ASSIGNMENT QUESTION
Note: This assignment consists of TWO parts.
PURPOSE
The purpose of this assignment is to expose students to key areas in psycholinguistics in
English as a Second Language (ESL).
PART I
Read the following article as a prerequisite to Task 1.
Sundram, P. G. P. H., Rangan, P., Sio Ching, H., Baskaran, S., Mohd. Jaya, S. S. and
Krishnan, I. A. (2024) “Analysing Part-of-Speech Errors in Job Interviews Among
Malaysian Fresh Graduates in Malaysia: Implications for Communication
Competence”, Malaysian Journal of Social Sciences and Humanities (MJSSH), 9(3), p.
e002776. doi: 10.47405/mjssh.v9i3.2776.
TASK 1: DISCUSSION ESSAY (30%)
Write a discussion essay (2,000 – 2,500 words) on the topic:
"The Role of Speech Errors and Disfluencies in Understanding the Cognitive Processes of
Speech Production".
Use the research findings from the given article as a basis and include other relevant
sources to support your analysis. Your discussion should cover the following points:
Discuss the significance of speech errors (e.g., spoonerisms, misderivations) and
disfluencies (e.g., hesitations, false starts) as tools for psycholinguistic research.
Use examples to highlight how these phenomena provide insights into the stages
of planning and execution in speech production.
Conclude with your perspective on whether studying these errors can enhance
our understanding of effective communication strategies in diverse linguistic
contexts.
Support your discussion with at least THREE (3) reading materials
(books/journals/newspaper/credible websites). (See Note)
2
Note:
1. Refer to Topics: 3, 4, and 6 (and maybe others) of the HBET1303 Module.
2. Refer to the assignment rubrics as a guide to achieving cohesion and coherence.
3. Avoid plagiarism. You MUST support your essay with related literature. Use the
latest APA format (7th Edition) to write the in-text citations and the reference list.
Click HERE to learn more about the APA in-text citation styles and click HERE to
learn more about writing a reference list according to the APA format (7 th
Edition).
4. The complete reference list should be provided on the last page of your essay.
(30 marks)
TASK 2: A Report (20%)
This task requires you to investigate the role of context in speech perception to 3-4
English speakers with the following specifications:
1) Select 3-4 participants and prepare two sets of audio stimuli:
a. Individual English words read aloud in isolation.
b. The same words are embedded within meaningful sentences.
2) Ask participants to listen to both sets and identify the words they hear.
3) Record their accuracy for isolated words versus contextual sentences.
Once you have all the findings from the investigation, write a report (400-500 words)
including the following:
1. A brief explanation of your methodology (e.g., how the stimuli were created,
participant demographics).
2. Observations on participant performance in isolated vs. contextual conditions.
3. An analysis of the role of context in speech perception, using examples from your
findings.
4. Conclusions about how semantics and syntax influence word recognition during
speech perception.
(20 marks)
3
PART II: Online Class Participation (10%)
Discuss the following topics in the forum and submit proof of your participation in the
online discussions:
1. Do you think exposure to social media slang and informal texting language
influences how children acquire, use and value their first language? Why?
2. How does maintaining one's cultural identity while learning English affect
affective variables like motivation and anxiety? Can embracing multiculturalism
enhance ESL acquisition?
