Section A

ITEM 1

At the school canteen, the most common food additive used is common salt that students normally use on cassava, eggs and
avocado. Students use it in daily life including the food served at the kitchen every day. Most of the students in the school
have insufficient knowledge on the nature of this salt and its importance in in their life.

Kisjo has appointed you as a knowledgeable person and requesting to guide a new student.

TASK

As a chemistry student:

a) Explain the category of the chemical compound. (03 scores)

The response for category should reflect the; Category(C), Reason(R), and Example(E). i.e. C.R.E. each letter
earns you a score.

 Category; Ionic compound

 Reason; because it (involves transfer an electron from a metallic atom to a non-metallic atom/highly
soluble in water) and the compound adopts a giant ionic structure.
 Example; sodium chloride Crystals.

b) State the suitability of the chemical compound. (02 scores)

Hint; suitability means (property and reason) or (material and reason) each underlined area is scoring a mark.
So one response well stated earns you 2 scores.

 The compound is highly soluble in water hence improving on the taste of food or cassava and eggs.
 The compound conducts electricity in solution form because the ions are free and mobile.

21
c) Guide him on how the compound is beneficial to them in the school. (02 scores)

Guidance should reflect the compound/substance/material/element and its suitability.

 The compound is highly soluble in water therefore it is used to enhance/improve on the food taste.

d) Identify any effect of the compound on the environment. (02 scores)

 When the compound pours on the soil, it causes soil salinity hence polluting the soil, this can be mitigated
by proper handling of salt.
 When the pours in the water, it causes water pollution and this can be mitigated by covering the salt in
its container after use.

Item 2

The school director maybe planning to improve on the amount of furniture for the staff without affecting the
environment. He wants to bring quality staff furniture of different materials and quality but lacks enough knowledge on
the quality of the materials to use.

Task:

As a chemistry learner:

a) Explain

i. Category of the material. (03 scores)

Category; both synthetic and natural
Reason; synthetic/artificial material because it is made by man for example metals. Natural because
they exist naturally for example wood/timber.

ii. Suitability of the material. (04 scores)

Any two well explained responses, clearly indicating material and reason/Importance/use.
Or any four correct responses.
 Wood is strong, hence can last longer.
 Nails are strong with sharp edges to properly bind or join two or more timber.
 Metallic stands which are strong and long lasting.

b) Advise on the choice of the material. (02 scores) Response

should have a material and its suitability.

 I advise to choose timber for making tables because it is strong making it last for long.

22
 I advise to choose metals for making the chair stands metals are strong, long lasting and cannot be easily
corroded.

Section B

ITEM 1
Recently, there has been a rapid down pour of rain in Bombo and the areas around Bombo. This has made cooking very
difficult to people who use fire wood and lack enough shelters for the fire wood.
This has sometimes resulted into having late meals like breakfast tea at some schools like
SMANS.
The school catering staff is suggesting to convert the firewood logs into alternative source of fuel like charcoal but they
are worried of how the process will occur and the minimal environmental effects.

TASK
Use the knowledge of chemistry to write a message you would present to the school
catering staff. (11 scores)

A presentation on steps taken to transform firewood logs into a wood charcoal which is a more sustainable fuel and
convenient to use during rainy season.

Raw material(s). (02 scores)

 Fire wood logs

Process of making/production of charcoal and relevant materials. (05 scores)

 A wide depression of a short depth is dug using a hoe.

 Firewood logs are then piled the depression to form a big hip of the logs above the ground.
 The firewood logs are then covered with a mixture of dry and raw grass followed by soil, a small space is left for
setting fire.
 Fire is set using a match box and the entire covered.
 Sticks are used to create small holes on the hip of logs covered to allow air circulation.
 The set up is monitored for until it observed ready for like 2 – 3 days.

Side effects of the process of production. (02 scores)

Response should clearly reflect the; Danger, Effect, and Mitigation (DEM)

 Production of harmful fumes like carbon dioxide(D), which causes air pollution(E), this can be mitigated by setting
strict laws against charcoal burning(M)

23
Accept any other response clearly reflect DEM, each of the elements in DEM scores a mark, totaling to
3scores, but in most cases, we follow only EM earning 2 scores.
A learner can give as many responses he/she can manage.

Social benefits. (02 scores)

The response should reflect the social benefit (sb) and how it benefits (hb)

 It is a source of employment opportunities where people earn money to improve on their standards of living.

Accept any response that reflects sb and hb and award 02 scores for a response that reflects sb(01 score) and
