THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

A. RATIONALE OF THE STUDY

The classroom environment conditions affect occupants’ health, attitudes, motivations

and general well-being. Classroom surroundings have direct effects on teachers and students

and ultimately on academic outcomes ( Ryan & Deci 2017 ). Active and effective insights start

with appropriate learning experiences and materials that stimulate students to advance their

thinking ( Piaget 1919 ). Class furniture design plays an important role in enhancing learning.

Space management combined with high organization is what mainly works to enhance

effectiveness in educational settings, and well-designed chairs significantly contribute to an

even more effective and comfortable environment.

According to Kholisah et al., 2024 , lack of classroom space is a problem that could

have an impact on students' learning focus and their education. The study findings showed

that students' learning process is hindered due to limited and messy workspace and

environment.

Learners that occupy small rooms are limited by space, which is why multipurpose

furniture is necessary. This study is conducted to face the problem by equipping the chairs with

storage. It is a strategic solution that thinks about both the current needs of students and the

prolonged improvements in school spaces. With this style of chair, students can focus more on

the class and feel more organized.

 The 2024 study by Kholish, et al., emphasized the significance of having an organized

and comfortable working space to result in effective student performance. Nevertheless, the

study did not delve into the psychosomatic and behavioral relevance to the classroom

environment.

This study aims to explore the limited and messy workspace challenges confronting the

Grade 12 students in ACT Bulacao and to assess their overall learning experience. By

investigating these aspects, the research presents beneficial insights that can lead to

enhancement of surroundings and improvements of materials. This investigation is essential

for gaining a more complete and overarching understanding of classroom environment

challenges encountered by Grade 12 students.

In the context of timeliness, this study shows up at an essential time when schools are

seeing an increase in student enrollment and experiencing a lack of classroom space. More

students bring more bags and learning materials overloaded into the same room, which may

lead to clutter and discomfort in the room. Through creating chairs that serve the dual purpose

of both seating and storage, schools can handle this issue effectively.

B. THEORETICAL BACKGROUND

The study is supported by the theory of Environmental Psychology, as pioneered by

Pronshansky in (1950s-60s), emphasizes the significant relationship between the physical

environment and human behavior. In this context, the improved storage provided by the

proposed chairs is expected to create a more organized, clean and comfortable learning space

for the students. This, in turn could lead to a cut back of students stress and improved focus,

indirectly impacting the learning end results. His theory suggests that a well-designed physical

environment can positively influence the students behavior and their academic outcome

performances.

Environmental Psychology, as pioneered by Pronshansky in the mid 1950s and 60s,

emphasizes the significant relationship between the physical environment and human

behavior. This field explores how the setting will influence our thoughts, feelings, and actions.

It considers factors like noise levels and spatial design. Understanding these impacts is a key

to creating a better environment for the pupils.

Activity Theory, was developed by Vygotsky (1978), where this focuses on the

interaction between the students productivity, actions, learning processes, and the

environment itself. The field highlights the social and cultural context of learning. Learning is

viewed as active knowledge construction, and not inactive learning.

In addition, the Activity Theory by Vygotsky (1978), where it provides a supportive

perspective by focusing on the dynamic relationship between the students actions, their

conscious learning processes, and the environment around them. The design of the chairs

becomes a significant factor within this framework as it mirrors the pupils' delivery. A

thoughtfully and thoroughly designed chair will support and help the students productivity,

study habits and workflow, facilitating focused learning without any alterations. On the other

hand, a poorly designed chair could introduce limits and restrict the learning process, which

would hinder the students performance by the thought of a messy environment engulfing the

learner. Therefore, evaluating the chair design requires a deep consideration on how it

effectively supports or obstructs the students' learning activities within the classroom

environmental setting.

C. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This proposal aims to present for the mass production of chairs with a storage

compartment for students in Asian College of Technology

Specifically, it sought to answer the following questions:

1. How does the introduction of chairs affect students' focus in productivity during

activities inside the classroom?

2. What impact does the use of chairs with storage compartments have on student

organization and classroom cleanliness compared to traditional chairs?

3. How does having chairs with storage compartments influence students' sense of

responsibility and independence in managing their materials?

D. SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

The primary goal of this study is to suggest creating and producing chairs with built in

storage areas, for grade 12 students at the Asian College of Technology. The research will

investigate the practicality of producing these chairs while taking into account aspects such as

choice of materials and suitability, for classroom settings. This project will prioritize meeting the

requirements of grade 12 students of ACT with a goal to enhance the learning environment

through space utilization and encouraging organization skills development.

