1. Find the row space, column space and null space of the matrix

u1 = (1, 2, −1, 3), u2 = (2, 4, 1, −2), u3 = (3, 6, 3, −7)

w1 = (1, 2, −4, 11), w2 = (2, 4, −5, 14).

Let U = span(ui ) and W = span(wi ) be the row spaces of two sets of vectors. Prove
that U = W

3. Show that {1, (x − 1), (x − 1)(x − 2)} is a basis of P2 [x] and that

W = {p(x) ∈ P2 [x] | p(1) = 0}

is a subspace of P2 [x]. Find the dimension of W .

5. Let {u, v, w} be a basis for the vector space R3 . Prove that the sets {u+v, v+w, w+u}

6. Consider a vector space R3 and the set S = {v1 , v2 , v3 , v4 } where

v1 = (−1, 0, 1), v2 = (−1, 1, 2), v3 = (1, 2, 0), v4 = (3, 1, 2).

Prove that B = {v1 , v2 , v3 } is the maximal Linear independent subset of S.

7. In Q3 (Q), let W1 , W2 be the subspaces spanned by {(1, 0, −1), (2, 1, 4)} and
{(−1, 2, 2), (2, 2, −1), (3, 0, −3), (2, −1, 2)} respectively. Find the basis and dimension
of (i) W1 (ii) W2 (iii) W1 + W2 . Also find the dimension of W1 ∩ W2 .

8. If W1 and W2 be the subspaces of R5 (R) generated by


(1, 3, −2, 2, 3), (1, 4, −3, 4, 2) 1, 32 , − 12 , −1, 92 and (1, 3, 0, 2, 1), (1, 5, −6, 6, 3) 1, 52 , 23 , 1, 12 .
   

Find the dimensions of


(i) W1
(ii) W2
(iii) W1 + W2
(iv) W1 ∩ W2 .

9. Show that for any linearly independent vectors u, v, w in a vector space, the vectors
u + v, u − v, u − 2v + w are also linearly independent.
