Title:
Amendment 3 to IEC 60287-1-1 Ed.1.0: Electric cables – Calculation of the current rating – Part 1-
1: Current rating equations (100 % Load factor) and calculation of losses - General
(Titre) :
Introductory note
This amendment has been prepared by WG 19 of TC 20. They ask National Committees to note the following
information about the proposals.
    - The revision to the symbols is needed because of changes introduced by this amendment.
    - The change on page 33 is editorial.
    - The new text on page 35 is to introduce equations for the calculation screen temperature so that screen
resistance at operating temperature can be calculated.
    - The second change on page 35 is editorial, to remove the 'points' from the equation.
    - The change on page 41 is to introduce Note 3 that covers eddy current losses for cables with copper wire
            screens.
    - The modification to the equation on page 45 is to provide a more precise equation, the existing equation is
an over simplification which gives pessimistic results for situations where p or q ≠ 1. Also the default
values given for λ' 1 are not realistic for modern designs of cable.
    - The new text on page 49 is to introduce equations for the calculation armour temperature so that armour
resistance at operating temperature can be calculated.
    - The new text is intended to be an editorial improvement and the new equation for H 3 corrects an over
simplification that was in the original work published in the 1930s.

Insert the following new text at the end of clause 2.3 on page 35
The formulae given in this section use the resistance of the sheath or screen at its maximum
operating temperature. The maximum operating temperature of the sheath or screen is given
by:
θ sc = θ c − ( I 2 R + 0,5Wd )T1 (°C)
Where
θ sc is the temperature of the cable sheath or screen (°C).
Because the temperature of the sheath or screen is a function of the current, I, an iterative
method is used for the calculation.
The resistance of the sheath or screen at its maximum operating temperature is given by:
R s = R so [1 + α 20 (θ sc − 20 )] (Ω/m)
Where
R so is the resistance of the cable sheath or screen at 20 °C (Ω/m).
2.3.2 Three single-core cables in flat formation, with regular transposition, sheaths bonded
at both ends of an electrical section
Replace the existing equation for X 1 with the following equation:
              ⎧ ⎛s ⎞⎫
= 2 ω10 −7 ln ⎨ 2 3 2 ⎜ ⎟⎬
              ⎩ ⎝d ⎠⎭

2.3.6.1 Eddy-current losses
Replace the existing second NOTE with the following 3 notes:
                                                                     (β1t s )4
Note 1 For lead-sheathed cables, g s can be taken as unity and can be neglected.
                                                                    12 × 10 12
Note 2 For aluminium sheathed cables both terms may need to be evaluated when sheath diameter is greater
than about 70 mm or the sheath is thicker than usual.
Note 3 For cables with a wire screen and an equalising tape, or foil screen over the wires, the thickness of the
screen should be taken as the thickness of a tube having the same total cross-sectional area and mean diameter
as the wire screen.

2.3.6.2 Circulating current losses
60287-1-1 Amend. 3 Ed1/CD © IEC –4– 20/750/CD
Replace the existing equation with the following equation:
                                             p ² + q ² + 1 − p − pq − q
                                                    ( p + q + 1)²
Delete the final paragraph of this clause:
Where lengths of the minor sections are not known, it is recommended that the value of λ' 1
based on experience with carefully installed circuits, be:
λ' 1 = 0,03 for cables laid direct, and
λ' 1 = 0,05 for cables installed in ducts.
and replace it with;
Where lengths of the minor sections are not known p should be set to 1 and q to 1.2, this
gives a value of 0,004.
Page 49
2.4 Loss factor for armour, reinforcement and steel pipes
Insert the following new text at the end of clause 2.4
The formulae given in this section use the resistance of the armour at its maximum operating
temperature. The maximum operating temperature of the armour is given by:
           {(             ) [ (              )      ] }
θ ar = θ c − I 2 R + 0 ,5Wd T1 + I 2 R 1 + λ1 + Wd nT2 (°C)
Where
θ ar is the temperature of the armour (°C).
Because the temperature of the armour is a function of the current, I, an iterative method is
used for the calculation.
The resistance of the armour at its maximum operating temperature is given by:
           [ (
R A = R Ao 1 + α 20 θ ar − 20 )] (Ω/m)
Where
R Ao is the resistance of the armour at 20°C (Ω/m).
Where the equivalent resistance of sheath and armour in parallel is used it is sufficiently
accurate to assume that both components are at the operating temperature of the armour and
to use an average value for the temperature coefficient of the materials.

2.4.2.1 Single-core lead sheathed, armoured, cables - steel wire armour bonded to sheath at
        both ends
Replace the existing first two paragraphs with the following two new paragraphs:
The following method does not take into account the possible influence of the surrounding
media, which may be appreciable in particular for cables laid under water. The method is
intended for installations where spacing between cables is large (i.e. 10 m or more). It gives
values for the sheath and armour losses that are usually higher than the actual ones, so that
ratings are on the safe side. It should be noted that the hottest part of the cable route may be
the on-shore section where both the losses and mutual heating may be high.
Where the influence of the surrounding media can be ignored, e.g. in air, the method may be
used for any spacing between cables.
Replace the existing equation for H 3, on page 53, by the following equation:
                                                                   ⎛df ⎞ −6
                                                  ( )
                                        H 3 = 0,4 µ t cos 2 β − 1 ⎜⎜ ⎟10
                                                                          ⎟
                                                                   ⎝ da ⎠
Note: H 3 is taken as zero for spaced wires.