 The use of this chair equipped with built in storage compartments aims to improve the

learning atmosphere for students by offering an efficient way to store their items and academic

materials in an organized manner while reducing clutter in the classroom environment. The

setup not only allows students to access their belongings easily but also creates a productive

workspace without the hassle of carrying bulky bags around throughout the day.

The study will be put forward at the Asian College of Technology, specifically the

academic year 2024-2025. By limiting to this specific timeframe, it ensures that the data

collected is latest and relevant to the current grade 12 learners organization and space

aspects.

E. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The significance of the study stems from its capacity to enhance school environment,

improve classroom equipment, promote student well-being, and provide factual evidence-

based insights for the betterment of the classroom facility in Grade 12 students. Students,

teachers, and the larger educational community are all affected in significant ways. The

research’s findings can inform and improve classroom environment management and

students’ organization skills, enabling educators and administrators to tailor instructions,

methods, resources, solutions and support to address the certain challenges that the Grade 12

students face with limited workspace.

Students. These chairs can help reduce clutter by providing a discreet place to store

items like notebooks, pens, or other personal belongings, promoting tidiness and organization.

The built-in storage enables quick and easy access to stored items.

 Teachers. A clutter-free environment has been linked to lower stress and increased

productivity. These chairs contribute to creating organized and calming spaces. The study

could explore how multifunctional furniture can foster better social interaction by reducing

clutter and improving overall organization, making spaces feel more open and inviting.

Parents. Their children can practice organization, managing and cleaning to prevent a

messy workspace or environment. The parents can also be at ease with assurance that the

belongings of their children are secured and stored well.

School Administrators. The study’s findings can help school administrators make

alternative solutions and how to provide students well-being support services. Having a clear

understanding of how essential a clutter-free and comfortable workspace can help

administrators create a welcoming and inclusive learning environment that supports student

success.

Future Researchers. The study’s findings can guide the creation of interventions and

best practices meant to encourage student participation and academic achievement in a

variety of learning environments. The study adds to the corpus knowledge already available

and offers insightful information for further research.

 F. DEFINITION OF TERMS

Proposal is a formal document that gives a plan for a project, service, or product. It's

like a persuasive argument that aims to convince someone about a project idea and offer.

Mass production is a manufacturing process where a company produces more

products.

Chair with Storage Compartment is a chair that has a storage compartment. Chair

storage compartments are made to offer safe and practical storage for a variety of goods. Both

usability and the overall aesthetics of the design depend heavily on the access mechanism

chosen.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter presents the relevant literature and studies that the researcher considered

in strengthening the importance of the present study. It also presents the synthesis of the art to

fully understand the research for better comprehension of the study.

THE IMPORTANCE OF STORAGE

From jason.l,( 2023 ) the importance of having a well-organized classroom is discussed

in the article. It states that a well arranged classroom promotes proper involvement of the

students, improved their focus, and more effective learning to the learners. The article offers a

couple of classroom tips, including the use of a storage box, specified areas for certain

supplies, a point system for returning products and daily trash removal. In short, the article

centers on the idea that everyone can learn more easily, comfortably, safely, and enjoyably in

a well-organized classroom.

Another article by Shehata ( 2024 ) the research paper talks about how classroom

settings are changing to keep up with the new era of technology and teaching methods. It

looks at both physical spaces like traditional classrooms and libraries. It also considers how

the shifting is impacting the designs of the storage solutions within these learning

environments.

According to The Olpin Group ( 2022 ) specializes in storage solutions for schools. They

offer a variety of options to help schools organize their spaces and create better learning

environments. These include modular furniture for more customizable cabinets and

workbenches for classrooms and labs and foldable furniture for space-saving desks and tables

for multi-purpose rooms. With these options suggested by the group, we can begin to tidy up

our clutters.

Cost Cutters UK ( 2024 ) ( Maintaining an organised and well-stocked classroom is

essential for creating a productive and engaging learning environment. When your classroom

supplies are neatly organised and easily accessible, you can focus on delivering high-quality

lessons without the distraction of constantly searching for the right materials. Moreover, an

organised system helps you keep track of your inventory, ensuring that you never run out of

essential items.

Randy Fielding ( 2022 ) states that separate storage compartments are a hassle as it

takes up space, rather than using long banks of lockers in hallways, the smaller grouping

invites learners to connect with each other. There is no need to eliminate student storage in

schools because rows of full-height lockers aren’t being used well. Instead, provide a variety

of storage elements that build relationships and enhance individual well-being. A varied and

personalized approach to student storage has the additional benefit of allowing for more wall

surfaces, freeing up space for writable surfaces, student displays, and increased transparency

using interior windows.

