Solve the following problems. This will serve as your reviewer in the next exam. Copy the
problems and write your solution like in previous exercises.
1. A force of 160 N making an angle of 300 above the horizontal is applied to an object
which moves across the horizontal surface a distance of 20 m. Find the work done by the
force.
2. A box weighing 80 N is pulled along a horizontal surface by a force of 15 N which is
directed at 200 above the horizontal. If the box started from rest and the coefficient of
friction is 0.15, find the kinetic energy and the velocity of the box after it has travelled a
distance of 10 m.
3. A stone weighing 5 N is thrown vertically upward with a velocity of 39.2 m/s. Find (a) its
potential and kinetic energy 2 seconds after it is thrown and (b) the maximum height
attained applying conservation of energy principles.
4. A 1 kg block slides down a plane which is 4 m long with its upper end of the height of 2
m from the floor. If the block reaches the floor with a velocity of 2 m/s,(a) what is the
work done by friction, and (b) what is the average frictional parts?
5. Neglecting friction, how much work must be done to increase the speed of a car from 72
kph to 144 kph in a distance of 200 m if the car has a mass of 2000 kg? What is the
average accelerating force being exerted by the engine on the car?
6. The bob of swinging pendulum has a speed of 2 m/s when it is at its lowest point. The
bob has a mass of 5 kg and the wire is 1.0 m long. 9a) What maximum height will the
bob attain? (b) What potential energy at the highest position? (c) What angle with the
vertical does the cord make when the bob is at its highest position?
7. A water storage tank contains 4000 m3 of water (density = 100 kg/m3) and is at an
average height of 20 m above the ground. How much work is required to fill the tank if
the water is to be pumped up from ground level?
8. An electron is travelling at a speed of 1000 km/s. A constant retarding force in a distance
of 20 cm. If the mass of the electron is 9.1 x 10-31 kg, what is the retarding force.
9. A bullet of mass 2 g is travelling with a velocity of 300 m/s. It hits a block of wood and
penetrates 8 cm. What is the average resisting force on the bullet.
10. A 2000 kg car is coasting along a level road at a speed of 72 km/hr and then starts to
coast uphill to the top of the hill which is 15 m higher than the level road. Neglecting
friction, find the speed of the car at the top of the hill.
11. A 3200 kg car goes up 30 ascending road with a uniform speed of 45 kph. (a) Find the
power developed by the motor. (b) Neglecting frictional forces, find the work done in 5
sec.
12. A box weighing 8 N is projected up a plane which makes and angle of 300 with the
horizontal with velocity of 3.3 m/s. If the box comes to rest after moving up 70 cm up
the plane, find (a) the coefficient of kinetic friction and (b) the amount of energy
converted to heat.
13. A 10 kg block starts from rests and slides down a plane which makes 35 0 with the
horizontal. If the velocity after travelling 4 m along the plane is m/s, find the coefficient
of friction.
14. A string is fastened to a 5 kg block at rest on a table top. The spring is passed over a
pulley at the edge of the table and a 4 kg block is suspended from the end of the string.
If the coefficient of friction between the table top and the block is 0.10, find the kinetic
energy of each mass after release and after travelling 60 cm.
15. A 4 kg block is projected along a horizontal frictionless surface and compresses a
horizontal elastic spring 4 meters. If the spring constant is 10 N/m, what is the velocity of
the block at the instant of collision?
16. An elevator of mass 1800 kg rises 40 m in 10 seconds, What is the power developed?
17. A 24,000 kg rocket takes off from launching pad and acquires a vertical velocity of 14,000
km/hr when it is an altitude of 30 km. Find the its (a) potential energy (b) kinetic energy.
If it reached this altitude in 15 minutes, what is the average power developed.
18. A constant force acts on a body of mass 4 kg and changes speed from 4 m/s to 8 m/s in a
distance of 20 m. Find the force. Ans. 4.8 N
