Early Primary Mathematics

Course Description & Schemes of Work

Course Description
This mathematics course is designed for early primary learners and focuses on developing
fundamental numeracy skills. The curriculum introduces students to numbers up to 10,
basic addition and subtraction, and the concept of number bonds. Learners will also explore
ordinal numbers, compare lengths and weights, and apply problem-solving skills through a
variety of exercises and review sections. The course emphasizes hands-on learning, visual
understanding, and progressive skill-building to prepare students for more advanced
mathematical concepts.

Schemes of Work

Numbers to 10
 **Objectives:**

Recognize and name numbers 1 to 10; Count objects accurately up to 10; Write numbers
correctly.

numbers to quantities.

 **Assessment:**

Oral counting; Worksheet matching and writing tasks.

Number Bonds
 **Objectives:**

Understand number bonds up to 10; Identify pairs of numbers that make up a total; Apply
number bonds to simple problems.

 **Activities:**

Use of counters to make pairs; Fill-in-the-blank bond charts; Drawing and coloring number
bond stories.

 **Assessment:**

Written bond problems; Oral quizzes with objects.

Addition

 **Activities:**

Line-up games; Ordinal number coloring sheets; Arranging picture cards.

 **Assessment:**

Matching ordinal numbers to pictures; Oral answers during group tasks.

Length
 **Objectives:**

Compare lengths using longer/shorter; Measure objects using non-standard units.

 **Activities:**

Measure classroom items using string or paper clips; Draw and compare different line
lengths; Sorting objects by size.
 **Assessment:**

Practical measurement tasks; Draw and label exercises.

Weight
 **Objectives:**
