1.0 PURPOSE & INTRODUCTION
This method of statement provides a detailed procedure adopted by ABCI Infrastructres Private Limited for the
construction of Cement Treated Sub Base. CTSB is traditional method applied in road base materials to improve
its engineering properties due to hardening of cement when moisture is present and extends the period of curing
times. Bound base materials provide additional strength and support without increasing the total thickness of the
pavement layers. Depending on project needs, CTSB increases the construction speed, enhances the structural
capacity of the pavement, or in some cases reduce the overall time project. In addition, a stiffer base reduces
deflection due to heavy traffic loads, thereby extending pavement life.
2.0 SCOPE
The scope of plan covers laying and compacting well-graded material of Cement Treated Sub Base on prepared
GSB layer. The material shall be laid in one or more layers as lower sub-base and upper sub-base as necessary
according to lines, grades and cross section as per required specification and as per approval of engineer in-
charge.
3.0 DEFINITIONS
The following abbreviations shall have the meaning as set forth below:-
MORT&H : Ministry of Road Transport & Highways
IRC : Indian Road Congress
IS : Indian Standards
UCS : Unconfined Compressive Strength

5.0 RESPONSIBILITIES
The responsibilities and authorities of Project key personnel shall be assigned as per the project requirements.
METHODOLOGY
Personnel to be deployed
Section In charge will be responsible for the execution as well as quality control of the section for construction of
Road. He will be assisted by field engineers. Further, field engineer will be assisted by surveyors and supervisors
whereas quality control engineer will be assisted by lab technician.
Equipment to be deployed:
The construction machinery used for the execution of the work is as follows:
• Pug Mill

Material Requirement for Cement Treated Sub Base
Physical Requirement
The material used in Cement Treated Sub Base shall be natural sand, crushed sand, crushed stone, or combination.
There of depending upon the grading requirement, or any other material approved by the Engineer. Such materials
shall be free from logs, stumps, roots, rubbish or any other organic or other deleterious constituents and confirm
to grading given in Table 400-1.
General Requirement
The material to be used in the Cement Treated Sub Base satisfies the requirement of CBR / UCS and other
physical requirements when compacted and finished.
Construction operations
Preparation of Sub-Base
Before lying of Cement Treated Base, the Sub Base already finished to clause 403 as applicable. We must check
the calibration of equipment too. Maintain and shaping the area to proper crown and grade.
Spreading of material
Cement Treated Sub Base (CTSB) material shall be spread in layers of uniform thickness not exceeding 150mm
in loose condition as to give compacted thickness of 200 mm. We will use Mixed-In-Place Method for lying of
CTSB in site. Following steps to be follow during lying:-
• Spreading Sub-base material as per required thickness and grading.
• Spreading required quantity of cement over laid sub-base material manually or mechanically.
• Applying of adequate quantity of water and mixing well all cement quantity with sub-base material by
using of Rotavator equipment.
• Finishing and grading of mixed laid layer by using of mechanical Grader. It will be distributed on an
accurately graded, well compacted sub-base in an even layer.
• Compaction will be start immediately after CTSB material has been mixed and spread properly with the
help of vibratory roller.
• After compaction finishing of compacted surface will be checked again for smooth surface.
• Curing will be done as per standard and specification.
Compacted thickness over the entire width of CTSB will be finished by a motor grader machine of adequate
capacity. It’s blade having hydraulic controls suitable for initial adjustment and for maintaining the required slope
and grade during the operation and grading of surface. Other means as approved by the engineer.
Moisture content of the loose material shall be checked in accordance with IS: 2720 (part 2) at the site of
placement prior to commencement of the compaction, if found to be agreed limit the same shall be made good.
Where water is required to be added in such constructions, water shall be sprinkled from a water tanker
capable of applying water uniformly. After adding water, the CTSB material shall be mixed thoroughly by
grader / blender until uniform moisture content is obtained throughout the depth of the layer. At the time of
compaction, moisture content should not be more than 2 percent of the optimum moisture content
corresponding to IS: 2720 (part 8). If the material delivered at the road-bed is too wet, it shall be dried by
aeration and exposure to the sun till the moisture content is acceptable for compaction.
Compaction
Rolling shall start immediately after spreading, with the help of vibratory roller of 8 to 10 ton static weight.
Rolling shall commence at the lower edge and proceed towards the upper edge longitudinal for portions
having unidirectional cross fall and super elevation and shall commence at the edges and progress towards the
center for portions having cross fall on both sides. Each pass of roller shall uniformly overlap not less than one
third of track made in the preceding pass. The grade and cross fall shall be checked and any high spots or
depressions, which become apparent corrected by removing or adding fresh material. The speed of roller shall
not exceed 5km / hr. Rolling shall be continued till the density achieved is at least 98% of the maximum dry
density. The compacted layer shall be tested for 98% compaction. If required compaction is achieved
work shall be commenced on next layer after getting approval of Authority Engineer Representatives.
7.0 TESTING AND ACCEPTANCE PROCEDURES:
All the Inspection and Test requirements shall be followed as per Technical Specifications and other
Codes/Standards.
Any Non-Conformity observed during Field Inspection and also during Testing of Materials the same Non-
Conformity shall be recorded in the specified Format and necessary Corrective/Preventive actions shall be
initiated to prevent such things in future.
Attrerberg Limit As per IS 2720 (Part-5)
Moisture Content Prior to Compaction As per IS 2720
(Part-2) Density test As per IS 2720 (Part-28)
UCS test as per IS 4332 (Part-5)
Acceptance Criteria:
Control shall be exercised on each layer by taking at least one measurement of density for each five hundred
square meter of compacted area or closer as required to yield the minimum number of test results for
evaluating a day’s work and statistical basis.
