Introduction:
In everyday life, we use our understanding of physics to assist us with everyday tasks. From
knowing where to apply the right force to make it easier to push an object, to creating a closed
circuit by plugging out phones to charge. One very important tool that has helped us greatly are
springs. We use springs to help us in many aspects of our lives, from opening a door, to
suspension systems in our cars, we have them everywhere. In extension, springs all follow one
generic principle, Hooke’s law.
Hooke’s Law is a term in physics which states that the force that is acted upon a spring, depends
on the displacement of the spring from its original value x 0, multiplied by the negative spring
coefficient, a number that represents the stiffness or elasticity of the specific spring. This law
can be presented by the following equation: FH= -kx
Hooke’s law allows us to determine many things. We use them to determine how much weight
a mattress can hold or utilizing different springs in the gym to have equipment of various
difficulties
Hooke’s law was discovered by Robert Hooke in 1660. During those ages, it was common for
scientists to be exploring the properties of materials, and more specifically elasticity. Hooke was
no different. The previous scientists had observed that materials would stretch when a force
was applied to them, but they never knew what the relationship between force and
deformation was. As such, Hooke took it upon himself, to figure it out with a series of
experiments. As such, he used an apparatus in order to hang springs and other materials
vertically, and specific weights were placed on one end. Afterwards, Hooke carefully measured
the displacement of the weights and figured out at there is a linear relationship between the
displacement of the string and the force acted on it. As such he stated famously: “As the
extension, so the force”
nowadays Hooke’s law is considered to be the fundamentals of mechanical physics, Taught by
schools worldwide.