 Yourthurrock ( 2024 ) Efficient storage is crucial in educational institutions to ensure that

both students and staff can access the resources they need without unnecessary clutter.

Schools often face the challenge of limited space, which can lead to disorganisation and

inefficiency. Proper storage solutions can significantly improve the learning environment by

creating orderly, accessible spaces that enhance the overall educational experience.

Nasr Al-Hinai, et al. ( 2024 ) Classroom chair is considered as an important element

for students to improve comfort and concentration in a study environment.

CLASSROOM ENVIRONMENT

According to Gulzar Ahmed, et al. ( 2024 ) classroom environment plays a leading role

in uplifting students’ learning and achieving national educational goals in due course of time.

The aim of this present study was to explore the effects of the classroom environment for

improving students’ learning at secondary level and recommend measures for its further

improvements.

In another study by Barry Fraser and Jill Aldridge in ( 2021 ), learning environments–

involving their physical, pedagogical, and psychosocial dimensions–influence students'

learning experiences. The study provided a deeper understanding of the dynamic and complex

intrinsic interrelations of learning environment dimensions over time, addressing previous gaps

in research. It identified and analyzed spaces and practices, educational activities, and

students’ subjective experiences in different learning environments to illustrate how these

multiple elements intersect and influence on the students’ experience.

From Chui’s ( 2023 ) In studies there has been a focus, on enhancing the happiness of

young people, in the classroom by emphasizing the importance of positive school atmospheres

for their mental and emotional well being. Research indicates that a positive and welcoming

classroom setting can greatly boost teenagers’ confidence, help them manage their emotions

and improve their happiness. Important approaches include fostering a sense of community

encouraging connections and providing emotional support through teacher student bonds. In

addition, to that point about mindfulness techniques being tools for promoting well being, in

schools and how autonomy and peer support contribute to academic performance and mental

health in teenagers.

SSC students for education ( 2019 ) Students need to be in classrooms that inspire

them—spaces that are light, airy, and filled with examples of work that they aspire to do. Each

school will have a variety of spacious classroom settings.

STUDENT BEHAVIOR AND MENTAL WELL-BEING

According to Alisson F. Gilmour, Lia E. Sandilos, William V. Pilny, Samantha Schwartz,

and Joseph H. Wehby, this article was conducted to understand the EBD of students in their

respective classrooms. This points out the burnout profiles of students, namely flourishing,

buffered, and struggling.That did not vary to the teacher type but on the teacher's classroom

management skills.

According to Amy L. Green, Stephen Ferrante, Timothy L. Boaz, Krista Kutash, and

Brooke Wheeldon-Reece, the article talks about how early adolescence is the critical point of

development that has various transitions such as social relationships, physical and cognitive

development. Having these changes provides adolescents multiple challenges. Having this

period increases vulnerability to both emotional and behavioral problems, disengagement and

decreased positive peers.

 According to Kirkpatrick, A. J. (2019) This article was conducted to understand if the

learners behavior can have a big impact on their learning. The researchers are examining

students whether their behavior can impact their learning and how it gives bad results on text.

The study also highlights the importance of behavior management to ensure a supportive

environment for every student.

According to school health and wellness. (2023) The article outlines that mental health

issues such as depression are one of the high school students encountered. This kind of

mental health struggle can lead the learners to poor academic outcomes, which can result in

concentration issues. This article also highlights the need for schools to understand mental

health as a critical factor in school activities and gives a solution, such as increasing the

mental health resources, and gives support to students.

According Vtiger Blog (2022) a productive person at work is someone who excels in

various areas of their job. They may have one job and be great at it, or they might work a few

jobs but still get all of them done without sacrificing quality. What matters most is their ability to

maintain a balance between what they want out of work and what others need from them.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

A. RESEARCH DESIGN

This research proposes a design for mass-producing chairs with integrated storage

compartments specifically for students at the Asian College of Technology (ACT). The current

lack of complete storage space for learners is a very significant issue, impacting their

organization and learning environment. This study will use the descriptive research design to

explore the current storage needs and preferences of the present ACT students, and also tell

them the design and its efficiency for creating these specialized chairs.

A descriptive research design is fit for this study because it mainly focuses on

describing the characteristics of the population of the interest (ACT learners) and their storage

needs. This process will involve collecting data through various methods to gain a complete

understanding of the current situation.

