Digital Literacy and Skills for
21st Century Educators
Education is the fundamental tool to progress. In this modern world, the educators are required to
be aware of digital literacy. The world, within short span of time, has completely transformed
digitally. Digital literacy is must for all educators and learners in order to keep pace with the
growing world. In the 21st century, the modes of education have been changed as compared to past
two centuries. We are living in the world where we have to interact with digital gadgets; without
them, it is impossible to live progressively.
According to several research studies, the challenging issue being faced by the educators, is
adaptability. They lack in handling new circumstances. In this era, technology is necessary for
better education. For this, the educators need to have sufficient knowledge of technology. The
educators can bring innovative approach with the help of technology. As during Covid, the
available mode of providing education is only technology such as, online meetings, LMS, Google
Classroom, Edmodo and many other digital resources. Further, with the help of these online
resources, the educators can, no matter the on-campus education is on or off, collaborate and
communicate with one another. In addition, they must also have skills to record and edit audios
and video clips. They can affectively teach and help the learners by sharing these digital contents
with them, which can further enhance their learning. Now, think if the educators are not digitally
literate then how they can face such situations. So, it’s, therefore, necessary to be digitally literate
so that they can be able to adapt new situations with various learning platforms. In this way, they
can utilize the virtual mode of learning. Apart from this, these competencies can’t be accomplished
without proper trainings and some other professional development programs. It’s the responsibility
of the education system or the policy makers to take every possible step to aware them digitally so
that they can play their role effectively. For this, they have to facilitate them by arranging seminars,
training sessions where they can interact with some essential softwares, digital tools and gadgets
to meet the competencies.
Besides, they must also have command on developing PLNs where they can professionally grow
as well as learn by contacting with different educators around the globe. These can be very helpful
and useful platforms for them not only professionally, but also educationally. Resultantly, it’s
beneficial for both educators as well as learners.
To conclude, the educators and learners can’t grow and further develop unless they are aware of
the use of technology or digital platforms in education. At any cost, they have to be digitally literate
so that they be able to keep pace with the digitally flourishing world. It’s essential to have
cognizance to utilize the digital world to effectively teach and learn.
