Breathing and Phrasing Exercises and Concert Piece,
Grade .5

Practice Exercises A, B, and C to work on establishing good habits in:
• Breathing properly (breathing exercises with instruments!)
• Connecting notes while articulating
• Releasing notes at the right time
Apply these concepts while working on and performing “Taking It All In”
• Grade .5, suitable for concerts and pep rallies!
Features:
• Homorhythmic, good working on air with or without
instruments
• Provides an introduction to playing in harmony without
independent rhythms
• Alternate low horn part (doubled Tenor Sax)
• Bells high and low
• Baritone T.C. part
• Can be played using between 2-8 percussionists
• Suggested percussion priority:

Heather Archer Hoefle is an
Indianapolis native who earned her
Bachelor of Science in flute
performance and audio technology
from Indiana University, Bloomington;
educational certification requirements
from DePaul University; Master’s of
Music Education from VanderCook
College of Music and additional
graduate study from VanderCook
College of Music and Troy University.
Her private flute instructors included
Richard Graef of the Chicago
Symphony and reknown international solost Carol Wincenc.
Heather has 30 years of varied experience as a music educator in
Illinois, working as a band director in Orangeville, Chicago, Rockford,
Byron, Harvey, Calumet City, Flossmoor, and at School District 153 in
Homewood, Illinois.
She presented “The Right Music at the Right Time: Finding Music that
Fits Your Beginning Band” at the 77th Annual Midwest Band and
Orchestra Clinic in 2023 and at the ILMEA Conference earlier that
year.
Heather’s commissions include works from beginning band through
high school. She is an active clinician, adjudicator, and honor band
conductor.
She has music published by the Neil A. Kjos Music Company and the
RWS Music Company. Many of her pieces have earned Editor’s
Choice from J.W. Pepper. She has recently retired from teaching full
time to spend more time composing, adjudicating and conducting
clinics. Heather recently moved to the east coast and lives with her
husband, Alpha Dog and Beta Cat in Wilmington, NC.
WTAMU Band Camp & Band Directors' Workshop
“Taking It All In” was commissioned by Band Directors Talk Shop as a gift to the band director community. This work was premiered by
the Junior High Concert Band at the West Texas A&M University Band Camp in 2024 under the direction of Annette Mitchell.
WTAMU Band Camp is a summer camp in Canyon, Texas. Held in July each summer, there are 5 high school bands and 4 middle school
bands, comprised of over 1,000 students.. Attendees to the camp receive high quality instruction during daily band rehearsals, woodwind and
brass/percussion section rehearsals and instrument specific master classes. Students also participate in electives such as jazz band, woodwind
or brass ensemble, rhythmic reading, reed making and more, as well as having the opportunity to take private lessons..
Alongside the student band camp, runs Band Directors’ Workshop.. This is an intensive professional development opportunity for directors
to observe rehearsals, attend in-depth clinics, participate in pedagogical discussions and develop new friendships. Find more information here

West Texas A&M University School of Music
The School of Music at West Texas A&M University (WTAMU). is comprised of 32 full time faculty members, 7 adjunct faculty and
approximately 300 music majors. Students have a selection of excellent performing ensembles in which to participate. All of the ensembles
have made numerous appearances at professional meetings and tour throughout the state. The music faculty members are leaders in their
selected field, receiving awards for their teaching or creative/scholarly activities.
WTAMU, offers six undergraduate degree options in music. Students may select from a major in composition, all-level certification
(preparation to teach in the public schools), therapy, performance, music technology or a degree in music with selective studies in business. At
the graduate level, we offer a master of arts degree in music and a master of music degree in performance.
WTAMU is proud of being small enough that students receive instruction from an expert in their field. Students have regular interaction with
our faculty, both in and out of class. WT is also large enough to offer many opportunities for students to perform, learn and get involved in
college life.
