findings

Waste management programs provide valuable hands-

on learning opportunities for students to

understand the environmental impact of waste, the

importance of resource conservation, and the

principles of sustainability. These programs can

be integrated into various subjects, including

science, geography, mathematics, and social

studies, enhancing the overall educational

experience

Conclusions

24
By encouraging waste reduction, recycling, and

composting practices in schools, students develop

sustainable habits that they can carry into their

homes and communities. These practices help foster

a culture of environmental stewardship and

responsible citizenship

Recommendations

It shows that statements with a median ranking of

3 and a rank of 1 are considered highly important

or effective in waste management, while those with

a median ranking of 2 and a rank of 8 are still

significant but might be perceived as slightly

less crucial. Overall, the table highlights the

importance of various waste management practices

and their potential impact on reducing pollution

and promoting environmental sustainability.