B. RESEARCH LOCALE

Campus. This locality is

perceived to have more

productive students

compared to the other localities

in the city. However,

despite this perceived generality, the school community’s struggle inside the classroom is

present. Students face struggles with lack of storage for their belongings while some are stolen

or lost. Uncomfortable and messy workspaces can lead to student malfunction, similar to

losing belongings, it can hinder an individual's performance and progress in learning.

C. RESEARCH RESPONDENTS

In this study project involving 80 individuals chosen with care to gain, in depth

understanding of the importance of chairs equipped with storage spaces in an environment;

they will be classified into categories – 30 students prioritizing chair usage and sharing views

on comfort and storage requirements; 20 faculty members contributing insights on the chairs

influence, on learning ambiance and student attention; 10 administrative staff members; and

20 maintenance staff providing their perspectives as well. The administrative team will provide

insights on the real-world advantages and practical aspects to consider when introducing these

chairs into classrooms.

The research will also gather feedback from 10 maintenance team members to assess

the longevity of the chairs and how easy they are to maintain and produce on a scale

effectively in the school setting. By involving input, from a range of participants with

backgrounds and perspectives, in the research process, we aim to obtain a comprehensive

understanding of how effective the design is. This will help us pinpoint elements that ought to

be integrated into production to cater to the real requirements of both learners and the

institution.

After collecting data from 80 participants and examining it thoroughly we will develop a

plan for creating and distributing chairs that cater to the comfort and storage needs of students

while also fitting within the schools budget constraints and space limitations.

D. SAMPLING PROCEDURE

The researchers will start by asking questions about the product and will provide a

printed survey questionnaire that the researchers will give to 80 grade 12 students from

different strands in Asian College of Technology—Bulacao campus. Offer small rewards for

students participating to motivate them to take part in the research after their class hours.

Stratified random sampling was used by the researchers to ensure that subgroups of the

population were suitably represented. Gather a complete list of grade 12 students from each

strand of the school to form a strata and use a random number generator to select participants

using Slovin's formula with a margin of error of 10%.

E. RESEARCH INSTRUMENT

This research study will be presented through a proposal paper to be provided to the

respondents that would further explain the features and inquiries pertaining to the sustainability

and effectiveness of the project being proposed. This will be elaborated through fifteen (15)

inquiries in a questionnaire presupposing the use of Likert Scale that would measure and

weigh the intensity to which the respondents perceive the proposal.

The questionnaire will consist of questions that shall inquire the benefits, challenges,

necessity, and feasibility of the proposal as aligned with the statement of the problem. This will

be presented in a crosswise bond paper.

F. DATA GATHERING

Upon having the approval of Surveys and Interviews were validated, the number of

copies of the said Survey was multiplied to certain copies. At the same time, a letter of request

to the School Superintendent and to the Concerned School were being prepared.

The letter of request and the Survey copies were formally delivered by the researchers

to the school concerned. It was then explained in detail by researchers on how the surveys

and Interviews are being answered during the delivery. The surveys were retrieved during the

same day. The results of the interviews and surveys were arranged. Then the data were

analyzed and interpreted using the appropriate statistical problem.

G. DATA ANALYSIS

 The results highlight the functional and educational significance of the Storage Chair in

supporting ACT Bulacao students, particularly those in the HUMSS strand. The chair serves

not only as a practical solution for organizing personal belongings but also as a tool that

encourages academic engagement. Students who utilize the Storage Chair report higher levels

of efficiency in managing their materials, leading to increased participation, persistence and

validation in their academic activities. Observations and feedback from HUMSS students

revealed a consistent theme, the chair is seen as a valuable asset for enhancing productivity.

By minimizing clutter and fostering a sense of organization, students experience less

distraction, which positively impacts their focus and academic performances.

The data analysis process involved constant comparison (Birks & Mills, 2011; Urquhart,

2013), allowing the researcher to explore emerging patterns. For instance, many participants

emphasized how the Storage Chair not only saves space but also symbolizes a deeper

commitment to a student friendly and efficient learning environment. By refining initial

observations through interviews, additional themes such as accessibility, ergonomic benefits,

and aesthetic appeal were identified. This iterative process enabled a broader understanding

of how the Storage Chair contributes to the academic journey of HUMSS students at ACT

Bulacao.

H. ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS

Participants in this study will not experience any harm as a result of their participation.

The subjects’ full consent will be sought before the study begins. Furthermore, the

confidentiality of research participants will be protected. Respondents’ voluntary involvement in

the study will be valued highly. Additionally, participants are free to leave the study at any time

if they wish to do so.
