▩ MATHEMATICIANS ▩

Pythagoras Greek mathematician:

Major Works:
Pythagoras is most famous for his concept of geometry. It is believed that he was first to
establish that the sum of the angles of a triangle is equal to two right angles and that for a right-
angled triangle the square on the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares on the other
two sides.
Although the last mentioned theorem was already discovered by the Babylonians, Pythagoras
was first to prove it. It is also believed that he devised the tetractys, the triangular figure of four
rows which add up to ten, which according to him, was the perfect number.

Blaise Pascal – French:

Major Works:
His two most famous works date from this period: the Lettres provinciales and the Pensées,
the former set in the conflict between Jansenists and Jesuits. The latter
contains Pascal's Wager, known in the original as the Discourse on the Machine, a probabilistic
argument for God's existence.

Srinivasa Ramanujan - Indian

Awards: Fellow of the royal society.
Born in the same village surroundings as Ramanujan, he went to study at Cambridge and
became a leading astrophysicist of the 20th century, finally being awarded the Nobel Prize in
1983.
K. Ranganatha Rao
An award by the principle.
Headmaster.

Erastothenes Greek
Works: Sieve of Eratosthenes: algorithm steps for primes below 121 (including optimization of starting from
the prime's square).
One of the most remarkable things done by Eratosthenes included his effort to
calculate the Earth's circumference without leaving the comfortable perimeters of
Egypt. Eratosthenes also discovered an algorithm to determine prime numbers which
is known as the Sieve of Eratosthenes. He also invented the armillary sphere.

Leonhard Euler
Major works:
Euler invented the calculus of variations including its most well-known result, the Euler–Lagrange
equation.
Euler also pioneered the use of analytic methods to solve number theory problems. In doing so, he
united two disparate branches of mathematics and introduced a new field of study, analytic number
theory.
Euler proved Newton's identities, Fermat's little theorem, Fermat's theorem on sums of two squares,
and made distinct contributions to the Lagrange's four-square theorem. He also invented the totient
function φ(n) which assigns to a positive integer n the number of positive integers less than n and
coprime to n. Using properties of this function he was able to generalize Fermat's little theorem to
what would become known as Euler's theorem.
Ptolemy _ Greco Roman
Major works: Claudius Ptolemy wrote the Almagest, the work that defined astronomy for over
1,000 years.
The Almagest included a catalogue of over a thousand stars, recording their positions,
constellations, and relative brightness’s: and a mathematical model predicting the movements of the
planets.
The predictive power of Ptolemy’s planetary model was unsurpassed for almost 1,500 years.

Aryabhata _ Indian
Major works:
Shakuntala Devi Indian
Carl Friedrich Gauss
Leonardo Fibonacci Italian
