Sub.: Sitting of all types of Sign Boards along Road.
During “lM+d xq.koRRkk fujh{k.k ¼lxqfu½ ;k=k”, It has been informed by CE(QC) that Sign
Boards along road had been fixed neither at proper distance not at proper height. Since the
road signs are the means of communication to the road users, especially drivers. Therefore,
the signs shall be so placed that the drivers can recognize them easily and in time. Thereby
it needs to be taken care at the earliest possible.
You are therefore directed to maintain sign boards along road as per IRC : 67- 2022
(Code of practice for road signs), however few key points are enumerated as below:-
1. Signs shall be placed on the left hand side of the road at right angles to the line of travel of
the approaching traffic. For multilane divided roads the signs may be placed on left side of
each carriageway.
2. On all roads with or without kerb and with shoulder, the extreme edge of the ground
mounted sign adjacent to the roadway shall be at a distance of 0.6 m to 3 m from the edge
of earthen shoulder depending upon the available Right of Way.
3. Bottom edge of the lowest sign shall not be less than 2.1 m and not more than 2.5 m above
the shoulder/footpath/kerb, intended to provide minimum headroom for pedestrian.
4. When several signs have to be placed along the same section of road, then locate the signs
at a minimum of 0.6*V meters apart (where V is the design speed in km/h) in the case of
interurban roads and minimum 20m apart for urban roads.
5. At the curved alignment of a roadway, the Chevron signs shall be used to inform the
drivers about sharpness of curve. Depending upon the sharpness of the curve, Single
Chevron, Double Chevron sign and Triple Chevron Sign can be installed.
6. Iron post of signs shall be firmly fixed to the ground by means of properly designed
foundation with M15 grade PCC, 45 cm x 45 cm x 60 cm, 60 cm below ground level.
7. Extra emphasis required for providing Material & Size of Signs, location of Signs as well as
proper shape, size & font of letter as per IRC : 67- 2022 ( Copy enclosed).
