POKHARA UNIVERSITY

Level: Bachelor Semester: Fall Year : 2013

Programme: BE Full Marks: 100
Course: Sanitary Engineering Pass Marks: 45
Time : 3hrs.

Candidates are required to give their answers in their own words as far
as practicable.
The figures in the margin indicate full marks.
Attempt all the questions.

1. a) If you were appointed as a sanitary engineer, how would you 6

determine quantity of storm water for a highly populated sub- urban
area? What type of limitations exists in storm water quantity
determination for such area? Discuss in detail.
b) Design the diameter of sewer in combined system of sewerage with 9
the following data if sewer to be run full at the time of maximum
flow:
i. Area of catchments = 24 hectors
ii. Population = 19000
iii. Rate of water supply = 135 lpcd with peak factor = 2.7 and
80% conversion to sanitary sewage
iv. Time of entry and time of flow = 5 minutes and 17 minutes
respectively
v. Impermeability factor = 0.48
vi. Velocity of flow = 300 cm/sec.
2. a) For a domestic sewage having BOD5 of 300mg/l at 20⁰C, calculate 8
BOD1 at 15⁰C. Assume k as 0.18/day at 20⁰C.
b) Briefly discuss about self purification process of water bodies 7
including oxygen sag curve.
3. a) What type of system is followed in your locality for management of 6
solid waste? Briefly describe about sanitary landfill.
b) Calculate the effluent BOD of a two stage trickling filter with the 9
following data. Flow = 5000m3/day, BOD after primary treatment =
250mg/l. Volume of filter 1 = 650m 3, volume of filter 2 = 350m 3 and
recirculation for both filters = 2.

4. a) Design an oxidation pond for treating domestic sewage from a 8
community having 100 populations with water supply 200 lpcd.
Permissible organic loading for the pond is 300kg/ha/day. BOD in the
influent is 300mg/l. Required BOD reduction in the pond is 90%.
Assume other data if required.
b) With flow diagram, discuss briefly about the principle of Activated 7
Sludge Process.
5. a) Describe the aerobic and anaerobic digestion processes with neat 8
sketch. Mention differences between one stage and two stage sludge
digestors.
b) Design a septic tank and sook pit to dispose the sewage generated 7
from a household of 10 persons. Consider probable peak discharge of
18 liters/minute. The cleaning period of septic tank is 3 years. The
inflation rate of soil is 500 liters/m2day.
6. a) Describe partially combined system of sewerage with merits and 6
demerits.
b) What are the stages of construction of sewer lines? Enlist and discuss 9
about testing of sewer lines for straightness and leakage parameters.
7. Write short notes on: (Any two) 2×5
a) Sludge drying bed.
b) Sewage Sickness
c) Drop manhole.
