Contingency : STEERING GEAR FAILURE


IMMEDIATE ACTIONS: Check
1.1 Switch to Hand Steering/NFU Tiller if in Auto and attempt to regain control
1.2 Switch to Standby Motor (if not allready running) and attempt to regain control
1.3 Call Master and Duty Engineer
INTIAL RESPONSE and CONSIDERATIONS: Check Team
2.1 Establish S.G.- Bridge comms and Sitrep
2.2 Establish vessels exact position by all available means
2.3 If vessel in immediate danger sound alarm and make PA announcement
2.4 SBE and reduce speed
2.5 Switch to EM Steering, compare gyro repeater and attempt to regain control
2.6 Exhibit NUC/RAM lights/shapes and make any appropriate sound signals
2.7 Update AIS status/GMDSS broadcast (SECURITE/PANPAN/MAYDAY?)
2.8 Prepare and transmit Company Casualty Message or call 24 Hr Telephone
Number, if in immediate danger
2.9 Inform Port Authorities or nearest Coast State
2.10 Commence failure investigation
2.11 Prepare Anchors/Mooring equipment fore and aft
2.12 Assess weather conditions
2.13 Determine proximity of hazards to vessel
2.14 Determine availability of external assistance
CONTINUED RESPONSE and CONSIDERATIONS: Check Team
3.1 Use engines ahead and astern to control vessel heading if possible
3.2 Consider use of Anchors
3.3 Prepare Towing equipment
3.4 Calculate estimated time for repairs
3.5 Obtain tidal data and assess effect on ship
3.6 Obtain weather forecast and assess effect on ship
3.7 Consult ‘Peril at Sea & Salvage’ Control Pub 11.5 for advice and guidance
FURTHER RESPONSE and CONSIDERATIONS: Check Team
4.1 When all facts known agree action plan with Company Emergency Response
Team
4.2 Assess likelihood of further Steering Gear failures
4.3 Consider fatigue effects on staff if extended incident
4.4 Consider catering arrangements if extended incident
4.5 Evidence collecting, inc VDR, photos, written records, etc
4.6 Consider D&A Testing of key personnel
4.7 Lower shapes/turn off lights/sound signals, update AIS and cancel VHF
broadcast when situation resolved
