INSTRUCTIONS TO STUDENTS;
Attempt all the questions in this paper

ITEM 1
a) Alex feeds the expression below in his calculator that solves equations.

But before the answer could be displayed, the calculator 8 blacked out. Alex
got stuck. Guide Alex through the procedure and obtain the value of x that will
be displayed on the calculator’s screen.
the calculator recovered but some parts of the screen were showing partial digits.

b) He used the same calculator and feed in the surd expression and the
result was given in the form in which 𝑎 and 𝑏 were partial digits and not clear
, what are the exact values of 𝑎 and 𝑏?
ITEM 2
In a certain ball games organisation body normally admits students from various school to
participate in the tournament every year . Schools with students with average mass below 60.5 are
denied the chance to participate in most prestigious tournament and students who weigh 62kg are
not allowed to participate. A certain school has decided to take 40 students with the following mass
in the tournament this year.

(a) Construct a cumulative frequency table using the interval 50 – 54


(b) Find the mean mass and explain whether the school will participate in the tournament and give
a reason to support your answer
(c) Using a graph draw a histogram and use it to find the modal mass

ITEM 3
A number of communities are often threatened by malaria (M), cholera (C)
and typhoid (T). A survey was conducted by health workers in these
communities and they found out that 50 respondents were warried about
malaria, 40 were warried about typhoid and 50 were warried about Cholera. 10
were warried about All the diseases, 15 were warried about malaria and
cholera, 20 were warried about cholera and typhoid and 15 were warried about
malaria and typhoid.
Task:
a) Using a Venn diagram, determine the number of respondents who were
warried about:
(i) Malaria only
(ii) Cholera only
(iii) Typhoid only
b) Find the total number of respondents in the survey

ITEM 4
At the beginning of term two, Kumasi secondary school's administration faced a pressing issue: -
a shortage of dormitory space for students. To address this sleeping accommodation deficit, the
school's management developed a plan to construct new hostels with a rectangular design, where
the length is √3 times the width, resulting in a perimeter of (14+6√3) units. To fund this project,
the administration required a 97% collection rate of school fees from students

the subsequent week, an additional 100 students paid their fees, resulting in a significant increase
in the proportion of students who had paid their fees, reaching three-quarters of the total student
population.
TASK
a) Guide the school management to ascertain the land area, ensuring a surd form
solution with rationalized numerals and simplified radicals.
b) Ascertain the precise number of students in the school.
c) Guide the school administration on whether the construction can be undertaken,
with supporting reasons.
