INTRODUCTION

Detective fiction is a genre of fiction in which an investigator or a detective - either

professional or amateur - investigates a crime, often murder. Detective fiction is one of the
most popular genres in the twentieth century, and increasingly so in the twenty-first. An
estimated one-quarter of books published in the English language today are in the detective
fiction genre. Reasons for this popularity include the following: there is much pleasure
derived from reading this type of fiction; a sense of justice is usually involved; detective
fiction restores a sense of order; it explores the human condition; it demands both
interesting characters and well-crafted plots in intriguing settings; it contains suspense and
mystery; and it functions to comment on society.
True detective fiction shares many of the themes common to all popular fiction, but it
has a unique structure, it is full of compression of information, which includes ellipsis,
asyndeton and break-in-the-narrative.
Compression of information is a process of compacting a text by reducing language
diversity, while maintaining text semantics. As a result, the same ideas can be represented
using a smaller set of words. Compression of information leads to a reduction of
dimensionality, which has a positive influence on efficiency.
The graduation paper aims at revealing the role of the compression of information in
detective stories based on the selected short stories by a British crime writer Agatha
Christie. The stories are the following: “The Adventure of the Cheap Flat”, “The Million
Dollar Bond Robbery”, “The Adventure of the Egyptian Tomb”, “Tape-Measure Murder”,
“The Herb of Death”, “The Kidnapped Prime Minister”, “The Mystery of the Blue Jar”,
“The Witness for the Prosecution”.
To reach the aim of the paper the following tasks are set:
• to present a general notion of detective stories, differentiate types and essential
elements of them;
• to introduce the study of compression of information and its types;
• to analyze the use of the types of compression of information in detective stories.
The work consists of Introduction, two chapters, Conclusion and References.
Introduction presents the aim and the construction of the graduation paper and gives
general knowledge about detective stories and compression of information.
Chapter I “Characteristic Features of Detective Fiction” touches upon the
characteristics of detective stories, revealing all peculiarities of crime fiction, standard rules
and main elements by which the writer creates a mysterious story for the readers.
Chapter II “Types of Compression of Information in Detective Stories” defines the
types of compression of information. The analysis of the use of ellipsis, asyndeton and
break-in-the-narrative in detective short stories is given in the second chapter.
Conclusion sums up the results of the work.
References reflect the list of the authors, books and the articles which were used
while writing the graduation paper.
