Learning Outcomes: By the end of this lesson, I want my students to:
1. Listen to popular television clipping to decipher the type of letter for the lesson.
2. Explore possible scenarios requiring the use of a Letter of Complaint
3. Examine the different components of the Letter of Complaint
4. Read sample letter and discuss the reasons behind some features of the Letter of Complaint
5. Create a draft of the Letter of Complaint as a class.

Students Previous Knowledge, Gaps: Students would have previously been introduced to
letter writing, and so they should have (at least) a basic understanding. In addition, students
would have been introduced to business letters prior and therefore have a basic understanding
of the format and context in which they are to be written. This lesson will introduce students
to the letter of complaint by providing examples and utilizing collaborative work to show
how the letter is drafted.
Basic Content:
Letter of complaint is a formal letter that is written to address an issue or concern.
Letter of complaint has three main parts
RE (referring to or regarding to )
1) Introduction - This states who you are and why you are writing.
2) The body - This provides the reader with more information so they can respond to
the complaint.
3) Conclusion - What action do you want the reader to take. Offer possible solutions.

Engage: Students will be asked to recall any recent occurrences of a moment that caused
them to become upset of dissatisfied with a product or service.
Volunteers will share their scenarios and state how they dealt with the matter.
Explore: Students will be given three scenarios; for each scenario, the student must suggest
ways of not damaging relationships with the parties involved, but also suggest ways
to maintain or improve these relationships. Simply, students will stay how they will respond.

    a. From the responses given students will be asked to state what they think a letter of
complaint is /when they think it should be written and why.
Scenarios:
1. Your neighbour constantly burns garbage which causes smoke to wreak havoc
on your health, clothes, etc
2. The sewer system in your community is broken, and raw sewage floods your
front gate.
3. Constant disconnection of water supply at your school.
4. Poor service at a restaurant
Explain: With the use of notes or PowerPoint presentation teacher will lead students into
discussion of the definition of the letter of complaint, identifying situations that
require writing a letter of complaint and parts of a letter of complaint.
Teacher will highlight the importance of maintaining a professional and respectful tone.
Elaborate: Students will be given a sample letter in which they will read aloud. Students will
then be given three minutes to identify the three parts of the letter of complaint in the sample
given.
Evaluate: Teacher will allow individual students from each row to offer a line in writing a
letter of complaint to Amazon Supercentre for a faulty blender purchased. Teacher will write
responses on the board to formulate the letter.
Students will be tasked to finish the letter for homework.
