The horizontal rows of the periodic table are called _____________________.

The vertical columns of the periodic table are called _____________________.

Elements in the same ____________________ tend to have similar characteristics.

Label the periodic table according to the instructions below.

• Draw the “staircase” in on the periodic table below.

• Elements on the left of the staircase are usually (metals / nonmetals).
• Elements on the right of the staircase are usually (metals / nonmetals).
• Label the arrows “metals” or “nonmetals.”
• There is one important exception to the locations of metals and
nonmetals on the periodic table. Circle that exception and label whether
it is a metal or a nonmetal.

Elements and the Periodic Table
Lesson Summary
All matter is made of tiny balls called atoms. Sometimes, the atoms are all packed right
next to each other, and sometimes small groups of atoms are connected together to
make molecules. Atoms are the building blocks of the world around us. Just like there
are different kinds of building blocks, there are different kinds of atoms. There are
oxygen atoms, and hydrogen atoms, and chlorine atoms and many other. These
different types of atoms are called elements. There are over 100 elements in the
universe.

The elements are arranged on a chart called the Periodic Table. Each element has a
square on the table, and the square contains the element name and the element
symbol, which is an abbreviation. The first letter of an element symbol is always
capitalized, and the second letter is lowercase: chlorine’s symbol is Cl, not CL.

Some element symbols are straightforward abbreviations for the element name, like O
for oxygen, or Ne for neon. Others don’t match as well, like Cu for copper, or Na for
sodium. These element symbols that don’t match are usually abbreviations for words
from other languages. It is very important to learn the names and symbols for
common elements that come up over and over in chemistry.

The periodic table organizes elements into horizontal rows and vertical columns. The
rows are called periods, and the columns are called groups. Elements that are in the
same group tend to have similar characteristics and tend to behave the same way.

The periodic table also sorts elements into two main categories: metals and
nonmetals. There is usually a “staircase” drawn on the periodic table. Elements to the
left of this staircase and usually metals, and elements to the right are nonmetals. One
critical exception is hydrogen, which is on the left side of the table but is a nonmetal.

The difference between metals and nonmetals is very important in chemistry. Most
people know many metal elements, like copper, zinc, and gold. But there are also metal
elements that may be surprising, like sodium, potassium, and calcium. Some common
nonmetal elements include hydrogen, carbon, oxygen, nitrogen, chlorine, and neon.
When you’re learning the most common elements, it is essential to learn whether
the elements are metals or nonmetals.
