Hard Shoulder Construction Process

This document provides a method statement for laying and compacting aggregate base course (ABC) on a prepared subgrade, priming it with MC 30, and applying an asphalt wearing surface. It outlines 7 steps for laying the ABC and priming it, including setting out, excavation, placing and compacting the ABC, applying the prime coat, and laying the wearing course. Resources required include aggregate base course material, prime coat, equipment like rollers and graders, and personnel such as engineers, supervisors, operators and laborers. 1. General

This work shall consist of supplying, laying and compacting approved Aggregate Base
Course (ABC) on prepared sub grade, priming with MC 30 and finally covered with
Asphaltic wearing course. The wearing surface of the hard shoulder will be done with the
laying operation of the wearing course.

5. Sequence of ABC Laying and Priming with MC 30

Step 1 –Setting out

The edge of the designed Hard shoulder at every 20m intervals (lesser interval at the
curves) shall be marked by fixing timber pegs. The edge to be cut shall be
demarcated by fixing timber pegs and stretching a string line between pegs. The
depth to be excavated shall be marked (Normally 150mm from the Binder course
finish level) on pegs.

Step 2– Excavation and preparation of Sub grade

The trench excavation shall be carried out to the lines and levels marked on pegs
manually or by machinery like backhoe. Excavated soil shall be removed from the site
to disposal yards using backhoe loader and tippers or farm tractors. The exposed
surface shall be trimmed and leveled manually and compact using rollers. The field
density test shall be carried out on prepared sub grade before filling the ABC and sub
grade shall be suitably moistened as required. The exposed surface shall be
compacted to density not less than 93% of maximum dry density (MMD) of the
material at moisture content within 2% of the permitted OMC as determined by BS-
1377 test 13 (Modified Proctor) at the rate of one test for every 100m2.
Excavation of material below sub grade level in cut areas that is judged as unsuitable
for the stability of the road pavement, Such unsuitable material shall be excavated and
disposed of to the spoil tips and Voids shall be backfilled with approved material in a
manner that confirms with Embankment construction or as instructed by the Engineer.

Step 3 – Placing ABC up to Existing Road Pavement end level and initial compaction

The approved aggregate base course material shall be laid upon the compacted sub
grade section trimmed and leveled using motor grader up to existing road pavement
Edge level. Initial compaction shall be done by 1 Ton roller.

Step 4 – Placing ABC up to binder top level and final compaction

After placing the binder course the existing base course would be scarified using
motor grader, the approved aggregate base course material shall be laid upon the
initial compacted ABC section trimmed and leveled using motor grader and compact
using 8 ton roller. The compacted section shall be checked to the lines and levels
shown in the Design cross section drawings. The aggregate base course shall be
compacted to a density not less than 98% of maximum dry density (MDD) of the
material as determined by BS -1377 test 13(modified proctor).the field density test
shall be carried out in every 500m2 sections. Two flagmen shall be designed to either
side to control the traffic.

Step 5 - Applying prime coat

Compacted ABC shall be well brushed to remove the dust and loose particles with
ekle broom. The brushed surface shall be sufficiently wetted prior to the application
of prime coat. The Prime coat (MC 30) shall be applied by means of a Bitumen
distributor keeping the temperature within the limit of 40 – 50 C 0. Normally the prime
coat shall be applied at a rate of 1Ltr/m2. The rate of priming shall be checked by tray
test in one test per day. The primed area shall be completely closed with barricading
for the period of minimum 24 hours. After 24 hours prime coat shall be checked
visually weather it completely penetrated in to the ABC. If it is penetrated well the
road shall be opened to the traffic

Step 6 – Asphalt concrete wearing course.

Asphalt concrete wearing course would be done along with the construction of
wearing course on existing pavement.

and tests shall be notified to QC Inspector. QC Inspector shall inspect site works as
schedule and report the Check List to Quality Assurance Engineer (QAE).
The Inspection and Test Plan for relevant working area shall be available on site for
the Resident Engineer to see. Upon completion of the Inspection and Test Plan, the
ITP shall be maintained at the MAGA- CDIG Project Office and submit to the RE
with the progress claim.
